Fox Pulls Sports Channels off DISH: Suggestions?

So as if being a Clipper fan isn't hard enough already, the basketball gods have deemed that I should watch even less LAC games.

Fox has pulled FSW/Prime Ticket from DISH.

Had Charter. Was more expensive and the picture quality seemed less sharp (All HD providers use different encoding and bandwidth so HD from different sources can vary greatly in quality.) I did like the Moxi DVR but at that time could not program over the net or from my iPhone.

Had AT&T U-Verse. Didn't like how I could NOT record TWO HD shows simultaneously AND was more expensive. Also thought my Internet ran slower while it was recording something in HD. Can't prove it but it just felt like sharing Internet and HD on one line - something has to suffer, right? Plus it was more expensive.

Parents had DirectTV. They paid way more than DISH for less channels PLUS they had to sign a long term contract. I thought DISH's guide and DVR were also way better.

So what do I do? Any other DISH Clip fans out there? What are you doing?

Please leave any suggestions or deals or endorsements below. Thanks!

Dish is pretty sweet except when your neighbors have the same remote codes as you

I’ve had some funny remote war battles with some random neighbor where both of us are switching channels to what we want to watch…

Currently have U-verse…it’s ok, there are some great cash rebate deals when you sign up, but I do miss not having NBA TV. The dvr has been a little wonky too…

by banandy on Oct 5, 2010 3:25 PM PDT reply actions

I have U-verse

hows your internet? Mine is really slow and I’m not getting the speeds they advertised. Oh yeah and no NBA TV!

it's so-so...xbox live is fine

but I have one of the lower speed options…don’t remember which though

I have U-verse, too!!

For the most part, I love U-verse. I have two VOIP phones, fast internet & the works TV package. Customer service has been good. I have been with Time Warner & Cox cable in the past & have hated both.

by sttrumpet on Oct 6, 2010 7:22 AM PDT up reply actions

When did this happen?

I have Dish Network because my wife is a handicapper and it’s the only system with both TVG and HRTV (horseracing channels). When I moved up to Santa Barbara county last year I didn’t realize until I got here that I’d be able to get LA prime ticket up here.
From my experience DN pretty much sucks… HD quality is so-so, the DVR is much less intuitive than Tivo and the customer service is a nightmare. But it had horseracing and the Clips in the basic package, so…
I don’ t know, is NBA game package a good solution?

by John Raffo on Oct 5, 2010 4:20 PM PDT reply actions

@swamigusto NBA Package - IDK...

Who knows if NBA Package will broadcast LA games in LA. Won’t they be blacked out by Fox?? I doubt Fox would let NBA TV carry Fox games on DISH the way they seem to be battling right now. Sounds like it’s almost personal or something. :(

by moKi on Oct 5, 2010 8:16 PM PDT up reply actions

I dont see how that could happen

If NBATV was broadcasting the game you would think regardless of the feed it would be on. The same could be said for games on NBALP. They are part of the NBALP package.

by NBAFAN8 on Oct 5, 2010 8:20 PM PDT up reply actions

LA KINGS fans have been calling dish to confirm if the Center Ice package will black out local games normally carried by fox sports. Dish Network says they will NOT black out the games! I can only assume they will do the same for the basketball package. This hurts me cause I lose out on two teams I love. If you call and complain maybe you can get a discount on the bball package. They’re probably getting a ton of complaints right about now…

by Worlock on Oct 6, 2010 1:03 AM PDT up reply actions

Getting anyone with a brain at DN is an issue.

It took the installers three visits to get the dish, the DVR’s, all working in the right rooms. No one can solve a technical or programming problem on the phone and they constantly over-bill us. I’m thinking about getting a second dish from DirectTV. Or the hell with it and I’ll watch the games on the greymarket channels on the internet.

i live in riverside and i have Directv with HD/DVR and i honestly LOVE IT!

Ive had my share of problems with DIrectv and when i threatened to leave, they always gave me sweet deals on packages. I currently have all the channels & 100 bucks off NFL Sunday Ticket HD. All except ghost channels and playboy. I love it BUT yea they are pretty pricey. I might have gone elsewhere but Directv are the only ones that have the south american channels bc my parents are from peru. :) Good Luck Moki with your decision making. Always a pleasure to see you.

Good to see you are still on here as well.

So all you DirecTV fans out there – if I go that route how much should I expect to pay for a basic package (no movies, animal planet, bravo, etc…) JUST basketball channels… Fox, KTLA, TNT, ESPN, NBATV?

Any ideas on $$ per month? And do you have to sign a long term contract?

by moKi on Oct 5, 2010 8:28 PM PDT up reply actions

@IGWT Thanks!

All the packages get kind of confusing! Wanna hear from a current user the best way to get just what i want for the lowest $$.

by moKi on Oct 7, 2010 1:47 PM PDT up reply actions

so, here's what we are working with

The basic package you want with the options you were asking for is called “Lo Ultima” package. It has tnt, tbs, espn1 & espnews (no ESPN 2 or ESPNU), Will carry fox sports west and prime ticket as well. It will cost you $60. If you want HD, it will be an additional $10. DVR is will another $7. As for contracts, i think you will need to sign a 2 year contract but i forgot to ask. Im under a new 2 year contract bc i upgraded to the HD/DVR receiver. but previously i was month to month. Im currently paying $115 plus NFL SUNDAY TICKET. You could probably bargain with them. I always do andyou could probably end up getting hooked up with a sweet deal. One more thing, he reminded me theyhave that deal where if someone gets new service and they use my account number, we both get $100 big ones!!!! :) Let me know how the search goes. Whether you go with directv or not, you can always ask questions and i’ll be gladly to help.

Although, they don’t actually give you $100 cash, they just apply it to your bill, over 6 months (or so).

@IGWT Hmmm....

I def have to think about it. I’d say yes right away except for the long term contract…If DISH gets Fox back sometime in the future I’d like to go back and not have to pay some outrageous early termination fee. I’ll do some research and if I do go with them I’ll let you know and maybe we can both get some cash back/credit!

by moKi on Oct 7, 2010 6:48 PM PDT up reply actions

YAY! HOORAY! I'll find out about that contract. I've honestly never been a contract guy myself. I dread them b/c things are always changing and i dont like to be held down by a piece of paper or else pay a termination fee for ducking out early.

It’s not my thing but i couldnt say no to a free upgrade for the DVR/HD combo and normally it’s 200 bucks. I only payed $21 for taxes. Keep me posted Moki. Best of luck! :-D

Fios is a great option

the internet is very fast and the DVR is pretty good, they also have a very affordable sports package that gives you: FSN HD, Prime Ticket HD, NBA TV HD (and non HD) NFL Network HD, ESPN 2 HD, and a bunch of other HD sports channels. Also most of their other HD channels come in one cheap HD package.

by bestclipfan on Oct 5, 2010 4:46 PM PDT reply actions

Too bad

I was going to suggest FiOS also… I love it. When I was on Charter, with internet AND Vonage VOIP phone service on the same connection, the connection was completely bogged down and everything suffered – TV, Phone and internet. And that was without any HD. But FiOS has been great so far. Where are you? Here in the LBC we can get FiOS, but not UVerse. But the Fiber Optic should be good from them too, I would think.

we were on Charter before moving to Lakewood where there was no Charter so we switched to Fios. I have been very pleased with Fios and I would definitely recommend it, although if you can’t get it then I guess it is moot.

by bestclipfan on Oct 5, 2010 11:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Steve Perrin in the LBC!!!

Yeah Verizon seems pretty well known for quality whether FiOs or mobile but alas I’m in ATT land and I did try their fiber internet + TV and it was fine. But I hated the DVR (so slow changing channels and programming, only one HD stream) and it was more expensive (albeit with lots of channels that I don’t really care about) and it SEEMED to slow down my internet if HD tv was on/being recorded.

I kept the internet but went with DISH for TV.

by moKi on Oct 7, 2010 1:52 PM PDT up reply actions

DirecTV is the best service I have ever had...

It’s super reliable (when I was with Time Warner, there was a lot of outages), good customer service (again, comparing to Time Warner, who has horrible customer service), HD is really good, if not the best (I have seen DISH HD, and it just didn’t seem as good to me.. Not sure about the other options), and DirecTV has exclusive rights to the NFL Package (although I didn’t end up getting it this season, I like to have the option).

It is rather expensive, but it has been worth every penny to me, comparing the service that I had with Time Warner.

I had a completely different experience with DirecTV

Their customer service was awful. I have never been treated with less respect and been shown such lack of concern by a customer service rep than when I was under contract with them. I dreaded dealing with them and left the second FIOS came town. Loved my FIOS.

Unfortunately I now live in Carpinteria and FIOS isn’t available leaving me with either DISH or Cox (I think). I chose DISH. Eff.

I have Dish...

And I really like the DVR. This is one of the keys for me.

I’ve decided to wait it out – Dish has made NBA TV free for the time being, and none of the preseason games are being televised on local TV, so I can wait.

Around the 20th or so, I’ll think about switching again, but for right now, the hassle of switching is keeping me a customer.

by RichardSP on Oct 5, 2010 5:25 PM PDT reply actions

The DVR is terrible, if you've ever used Tivo, anyway...

It loses it’s brains all the time and doesn’t catch up to programming changes like Tivo does and IMO the remote is complex and terrible. If a game goes into overtime, Tivo seems to figure it out but Dish DVR just cuts off the game. My DN hard drive is huge, I’ll give them that.

Did a little scan on the web and found that both Dish and Fox Sports are engaging in some pretty hardline rhetoric about the situation, both blaming the other side and calling each other names. Typically I can’t get anyone on the phone at Dish. No surprise there. Their customer service is almost as bad as Time Warner which is legendarily bad.

by John Raffo on Oct 5, 2010 6:37 PM PDT up reply actions

@swamigusto Which DVR do you have?

I have the dual HD one and they gave me a free Slingbox so I can watch/control it from my computer.

I agree the remote is terrible but I got used to it so not so much a big deal for me anymore. Also at first I hated how slow it is to respond to button pushes but got used to that over time as well and don’t notice it as much either.

The good for me outweighed the bad so I was generally happy with DISH. All the channels I wanted for $51/month, decent DVR that records 2 HD streams at once, I can watch over the internet from anywhere (albeit crappy to unwatchable quality depending on internet speed).

Now this Fox thing has to happen right before B-Ball season. Ridiculous.

by moKi on Oct 5, 2010 8:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Which one? I don't know. We have two.

One is HD, they both run two tv’s. It took weeks to get everything working correctly… and we’re probably moving again soon.
I’m up in the Santa Ynez valley, it might just be the installers up here who can’t figure anything out. The bill is over a hundred a month but we’ve got a pretty big package. It annoys me that we pay another hundred for phone and internet, and a hundred and fifty for cell phones. I gotta get rid of something.
Switching channels on the HD system is dog-slow. The other is fine.
Ironically, the only thing I really care about is the Clipper games and Giants football. The Giants are almost always on regular network tv up here so I didn’t bother with the NFL package. But I live and die with Fox for the Clips since I can’t get any kind of a radio signal… and the Clips radio broadcast isn’t on the internet.
Don’t know what I’m gonna do yet. Wait until the season’s about to start and see if everyone comes to their senses.

by John Raffo on Oct 6, 2010 9:17 AM PDT up reply actions

@swami Yikes! That's a lot of $$

Especially if you don’t watch many of those channels in the big pack you have!

DISH has been really good to me until now. Installer guys were sufficient. The free Slingbox was awesome and $50/month for HD DVR, TNT ESPN NBATV FOX (plus my fav non sports HGTV) – I had no complaints. Really bummed.

You should see about downsizing your plan if you’re not watching all those channels and save some serious dough!

by moKi on Oct 7, 2010 2:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Maybe I lied.

I don’t watch much… but the rest of the household does. The DVR’s are always backed up with movies and kid’s shows and whatever. And my wife stores tons of her racing crap. But she makes a little money at it. I haven’t figured out how to make money off the Clips.

I have Time Warner in my bedroom & Direct tv in Sports room.

Time warner is great for the movies because of the On Demand and for your prime Time
TV shows because you can watch them any time. But i think for the HD sports direct tv
gives me a better quality and there i need to use my DVR if I miss a game. Most time
Prime ticket usually replays the game at midnight and in the afternoon of the next day.

Directv has been horrible for me

My experience with Directv has been horrible. My setup has been unreliable. I get intermittent errors all the time. Trying to deal with their customer service has been a nightmare. Turns out they want to charge me $49 for them to come out to troubleshoot the problem. Even though their installers installed all the equipment, and they made sure I realized that THEY own all the equipment, I am just ‘using’ it. So, let me get this straight. DTV installers installed THEIR equipment, it doesnt work properly, and I have to pay to have them fix it?

I just noticed that the Knicks vs. Wolves game on NBATV is a MSG broadcast and it is being shown on Dish.

With that being said, MSG and MSG+ are both cut from Dishnetwork at this time along with SUN, and all the Fox Sports channels. Does this mean that the Fox broadcasts that are on NBATV and NBALP will not be blocked or cut/dropped from Dish?

This is really confusing :-(

by NBAFAN8 on Oct 6, 2010 12:34 PM PDT reply actions

MSG and MSG Plus do carry some Fox Sports Net programming, but they’re owned by another company (Cablevision). Sun Sports IS owned by Fox, they’re a sister network to Fox Sports Florida. However, they said that as long Dish holds out on the Fox Sports networks, any local games carried on NBA TV or NBA League Pass won’t be blacked out.

Here’s a list of the Fox-owned sports networks that carry NBA teams…
Arizona: Suns
Carolinas: Bobcats (some games also on SportSouth)
Florida/Sun Sports: Heat (Sun only), Magic
Houston: Rockets
Indiana: Pacers
North: Timberwolves
Ohio: Cavaliers
Oklahoma: Thunder
South/SportSouth: Hawks
Southwest: Mavericks, Spurs
Tennessee: Grizzlies (some games also on SportSouth)
West/Prime Ticket: Lakers (West only), Clippers
Wisconsin: Bucks

FSN Utah carries the Jazz, but they’re no longer by Fox (they, FSN Pittsburgh, and FSN Northwest are owned by DirecTV).

by Shawn H on Oct 6, 2010 12:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Thanks, but here is my question.

You stated that any local games carried on NBA TV or NBA League Pass won’t be blacked out.

I live in Illinois and I have NBALP. Does that mean I will or will not be able to watch the Clippers? Basically, if that is the case. I will only be able to watch the Bulls on NBALP? I am soooo confused.

by NBAFAN8 on Oct 6, 2010 2:37 PM PDT up reply actions

oh dude, if you’re not even in CA i wouldn’t worry bout league pass blocking clipper games

by Worlock on Oct 6, 2010 2:39 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, worlock is correct

Since you live out of state, you wouldn’t be affected at all, especially regardless of the Fox Sports-Dish Network standoff. The blackouts on League Pass and NBA TV only come if the local team is already televising its game on the local network. Since you live in Illinois (and I can only assume in the Chicagoland area), Bulls games would be blacked out for you on NBA TV and League Pass; the NBA blackout zone is usually a 35-mile radius of the home arena.

From the League Pass site
http://www.nba.com/nba_tv/blackouts.html

Blackouts take place when a game is televised locally in your area via a regional sports network or an over-the-air station. If a game is blacked out on NBA LEAGUE PASS in your local area, you should tune to your local station to see the game.

Games will also be blacked out when they are appearing on national television. This applies to games being televised on ABC, ESPN, TNT, and NBA TV. You may view these games simply by switching to the designated channel.

by Shawn H on Oct 6, 2010 3:53 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah, I understand all that.

My only concern is b/c of the Fox Sports and Dish Network standoff the games being aired on Fox Sports will not be aired on NBA League Pass. For Example (not the case, but an example)…I can view games with Comcast on NBALP, but not games on FSN on NBALP.

If that is the case, I would not be able to watch any team that broadcasts their games with Fox Sports.

Please help :-)

What would happen if the Dodgers were in the playoffs? Probably nothing… I guess those games are national.
But is this really gonna last into the beginning of the regular season? I’m thinking no.

by John Raffo on Oct 8, 2010 9:31 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't think this will effect NBALP for those outside the viewing area.

I have been keeping track of NHL Center Ice, and all the FSN games have been on Dish. That is except the StL Blues wish are blacked out…I am in that viewing area and the games are on my cable network Fox Sports MidWest.

Is this correct? Am I right in saying that it will not effect NBALP subscribers outside of the Clippers viewing area?
