The way Dunleavy was fired reduced the Clipper's chances of getting a quality coach

Money talks and they'll be no shortage of people willing to take the job. But classy, intelligent coaches will take note of  the fact that Dunleavy wasn't told of his firing before the public was.

They'll also take note of the dismissal statement the Clips made regarding Dunleavy's firing, which was essentially a kick in Dunleavy's behind on his way out the door. A coach considering the Clips will wonder if that's how he'll be dealt with when his time is up. Well run organizations no how to end relationships with class and dignity.

To a lesser degree, but even free agent players who think beyond just dollars and cents will take note of the way the Clips handle relationships.

Good point

Getting rid of Dunleavy wasn’t a bad decision. It was the manner in which they did it. Bush league.

For all those who complained about “incompetent management”, was this not the epitome of it?

These are the people left running the team. Nice.

Do not worry. (Matthew 6:27)

What would you have wanted them to do?

Make out with him at a press conference?

Ok, so you thought it was well handled, then?

They didn’t have enough class to tell him in person before issuing a press release at halftime of an away game. Bizarre.

I’m sure that looks great to future coaching prospects.

There are so many things wrong with your post I don't know where to begin

First, all you have is MDSr’s side of the story. He’s not exactly virtuous. Remember when he told us all he was just the coach negotiating with EB? Um, no.

Second, I think future coaching prospects would be interested – $5 m / year, five years, low expectations from clipsnation.com. Yeah, I’d take it.

LOL. You are on a roll today!

Not as good as your make out post above - LOL!!

Seriously though – coaching the Clippers can’t be very stressful.

Your both on a roll.

What a minute, aren’t you two usually adversarial? Anyhow, the timing is curious (at the end of last year would have been better), and it does highlight the manner in which DTS does business. I’m not sure that’s good for the franchise, but any coach that wanted the chance would take the payday.

by eastie Rich on Mar 10, 2010 4:09 PM PST up reply actions

Adversarial? Meh.

I’ve been a more agreeable poster since Zbo is no longer a daily argument for me.

Hence my pleasure in Sr. getting canned. Trade away my favorite player for nothing, and said favorite player goes on to be an allstar, and “star” draft choice never plays, you are dead to me!

by Michael White on Mar 10, 2010 4:25 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, could be my imagination.

I haven’t been following the team as much as I have in the past. I agree about Zbo by the way. I remember he was the only really friendly guy during the autograph session I went to. Big smile, happy, talked, etc… the other players act like they’re having their teeth pulled.

by eastie Rich on Mar 10, 2010 4:31 PM PST up reply actions

Right

DTS and David Falk are virtuous, though.

Anyway, you don’t have to take anyone’s side to see that this was handled in typical Clipper fashion. It was a joke. People are scratching their heads.

I don’t get the sense that there are any grown ups in the front office, but we’ll see what they come up with. If they are going to give a new coach 5 years/$5M (doubt it) then you have more info than I do.

I think the respectable coaches may be turned off by how this went down.

Again, I realize that you don’t like Dunleavy, and I am certianly ready to go in a new direction, but it doesn’t mean that he isn’t respected around the league. See Stan Van Gundy’s comments.

He lost a lot of his luster during his Clipper tenure, which may hurt him going forward. Or it may be yet another indication that this franchise is toxic.

Do not worry. (Matthew 6:27)

MDSr lied

I kind of agree with your first point, did he also mentioned that he had thousands of messages when he turned on his cell phone yesterday. I bet one of the messages was from the Clipper management. if you have thousand of messages that means your cell phone was either out of battery or was off.

It kind of reminds me of the Camby trade

The least they could do is get somebody from the Organization to tell them in person, or even a phone call, before it becomes public.

by LancasterGordon4Eva on Mar 10, 2010 1:16 PM PST reply actions

I don't blame the Clippers for what happened with the Camby trade

The deal was not done yet before Pritchard (in addition to leaking it to the press) called Camby personally to discuss it. I could argue that was tampering. As the deal was not done and the two clubs were still negotiating, Pritchard essentially overstepped and contacted an impacted player. If that deal doesn’t go through, Camby is possibly poisoned against the organization, which is more true for Marcus because he takes these things so personally. At that point, Camby is now pissed off, and the Clippers might feel more inclined to force the deal and take less for Camby, even if negotiations got to the point where they wanted to walk away. That’s tampering.

by Michael White on Mar 10, 2010 1:23 PM PST up reply actions

I stand corrected.

that’s a great reply, thanks.

It was poorly handled

MDsr had to call and leave DTS a voice mail as well. Whatever happened to firing someone on a friday afternoon to reduce exposure.

Of course

Anyway, I hope the team moves forward more coherently than it handled this move.

+1

Either way it sends a strong message that change is coming i think. I’d start working harder if i knew my job was on the line and that could happen to me.

by EJay on Mar 10, 2010 1:41 PM PST reply actions

Studies show the opposite

people tend to become less committed and productive when they worry they might lose their jobs. Its a self-fulfilling prophesy in some ways. That said it seems like MDsr had no idea this was coming. I think most of us are surprised because the team had kept him around for so long we just assumed he’d be here until the end of his deal.

Point taken

I guess it depends on the individual.

"Change"

Such a vague word. As we have seen, there can be good change and bad change.

Need more information.

Why Hasn’t anyone ever started a run Sterling outta town campaign? it seems like the root of all our problems is Sterling….

by ClipOrDie on Mar 10, 2010 2:20 PM PST reply actions

He is the problem

And nobody has started that because there is no point. He owns the team, he doesn’t care if he is hated, and he’s not going anywhere.

by Michael White on Mar 10, 2010 3:33 PM PST up reply actions

u really think so?

i mean if everywhere you go you get no love you figure it be discouraging for someone, yeah he’s the owner but you’d think he’s made enough money to be like all this hating isn’t worth the effort anymore and just cash out and jump ship, what u think??

by ClipOrDie on Mar 10, 2010 4:12 PM PST reply actions

People will aways fawn over DTS because of his money.

I guarantee he pretty much has no clue how the fans feel about him. I’ve worked for pretty wealth aholes in my time and let me tell you they don’t have a clue because everyone is kissing their as*. I’ve seen DTS totally ignore fans (even in the front rows) who want to say hello or shake his hand. He pretty much looks at them with disgust and keeps on moving.

He cares about the fans as much as he does a piece of gum on the sole of his shoe. This is a money making business for him, no more.

by eastie Rich on Mar 10, 2010 4:21 PM PST reply actions

DTS is disgusting!!!

DTS is a disgusting person. He does not care about winning, just making $. All his
discrimination lawsuits are disgusting also. He is not a nice person, and an
embarrasement to the NBA. He won’t change. "The only way to change is if he spends
big money on a GM, coach and star free agent. I doubt it!!!

by mrbiff on Mar 10, 2010 9:02 PM PST reply actions

DTS will not last forever

How old is he? i didn’t mean evil, but time is on our side and one way to end his run with the Clippers is when he retires or …..

DTS...

A couple of interesting quotes from this old piece…

Those San Diego years are the stuff of NBA legend. Sterling welcomed himself to town by plastering his face on billboards across the city. And when the Clips won their 1981 home opener, he ran across the court, shirt unbuttoned and glass of wine held aloft, to high-five his players and hug coach Paul Silas. “I love you!” he told them. But later that year he refused to pay a $1,000 prize to a local lawyer who won a free throw contest until the guy sued for fraud. Sterling even asked Silas to cut costs by taping players himself. Before the next season, he installed an ex-model named Patricia Simmons as assistant GM, putting her at Silas’ desk while the coach was on an NBA promotional trip to China.

Silas returned to find his belongings piled in the hallway. And it was in San Diego that Sterling first employed the money-saving tactic of declining to replace injured Clippers; the team nearly forfeited one game when a player’s emergency dental work temporarily left them with just seven able bodies.

Dunleavy’s belongings were probably piled in the hallway, too.. LOL

All the while, Sterling was building a reputation as an invasive but indecisive owner. Classic example: In 1993, Manning, then an unhappy All-Star, asked Sterling why he wasn’t dealt at the trade deadline. Sterling replied that he’d dreamed the Clippers had won a championship after he’d passed the ball to Manning for the winning shot. The following year, though, Manning was dumped for an over-the-hill Dominique Wilkins. “Dealing with Sterling was impossible,” Carl Scheer, the team’s GM from 1984 to 1986, once said. “If he took the elevator down, he’d ask the operator what he thought, and by the time he had reached the lobby, he’d changed his mind.”
