Gordon one of 27 named to Team USA

Three weeks ago the Team USA basketball team roster was announced. Eric Gordon was one of 27 players named to the team. A total of six players named to the roster came out of the 2008 draft: Derrick Rose, Russell Westbrook, OJ Mayo, Kevin Love, Brook Lopez, and Gordon.

Others named to the team include:

LaMarcus Aldridge F/C

Carmelo Anthony F

Chauncey Billups G

Carlos Boozer F

Chris Bosh F

Kobe Bryant G

Kevin Durant G

Rudy Gay F

Danny Granger F

Dwight Howard F/C

Andre Iguodala F

LeBron James F

Al Jefferson C

David Lee F/C

Lamar Odom F

Chris Paul G

Kendrick Perkins C

Ama’re Stoudemire C

Dwayne Wade G

Gerald Wallace F

Deron Williams G

By no means is this roster made up of the 27 best players in the NBA. Some players opted out of consideration. Those selected for the pool were named for different reasons and roles. But, it’s obvious that the selection committee has a high regard for EJ.

Is Gordon an up-and-coming star in the NBA? Or, is he a player who’s too small to guard and too inconsistent with the 3? Has he regressed this season from last? If so, why was he named to Team USA?

Sophomore slump

I’d attribute most of his “slump” to the fact that Baron is playing in much more games this season, taking the ball out of his hands more frequently. If someone has time, it’d be nice to see a comparison of EJ’s stats this year as compared to his stats last year whenever Baron played. If they are pretty similar, then it might be that Baron’s the problem, not some sort of “sophomore slump”.

In response to your post, though, EJ’s a player who would be able to handle the international game much better than others. The USA teams as of late tend to edge more towards fundamental players, rather than flashy ones. Since EJ has athleticism, quickness, a jump shot that works best when he’s given good looks (which will be delivered by CP3 or DWill), and a very selective and efficient basketball IQ, I think he’s exactly what they are looking for.

That’s my opinion, anyhow.

who'd he have to compete against?

An injured Bassy or Mardy?

Not to say BD is terrible but haven’t had a reliable backup since…..forever. Be interested to see what those stats would look like if Blake had been here from the start.

you guys remember that game last year when EJ went off for 41 vs the Thunder

Ricky buckets was doing most of the dishing. It seems like most of the games EJ gets going on offense is when Baron is hurt.

Remember, last season when the Clippers only won 19 games

Honestly, who cares about Eric Gordon getting his stats? The team is better this year than last year, because Baron and Kaman are better than last year. I don’t think longingly of the games last year when different Clippers would explode for huge offensive games (Mike Taylor for example) yet the team was horrible.

you're right, we are a better team this year with Baron and Kaman healthy

but they are aging and I think EJ should be the focus of the future. Baron is an excellent player, but I dont know if he is a team player. Its always Baron and Kaman vs when he is on the court

I am sure it is an honor for EJ to be named to the list

He deserves it. He is one of the up and coming stars in this league. As fas as a sophemore slump, you guys are crazy!

Btw, how many big quarters has EJ had this seaosn for this team?

Not many second year shooting guards put up numbers like EJ. His 13 points vs. the Jazz tonight won that game. How about his 18 point 3rd quarter vs. the Blazers in Jan, or his 14 point 4th quarter vs. the KIngs just last weekend. When EJ scores BIG in a quarter the Clippers WIN!

we gained Gordon to team USA

…But we lost Griffin off of it

I really believe they see Gordon as a Ray Allen replacement.

Yeah shooters are often

the most successful at the international level. Hopefully EJ does well and makes the team, I think it will really help his confidence.

Gordon "the Jewel"

Gordon plays team defense and team offense. The other teams are starting to double team him on offense. They don’t want the ball in is hands.Gordon did not take a shot in the third quarter until there was 5 minutes left.
Nash does not like Gordon defending against him,
Gordon despises Davis.Every game Gordon plays well and starts scoring, Gordon never gets the ball.He doen’t’ even touch the ball.Gordon also uses great energy to play defense on the the other teams best player and look at the statistics.
Gordon will average 30 points a game if Blake was the point guard and when Kaman is doubled teamed he passes the ball.

um

“Every game Gordon plays well and starts scoring, Gordon never gets the ball. He doen’t’ even touch the ball”

-How does he score if he doesnt get the ball?

“Gordon despises Davis.”

-Poor Baron Davis. I’m sure I’ve heard it coming out of Gordon in an interview. (sarcasm)

“Gordon also uses great energy to play defense on the the other teams best player and look at the statistics.”

-We tend to use this guy on smaller players because he’s only 6’3. So usually, assuming the SG is a little taller than 6’4, Davis is the one who has to switch to guarding the sg.

“Gordon will average 30 points a game if Blake was the point guard and when Kaman is doubled teamed he passes the ball.”

-Gordon will probably not average 30 points a game. He has the capabilities, but he needs to demand the ball. Blake will probably not be a starting pg for a good while. He falls back alot when it comes to scoring (which can and cannot be a good thing.) Kaman passing out of double teams? Not often, so, no.
