so jealous...

Why...why...why....Clippers entered the season with so much promise....a motivated Baron Davis, a healthy Kaman and Gordon, and up-and-coming rookie in Griffin, exciting preseason plays from Deandre...this team is looking into getting into the playoffs, even if its just the 7th or 8th seed...

But alas, it ain't gonna happen this season.  Instead it looks like the BOBCATS AND DEFINITELY THE THUNDER have a shot of making the playoffs, and it wasn't that long ago when these two teams are considered one of the worst teams in the league and no one really cares about them...

what the heck happened?!?!?!  Yah yah, there are injuries, blah blah....but every team has injuries.  BD let us down...he's supposed to be the superstar that will be our go-to-guy for this season.  Alas, he's not the answer....

lol Clipper curse perhaps?

If you were to ask me, the Clips lost their will to win when Elton Brand walked out the door. He was a workhorse, and brought intensity every game not just when Boston and the Lakers are in town.

The clippers should really be getting fired up for games that they should win, rather than only raise their level for the league’s elite

I think it was more

when Cassell left.

He brought the winning mentality and he didn’t take it away, but there hasn’t been a Clipper to match that winning mentality yet.

For one thing

the Bobcats are in the east and making the playoffs in the east is not really saying much. If the Bobcats were in the west they wouldn’t even be close to the playoffs. And the Thunder are just really good, Durant is getting close to his full potential and is playing amazing. And an injury to your probable starting PF is not Blah Blah, that would be like expecting the Thunder to win without Durant.

Are you really comparing Griffin to Kevin Durant? Really?!

The Clippers had plenty of talent on this squad. Just the starting 4 of Camby, Kaman, BD & EJ with Sool coming off the bench should have made this team a 6-8 seed contender.

The fact of the matter is the Bobcats and Thunder are playing with HEART and as a COHESIVE UNIT. That’s why they’re winning and that’s why they’re contending for playoff spots.

Unfortunately, our “stars” and “leaders” are pouty, disinterested and in the end completely heartless and devoid of what it takes to truly contend.

Now that the talking heads on this board have stymied their rejoicing at the firing of coach MDsr., maybe they can start realizing that the true blame for another failure of a season resides with our players.

are you still blaming Dunleavy?

Do you really think a personnel like BD, Gordon, Kaman, Rasual, Thornton, Camby, etc is not good enough to make to the playoffs and therefore its Dunleavy’s fault for bringing those players in? Cmon….Themanthemyththelegend (damn, pick a short alias this time!) has a great point. This is not Dunleavy’s fault..its still the players that need to bring in their A game and their heart to the floor. Besides, who the heck is Scott Brooks and yet he’s leading the Thunder to a great record. And I’m not buying into this “they’re playing in the East” excuse. They’ve beaten quality teams thanks to Durant and their cohesiveness. I just wish the Clippers played with the same passion.

My man, alot of things must coalesce to create

a winning team, a winning organization. Players, management, coaching.

Yea

that’s a pretty darn good reason. Although looking at a map OKC is pretty much smack dab in the middle of the continental US.

First of all...

I think you’re confusing the Thunder and Bobcats. The Cats are in the East and I agree they would not be contenders in the West…heck I doubt the Celtics would be higher then 5th seed here in the West. And Durant is about 3X better then Blake will ever be…

As for Dunleavy, I am very happy he is gone because an HC’s job, above all else, is to motivate players and put them in the right position and mental mindset to win. It seemed like Dunleavy deflated their confidence (definately with AT) and certainly was not inspirational. Poppovich, Phil Jackson, Pat Riley all brought their own styles but each of those great coaches were leaders that the team trusted and they really created an atmosphere of excitement that good players thrive in.

Now Im not giving our guys a complete free pass. BD is playing like total crap and the rest of the team drags their feet and seems completely disinterested. This offseason each player needs to think long and hard if they want to be here, and if its just about a paycheck then they need to pack their bags. That said, I’d love to see how they fare under an HC that brings some energy and new ideas to the floor. Kim Hughes is Dun 1.1 and thats not gonna cut it.

1.2

Hughes just won his second game. :)

On a better note, I’d like to give more credit to Hughes regardless of how bad our team looks. He came into as headcoach two of the more dominant teams (a red hot streaking Utah and San Antonio) and kept the game very close against Utah. Later on Dunleavy traded away some pieces (Thornton, Camby, Telfair). Hughes isn’t completley working with a full roster yet, but I think Hughes need to be given a bit more credit. Sure turnovers have been ugly, but I rather see Kim Hughes face walking around than that wrinkly one that’s always frowning.

How did Bobcats and Thunder turn it around?

1) Bobcats are in the east.

2) The star draft pick for OKC has actually played.

by Michael White on Feb 22, 2010 7:53 AM PST reply actions

Also

going into the season, a healthy Kaman wasn’t something we were looking at at that time.

Most were still in the trade Kaman mode.

Him being healthy seemed like an assumption at the time because he was out for so long. And even though he was healthy there was no promise of him being the All-Star he became. Overall Kaman was a pleasant surprise this season.

Yes BD is not yet Boom Dizzle, but he is a MAJOR improvement from last year. and it is crystal clear he is trying harder to be the leader. (Don’t believe me? go to some games and u can see it, the PT cameras don’t always catch it)

Gordon has actually been somewhat of a disappointment if you think about it….Mainly in the beginning with the free throws. We lost A LOT of games missing A LOT of free throws, and Gordon was a big part of those misses. Granted, he’s playing a lot better now.

DJ did have an exciting preseason, but it’s only preseason. MC and Smith playing over DJ was preferred.

Overall, as long as the Clippers showed to be more of a team and did better than last season…then its a good year. (And as long as we didn’t take on any salary)

by KidJustin on Feb 22, 2010 8:30 AM PST reply actions

Where is this "Boom Dizzle" I keep hearing people talk about?

I don’t understand how even the most ardent Baron fanatics can still preach about his “leadership” and this team. I keep putting this number out because it’s the most telling but people keep avoiding it…..

41-96 since Baron Davis became the “leader” of this team nearly 2 season ago.

Leadership doesn’t put up 3-16 shooting nights twice as often as it makes game winning shots.

Leadership doesn’t pout when things don’t go it’s way and have to sit out numerous games with “injuries” as often as it’s leading it’s team when PT doesn’t show it.

The guy’s not a winner. He’s not a leader.

And does anyone else find it interesting that BD followers are still harping about that GSW run in the playoffs as Baron’s “proof”, yet Cap’n Jack was on that team too and now has the lowly Charlotte Bobcats on the verge of a playoff appearance while we’re just hoping to win 30 games this season? Who was the leader on that team again?

Interesting.

by Themanthemyththelegend on Feb 22, 2010 12:55 PM PST reply actions

Boom Dizzle has not yet arrived

I’ll give you that.

But in comparison to last year…Baron is assuming the leadership role.
Also this season, he has sat out the past few games due to a back injury (which can be argued to ur point) but hey the season is lost anyways…either way we got to demo Steve Blake while Baron heals (or just rests…)

…also I said he’s trying to be the leader (because frankly, we need him to be)….he may not be a (good/great) leader but he is stepping up into that role. a role that has been void since Cassell won a championship.

for the record I was not a BD fan until he was on the Clippers, nor was I on the GSW bandwagon (i only cheered because I don’t like Dallas)….anyways BD was not the leader of that team…Don Nelson was (is).

I agree that Baron has to prove to be a winner, but as a leader he’s trying
….and unless his contract will be unloaded soon, we have to keep giving him the benefit of the doubt that he will become the leader we need.

…If not, there’s always Blake Griffin, I see leadership in him.

by KidJustin on Feb 22, 2010 1:11 PM PST up reply actions

I'd rather see him a follower than

that of a leader. The kind of leadership he has exhibited for the past two years and still showing does not warrant him to become the true leader of this team? I agree with how themanandthelegend described BD’s kind of leadership-inferior!

by nelsan on Feb 23, 2010 11:43 AM PST up reply actions

Is anyone really defending him?

I’m not sure that’s the case. I’m a pretty big Baron fan, but even I have to admit that he’s been very disappointing in LA.

Fans aren’t really defending him, they just understand that his contract is going to be very hard to move. So given the expectation that he’ll be here for at least two more years, I think we’re hoping that he can maximize his virtues and minimize his problems. There’s no question that Baron has loads of talent and can be a difference maker. And there’s no question that Baron has improved this year from last year.

You make a good point about Jax. I’ve maintained that Baron needs a guy who can be a co-captain and help lead the team. He needs someone he trusts to carry the scoring load at times and actually life him up when he’s down. Baron’s not a #1 superstar. I don’t think anyone thinks he is at this point. But he can be a devastatingly good player if the right parts are around him.

by madglove on Feb 22, 2010 4:10 PM PST up reply actions

I defend him

when people say things like Steve Blake is a better point guard and that Baron is the worst PG in the entire NBA. Stuff like that…..

by Michael White on Feb 22, 2010 4:20 PM PST up reply actions

Yea me too

I was trying to approach this from an “excluding idiotic comments” perspective.

I do like a lot of what Steve Blake brings to the team though. It’d be fantastic to have a Blake back-up Baron next season. Though not at a high price tag.

I wonder what it would take to keep Blake.

by madglove on Feb 22, 2010 4:31 PM PST up reply actions

Steve Blake -

His salary this year is $4 Mil. I imagine he’ll be able to get something in the range of 3 years for 15 or 16 Mil?? Not sure that we can afford that, but it will depend on how the cards fall this Summer. If we can attract an LBJ or Wade, I think all bets are off for Blake returning, unless he wants to take the Vet’s minimum for a chance at a ring. Crazier things have happened.

At least I'm also a Redskins fan... oh wait. My sports life sucks.

Boom Dizzled Out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This guy is a fraud and he is definitely not a leader. I rather take a hard working Steve blake
anyday day over this overpaid fool. We need swagger in this joint and we haven’t had that
since one Sam Cassell. Thats the fact, Jack.

Still trade kaman

He should never ever be an all star.He proved that in the all star game. He’s an underperformer he should be the man every night but he’s not.Mr flippy is what he is,and yes the players are to blame but so is the system. The guys on thunder and bobcats have been in a system that they know and they like they respect there head coach. And they want to be winners the clips dont have that

by clip shot on Feb 22, 2010 6:58 PM PST reply actions

***sigh***

You guys are blaming the wrong people here….its Dunleavy’s fault…its BD’s fault….trade Kaman…..cmon, last I check basketball is still a TEAM game. They’re not playing as a team for some reason, and I think what’s missing is an on-court leader. BD is capable of doing that but he hasn’t done it…and if he’s not doing it, someone should step in, but unfortunately no one is doing so.

by clipFanInSD on Feb 22, 2010 7:32 PM PST reply actions

straight up

poor coaching, no leadership, and finally injuries….other than that?
i would be really scared to play this clipper team when healthy and under
a coached under a better system.

+1

We need a real players coach…I think Mark Jackson, if he had a veteran coaching staff (John Lucas + a couple more career coaches) he could be successful and light a fire under this group of scrubs. We know Blake will bring it (if he still can) but the rest of these fools need some accountability. Our last healthy professional was Camby and we tossed him out with the bathwater.

Say hello to another top 10 lottery pick that we waste…
