OK so I'm not usually too big on posting hypothetical trades, but deals involving Caron Butler seem to be the exception to that rule. Plus, with a rumor being floated recently about a Caron for Camby swap, I thought this was somewhat relevant. this is not an original trade idea, I read it on another message board somewhere...
If the Wizards were seriously considering trading Caron Butler to the Clippers for the expiring deal of Marcus Camby, we can assume that the move would be a salary dump rather than a basketball move. If that is the case, why not keep Marcus Camby and make an offer of Craig Smith, Ricky Davis and Rasual Butler?
For the Clippers, Butler replaces Butler, which is a huge upgrade any way you slice it. Craig Smith has been a nice player, but you essentially replace him with Blake griffin when he returns. And although I hate to admit it, losing Ricky Davis is completely insignificant from a basketball standpoint (I can't help but cheer for that guy). Clippers hold on to Marcus Camby and his expiring deal. While I have not been the biggest Marcus Camby fan to date, I do acknowledge that he has played well lately, and he is certainly our best option at the 4 until Blake comes back. Plus, with Caron's added scoring in the starting lineup I think we could afford to start Marcus and bring Blake off the bench.
Baron, EJ, Caron Butler, Camby/griffin, and Kaman...That's a nice lineup, and the Clippers are getting a lot better on both ends of the court. Baron, EJ and Butler would be very formidable on defense. Caron is not quite the 3 pt shooter Rasual is, but he is a far superior scorer, defender, rebounder, and passer. Caron is a play-maker, and no slouch from the 3 pt line either, shooting 34% in 05-06 and 36% in 07-08. He also gets to the free throw line about 5 times a game. He hasn't played particularly well so far this year, but I believe playing with a pass first point guard like Baron would do wonders for his game.
The core bench becomes Bassy, Thornton, Griffin/Camby (most likely Griffin), and DJ (BTW...It would be real nice if we still had Kareem Rush to play some minutes at the 2 off the bench...that was a tough break for us).
The other point of discussion this trade scenario brings up is that of cap space for next season. My take is this... Heading into next season we would already be very good, and we ain't gettin Lebron or Wade anyway. Also, we have a real chance of being seriously competitive THIS year, which is kind of a big deal for me.
If we are correctly assuming that Washington would do this deal, I think its a no-brainer. In fact, now that I think about I cant believe I had to write an argument that Caron is an upgrade over Rasual...and hes only signed for 1 more season!...Lose the Lebron/Wade fantasy and realize that we have a realistic shot to do something this year.
