Dunleavy Poll: Should He Be Fired Now?
I guess I post one of these every season just to see what Clipper Nation thinks.
If you've been under a rock, here's my brief summary of how things seem to be shaping up around here.
No one thinks Mike Dunleavy is doing well as head coach. So the difference in opinion mainly seems to be between...
A. Fans who don't like the job Dunleavy is doing, BUT think he should stay because
1. Dunleavy hasn't had Blake Griffin all year and if he did the Clips W-L record would be better thus making it ok to have him as coach.
2. Fans are afraid of Sterling's/Management's next choice for coach if Dunleavy was fired. In Clipperworld it seems like things can always get worse so the possible instability at GM and Head Coach positions seem too daunting to mess with during the season while hopes for the playoff are still flickering with life.
B. Fans who are fed up and want Dunleavy gone now because
1. They see teams like Portland, Houston, and Sacramento (you could probably throw in Memphis too) seemingly playing better against higher seeded opponents with what seems to be far less talent. Houston has been without Yao and McGrady, Portland has been without Oden, Pryzbilla, Outlaw, Fernandez; Sacramento without their leading scorers in Kevin Martin and Francisco Garcia...
So they see teams with "far less" (it's subjective, I know) talent winning against teams the Clippers have been blown out by. To make matters worse the Clippers have lost to the Pacers' bench, to the Knicks after being up by 20+, and a Portland team with no bigs.
2. They are tired of Dunleavy's tenure and his play calling, substitutions, offensive schemes, etc. and feel that he has "lost" the team. Some might even argue the players play worse when he is coaching just to spite him.
So what do you think?

Wait till the end of the year.
Though I think it should have been done at the end of last year.
Fire him now while the season is still salvageable
It’s his voice, his energy. He just deflates his players over time. Dunleavy knows X’s and O’s and how to manage a team, but he is also a de-motivator.

Another possibilty for Dunleavy
Make him GM/Assistant coach. A bit awkward, but that’s where his talents can be best utilized without negatively impacting the team – only if his ego will allow.

I faced reality
Unless the team goes on a double digit slide DTS isn’t going to act. We’ve had ample opportunities the past 3 years to do so but nothing has been done. So I guess we can accept it for what it is, a cheap owner who isn’t willing to fire a coach with a guaranteed contract. I’m curious as to what happens this off-season as having a lame duck GM/Coach is a recipe for disaster and also how that affects us regarding free agency with so much uncertainty in the front office.
FA in 2010.
You might get your wish
Have you seen the January Schedule? Looks like a double-digit slide in the making.

January schedule isnt a cake walk but it isn't too bad
These are the games we should have a decent chance of winning.
Miami, Memphis, New Orleans, New Jersey, Chicago, Washington, New Jersey again, Minnesota. If we win 6 of those 8 and pull off an upset elsewhere we go 7-7 for the rest of the month. I doubt we will lose all of these.

Well, looks like we got that upset out the way that you spoke of ; )

Dumleavy Get Outta Here...............
Everything starts out New, Gets Old and Dies or is Destroyed.
Moki, in Part A, you missed one of the biggest assertions of the pro-MD movement!
MD has probably the most sway over DTS than any other coach or GM in Clipper history, and happens to hold both positions. If Clipper Nation has any chance of landing a top free agent this off season (which is now just a few months away), would you rather put your money on MD given his track record of moving DTS to spend money (Kaman contract renewal, Brand RFA offer match, Maggette RFA offer match, Mobley FA signing, Baron’s FA signing), or would you put your money on a new GM and coach who would not likely have the same level of influence over DTS? Even the legendary Larry Brown didn’t have the ear of DTS, and he was the first coach of the modern Clipper era to take the Clips to the playoffs.
Be careful what you wish for, Clipper Nation – a return to the good old Bobby Weiss, Bill Fitch, Chris Ford, and Jim Todd days……….. LOL
Very good point...
I don’t like Dunleavy either, but you make a very good argument for keeping him for at least 1 more season.
