Kim Hughes will be named interim coach. Dunleavy expected to retain GM duties.

Throwing this up for immediate reaction. I am sure Steve will be around in no time with all the gory dissection.

Note from Steve - Thanks to Seth for getting this on the front page. I'm working on a post right now.

fire hughes

doesn’t ring as nice as fire dunleavy

by bacek on Feb 4, 2010 3:28 PM PST reply actions

Just noticed

Dun might stay on as GM…

Ugh…terrible. They should have just cleaned house.

by madglove on Feb 4, 2010 3:29 PM PST reply actions

DTS can't bear to pay millions for nothing

at least this way he saves money by not having to pay for a GM.

FA in 2010.

by ClipperChuck on Feb 4, 2010 3:34 PM PST up reply actions

Yea

I think it’s only a matter of time before Dun leaves though. Clearly this is a nice way of forcing him out.

Same thing happened to him in Milwaukee. He had both roles, got removed as coach, then left completely for Portland.

by madglove on Feb 4, 2010 3:39 PM PST up reply actions

In this economy?

Hard to see him getting a head coaching job again anytime soon. He might have no choice but to focus on being a GM for a year to try to repair his reputation.

he's been banned from the blog...

apparently because everything wrong with the Clippers is Dumbleavy’s fault…and every one of his post is about how Dumbleavy is an idiot. He’s the unkempt, wide-eyed guy you see on the street that mumbles the same thing day after day. I think SP got tired of reading his posts after every game…about how Dumbleavy subsitution sucks, his gameplan sucks, his clothes sucks…etc.

I remember being quite happy in that thread when SP declared that Dun wouldn’t get fired.

Way to go SP!

KA

reports that Dun is only staying “in a management capacity”. Not necessarily as GM.

by madglove on Feb 4, 2010 3:32 PM PST reply actions

I posted earlier how I had totally given up on this franchise and wouldn't

attend any more games, and then this happened. Well, it’s a bit late but better than never. And please don’t keep him on as GM.

by eastie Rich on Feb 4, 2010 3:32 PM PST reply actions

Let's Hope

Dun is gone for good in every aspect. I don’t care where he goes. Just not anywhere near the Clippers.

by Sim on Feb 4, 2010 3:35 PM PST reply actions

I'm gonna call it right now

Bring in Jeff Van Gundy.

Most respected coach available right now.

Look what Larry Brown has done with the Bobcats. We need a coach who is well respected by the players.

by madglove on Feb 4, 2010 3:35 PM PST reply actions

Unless we can get Pat Riley to come run this team.

No idea why he’d leave Miami, Wade and tons of cap space…but whatever.

by madglove on Feb 4, 2010 3:36 PM PST up reply actions

I second that!

I believe Van Gundy was available when we hired Duleavy. Those Van Gundy’s know how to coach.

However, Sterling is not hiring anyone new this season, and if Kim Hughes does well, he’ll get signed up for cheap.

by RichardSP on Feb 4, 2010 3:45 PM PST up reply actions

Is he?

He pretty much let TMac do whatever he wanted in Houston. Of course Baron is nowhere close to the player McGrady was in his prime but still. One thing is for sure, we’d be a really good defensive team with JVG in charge.

To Mike Dunleavy

you brought us the magical year of 05/06 and ill always remember you for that, but maybe its for the best.

by big0lbad on Feb 4, 2010 3:37 PM PST reply actions

ok. hold on

How can some say rid Dunleavy as gm. You don’t get too much better than him as gm. Only a handful. The man is a B grade gm. So I’m glad to hear that he is gm. And sooooooooo glad he is gone as coach. I’m still for Mario Elie as head coach for the next year.

by Takebb909 on Feb 4, 2010 3:39 PM PST via mobile reply actions

Uh he's a C grade GM

He’s had just as many, if not more, mistakes as successes. Name his best move. Drafting EJ at 7 was a pretty obvious move. Thornton was a good pick but most had hm going around there.

He hasn’t had any genius moves. He’s had a couple colossal failures (Livingston and Korolev).

He’s a C. Not horrible, not great.

by madglove on Feb 4, 2010 3:43 PM PST up reply actions

EJ at 7 wasn't that obvious

people here were so pissed when he didnt take Bayless.

by Newton Pham on Feb 4, 2010 3:50 PM PST up reply actions

i can’t really blame him for livingston. koroelev is really my only main gripe with his GMing. i mean this guy got camby, butler etc for free… and deandre jordan i still think was a good pick.

thornton wasnt a no brainer, you could easily screw up that pick. i think he’s definitely better than average a GM. he’s not jerry west or darryl morey, but c’mon give tghe guy a break.

by hans007 on Feb 4, 2010 3:53 PM PST up reply actions

livingston was a colossal failure?

Before or after the injury? You can’t blame him for a mangled knee.

He’s the best thing we’ve ever had at GM and he got the old man to spend some money. Korolev was a laugh I agree but he didn’t make bad picks overall like in years past and he got solid vets for nothing (camby and butler).

I have mixed emotions about the firing…on one hand a shakeup was prolly necessary but unless the team has someone in mind/lined up that is a drastic improvement (proven winner, not this “lol anyone is better” stuff), then its just changing for changesake. The key is getting someone in here who can recruit for next year’s free agent bonanza.

I don’t mind him as GM just yet. Z-Bo wasn’t going to work out for the team (glad he’s doing well in Memphis, though), and he has brought in guys like Camby, Butler, and Rhino for next to nothing.

I’m interested in seeing who gets chosen next as coach, as that interim status on Kim Hughes is looming pretty large. Cassell would be awesome as a sentimental pick, but there are so many people out there, too. Lawrence Frank, Byron Scott, Jeff Van Gundy, Mark Jackson, the list goes on and on…

The Dead Coach Bounce.

Lawrence Frank rattled of 13 in a row for New Jersey and when Karl came to Denver, they surged like 19-2.

Here’s hoping we keep magic bullet lineup, and Hughes does better than expected. I wonder why not John Lucas? Anyway, I’m glad MDSr. is out as coach, but he made a us a REAL franchise (not necessariliy a winning one), and I will always be thankful for that. IMHO, Dunleavy is an above average GM, and the only man in history to pry Sterling’s wallet from his death grip. Hope he stays on in the FO.

same here. he won a little. he got sterling to spend. he got sterling to build a practice facility. i dont think he’s the greatest coach, but honestly he has done a lot more for this team than really anyone else who has been coach or GM really ever.

Totally agree with this. Dunleavy is always someone who I will appreciate, because of what he did to transform this franchise's ways from the past.

I didn’t appreciate his coaching style and I am very glad that we have an opportunity to bring in a coach that can be more productive. I’ll give Dunleavy his props where he deserves them, but criticisms where he deserves those as well.

Makes you wonder if he and the players are clashing, and it has just become too much for him to handle the team.

This should be interesting. Hopefully, the players come out and play with pride on saturday night vs. the Spurs.

GM

I, for one, hope he stays on as GM. Before he arrived, the Clippers did nothing that resembled a professional basketball team. No free agents, no extensions, no nothing. For all his faults, he has changed the perception of the team. We might still suck, but at least now we’re trying. He deserves great credit for that. On top of that, his moves as GM have been above average. We have a decent, young core, and some salary flexibility. We’re in much better shape than many other teams from a roster flexibility standpoint. Question: if he’s still GM, won’t he pick the next coach? That could be interesting.

I would happily part with any bench players and Butler, but want to keeo our big 4 together + Griffin to come in

This was a shocker.

I’ve been waiting so long for this day, but now that it has happened, I dont know what to say.

or hinrich n t.thomas 4 camby n ricky davis

by clips03bg on Feb 4, 2010 4:34 PM PST up reply actions

chicago wants cap.space for dwane wade….they want to get rid of hinrichs contract…plus …they dnt have need for tyrus since taj…took over his spot…so doing this trade saves da bulls bout 4mill

by clips03bg on Feb 4, 2010 4:37 PM PST up reply actions

The Bulls want to move Salmons too

Right now they can get back Ray Allen for Salmons and Hinrich. If they do that they have the cap room for 2 max players (Wade and Bosh). A team of Wade, Rose, Noah, Bosh and Deng would be pretty damn impressive.

FA in 2010.

I wouldn't mind gambling on Deng if they'd trade him

I know HUGE contract but he’s young and is improving every season.

by dulciusEXasperis on Feb 4, 2010 4:37 PM PST up reply actions

id say iggy is better than deng or buler 4 us……he has high bball iq good passer …good ball handler…..something butler n deng lack of

by clips03bg on Feb 4, 2010 4:39 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah but I just worry about Iggy's size as a SF.

Though looking at his stats he’s a career 5.8 rebounder and is averaging 6.9 this season. That’s pretty impressive. He’s the same age as AT, but he’s clearly light years ahead of Al as an established player.

So…sure, why not. Certainly gives us a deadly back court. How’s his defense and can he handle bigger players?

by dulciusEXasperis on Feb 4, 2010 4:53 PM PST up reply actions

iggy is around 6’6 6’7 average for a sf……hes an ok defender better than thornton

by clips03bg on Feb 4, 2010 4:56 PM PST up reply actions

He's a very good defender

and he makes clutch baskets. I actually would love the move if we could give up say AT, Telfair, Sool and Ricky Davis and our 1st round pick for Iggy. We dump 2 contracts (AT and Bassy) and our late lottery pick for Iggy. We’d then have the cap space to resign Camby and we would then have the MLE to use for some depth.

2010-2011 Team
SG – EJ
PG – Baron
C – Kaman
PF – Griffin
SF – Iguodala
Bench – Camby, Rhino, DJ, MLE, Bi Annual Exception

Looks like a solid crew to me.

dnt think they would do dat…..id say they would want something like camby n thornton 4 iggy…….wich im up 4

by clips03bg on Feb 4, 2010 5:08 PM PST up reply actions

Why would they want Camby

They are looking to save money, not add legit players. They may want Camby if they want to trade him again to someone else for another pick.

by ClipperChuck on Feb 4, 2010 5:26 PM PST up reply actions

Why would they want AT and Telfair?

Your trade looks like a regular grad bag, from Philly’s point of view. Don’t you suppose that they suppose that they can do better?

Would you do the same trade if they insisted on our Minni pick?

Where did you hear this?

by Natedog1977 on Feb 4, 2010 4:35 PM PST up reply actions

The start of the Kim Hughes era

why o why am I not excited? Oh yeah, because Kim Hughes has worked under Dunleavy for far too long. Man I wish we can have a rennovation on our coaching staff. Except Jon Lucas. He’s a joy off the bench.

by JackduhSun on Feb 4, 2010 5:00 PM PST reply actions

the "kim hughes era"

Is gonna last a couple of months at best so I wouldn’t really worry about it. Lucas is a glorified cheerleader…if he looked good in tight shorts and with his midriff showing, I’d suggest a spot for him on the clippers spirit.

Hey folks

I heard from Clipper Steve. He’s a bit under the weather and unable to fully enjoy this momentous day in Clippers history with you. He sends his regards.

Finally...

The timing is a little weird, but I’m not complaining. It’s better than waiting until the end of the season. I’m just happy that there will finally be a “new” face/voice on the sidelines. I just hope Kim Hughes hasn’t picked up too many of Dunleavy’s habits/style. We’ve only seen him coach 2 times (I think?) and it didn’t seem as if he had, but now we’ll have plenty of time to evaluate him. Anyway, today is a good day in ClipperLand.

John R is sulking…

I do agree that mid-season coaching changes mean your season is done…no interim coach has ever taken a team to the playoffs???

Plenty of coaches have

but those teams were probably going to make the playoffs anyways, they were just not doing as well as they are suppose to. I remember the Grizzlies changed coaches, the Mavs (Avery Johnson) plus a few others. That said we have little to no chance of making the playoffs. We’d have to go about .700 the rest of the way to even have a chance (23-10 would get us to 44-38).

Disagree in this case - this gives them a chance

Old news

another article already stated he didn’t steal, he made a bad real estate deal. Then the market crashed and the money was loss. The case will probably get dropped.
