Olympiacos Piareus big man Sofoklis Schortsanitis was the clear star and MVP of the 18th Greek League all-star game after recording 42 points on near-perfect shooting to lead Team Greece to an impressive 147-114 victory over the Rest of the World in Heraklion, Crete. Both the winners and Schortsanitis set records for the most points scored in the history of the event. Schortsanitis bagged 42 points on 16-for-16 two-point shooting, 3-of-5 three-point shooting and 1 of 2 free throws to earn the MVP trophy.

God I love the idea of Sofo

Wowzers

42 points on 21 shots? And he only shot two freebies?? That’s stunning. Glad to hear he’s doing so well. Maybe we’ll get to see him in a Clippers jersey next year. Feels like I’ve been waiting forever. If I’m not mistaken, he’s still only 25 or so…

At least I'm also a Redskins fan... oh wait. My sports life sucks.

Bring him over and get rid of Kaman.

We’ll be more than OK at the center position with him and DJ.

Sure we would – until Bynum drops 40 points on us. I’d love to see Sofo on the team, but neither he nor DJ is ready to be a starting center in the NBA.

How do you know that?

I don’t “know” anything, but that is my strong opinion based on what I’ve seen of DJ. I’m glad we have him, and I hope he keeps improving. I think he should have a significant and expanded role next year, but he hasn’t shown me that he’s ready to take over yet. I think we would miss Kaman on both ends of the court.

I agree with you completely on DJ

I assume though, that Jax was more asking how you know Sofo can’t be a center in the NBA…

by Michael White on Mar 16, 2010 4:20 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes, that's right

I’ve thought that Sofo would have a good chance to be a (short) starting center in the league since I saw him absolutely destroy Elton Brand at the world championships a few years ago. He’s quick, strong, agile and has a good shot. He would probably have a problem with Bynum but who wouldn’t? He’s much quicker (and probably smarter) than Bynum, for what it’s worth.

I wasn’t saying that Sofo couldn’t be a center in the NBA. I just wouldn’t want to trust that he’s ready to be the Clippers’ starting center. Sofo’s careers has had some extreme highs and lows ever since the Clips drafted him. After his performance against Brand, he looked like the next great Euro. A couple years later he looked like he was ready to be a contestant on The Biggest Loser.

I don’t think anyone really knows how Sofo would perform in his first NBA season. For that reason, I wouldn’t count on him for more than frontcourt depth until he actually plays in the NBA. I really do hope the Clippers bring him over next season just as I did last year and the year before that and so on. And in another season, maybe he and DJ will make Kaman expendable, but IMO they haven’t done it yet.

Wouldn't read too much into it

Take a look at Greek Shaq’s stats year… not impressive. (7pts 2 rebs a game). It was also a all-star game… not sure if they follow the theme from the ones here but aren’t those pretty much just pick up type shooting exhibitions? See his stats below and decide if you think him and DJ can really play C. Some of you guys are being so daft.

Interesting

Strange that Sofo made the all-star game playing only 12 minutes per game. That makes me wonder what he weighs these days and what kind of shape he’s in. The legend of MBFGC continues. We’ve been following this guy so long that it would be a shame if he didn’t come over and get one good shot at the NBA.

Yea

it’s not even an aberration… he averaged 4.4 pts 1.8 rebounds last year. So its not as if this was an off year. I wouldn’t mind seeing him over here still (what do we have to lose?) but it appears he hasn’t been very good overseas.

I don't know...

Hasheem Thabeet pulled down 19 and 16 in his first D-League game…

I’m not sayin’, I’m just sayin.

That's debatable.

Either way, he’s not pulling those stats against NBA level talent. The term fool’s gold comes to mind.

I don't expect him to put up numbers like these

but I think he could be a decent backup PF/ or small C. But at the moment we have those positions covered but we will have to see once the dust settles after the off season.

He's fine to bring over

in a limited role. I love how you guys want to win now and yet play 2 projects like Greek Shaq and DJ as our starting centers.
