Thoughts on Outlaw and Blake so far?

Hey Clipper fans! Blazer season ticket holder here just wondering what your impressions are so far of Steve and Travis. I was very sad to see them go and was curious to see how other fans view them

In Portland Travis was always the guy (along with many others, I'm sure you know) who seemed to have a ton of untapped potential, had great hops, hit some key late game shots and was very likable yet spuratic. You either loved or hated him, and at times both. On a scale of 1-10, I would say Portland fans liked Outlaw about a 7. (Kobe being a 1 and Roy being a 10) We wish him the best of luck.

Blake was the steady hand that got blamed for not taking it to the basket as much as we would have liked, but was repspected by teammates and coaches and was a great compliment to Brandon Roy. He spread the floor with his 3 point shooting and had a decent assist/turnover ratio. We were never too excited or upset to see Blake come in and out of games, because we knew he wouldn't do anything to hurt your team, and he provided a mediocre amount of help. On a scale of 1-10 I would venture to guess he would be rated about a 5 in Portland, worth keeping around and not a throw in, but not a deal breaker type of player.

I was just curious to see how you fans feel about having these guys on your team. Im going to attack a poll, just because I have never had the opportunity!  Thanks a lot for reading.

Rather have MCamby, pass on Steve Turnover and Travis ClankLaw

Agreed about Camby

I like Blake

He is who he’s been advertised — a solid backup PG that can run the show at times and hit the spot up 3. He’s unselfish to a fault, but compared to the other PG we have running the show I’ll take that. When he runs the point the game seems to get more ball movement and everyone seems to touch the ball. I don’t have stats to back me up but that’s what I see.

After hitting 3’s very early on it seems as though Outlaw has fallen in love with his jumper. I know there’s a lot of upside to him but of late he doesn’t seem that different from when we had Al Thornton settling on jumpers. It’d be nice to see someone with his athleticism get to the rim a bit more. If I had to choose, moving forward, I’d keep Butler as a backup 3 and bid adieu to Outlaw.

Thank you for the response

Outlaw has a way of making you VERY upset with those jumpers, but when he hits them in late game situations your happy he did lol

True

But even on this roster, when everyone is healthy (minus Griffin, of course) I can’t see Outlaw getting minutes late in the game. If his true position is at the 3 I’d rather have Rasual take those shots — he’s hit big shots all season.

Trout is a 4th qtr maniac

he does not shoot a pretty ball. In fact most of the time if he shoots all nice and squared up he misses. It is the shot where he is practically falling over moving at an awkward angle where you are wondering “what the hell is he thinking?” that goes in consistently.

He can win a lot of games for teams, trust me…but, admittedly, he can be infuriating to watch at times. Plus he has good ball instincts on D. the amount of tipped balls he generates is remarkable at times.

Yea, I'm with yaggiefresh here

I would like to keep Blake as our backup PG. Outlaw strikes me as unnecessarily one-dimensional. The ESPN scouting report on him says has zero court vision. Maybe that’s what I’m seeing.

Outlaw could be a driver.

But he NEVER was, and I don’t think he wants to be. He likes taking two dribbles, and shooting.

My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.

I like both Blake and Outlaw.

It is kind of unfair to judge them on “rental” basis, when our season was some what ended when the trade took place, I did see some up side from them in earlier home games, they just played down to Clippers’ level in recent games, that said, I think they would be two good valuable guys if we acquired them from training camp in October rather than February.

by Pats fan in CA on Mar 16, 2010 12:48 PM PDT reply actions

Good topic

And I like the addition: umm, we’d rather have Camby? How are the Portland fans finding Camby, is another good question.

Blake seems to be more valuable and likeable than Outlaw at this point. SB is a pretty good complement to BDavis. Everybody was pretty geeked up after his first couple of games (with BDavis out), and now he has settled into the basic backup role, and he’s pretty good. it’s not the highest thing on the Clips’ list of priorities, but it’s still an important role, and he could do a good job filling it.

And yeah, it’s hard to say what works when it’s all on the “rental” basis.

Outlaw would look better as a Clipper if he wasn’t so similar to RButler. They’re both different from the Al Thornton type, but they don’t adequately solve the Clippers SF problem. For Outlaw to be good and solidly embraced, he would have to be markedly better than Butler, and that doesn’t seem to be happening, or even close to it. Butler is hitting shots these days and it’s probably not a coincidence: he seems to be consciously outgunning Outlaw.

Well probaly no suprise to you

but we love Camby as expected. I couldn’t put " Rather have Camby back" in the poll because I knew it would be overwhelming. I seen Outlaw as a high risk high reward kinda player if/when he was traded. I knew Blake would show up and do his job. I’m glad you guys can make use of Blake and I hope Outlaw can either get it going for you, or be traded to a team that needs his “skills”.

Heres to hoping Greg and your number one pick Blake comes back healthy and tear up the league. Maybe next year we could meet in the playoffs, that would be a fun series to watch.

Nice post!

Appreciate the interest in us Clipper fans and how we feel about your former players. I really liked the explanation of your scale (Kobe 1 – Roy 10)…it couldn’t have been described any better to a Clippers fan.

I voted to just keep Blake. You have no idea how desperate we Clippers fans have been in wanting a decent back up PG…and finally we have it! In regards to Oulaw its a wash, because he’s basically Al Thornton but with more range and less athleticism.

I see no reason not to want these guys around

Trout seems like a great 6th man and Steve is the anti-Baron.

by big0lbad on Mar 16, 2010 1:45 PM PDT reply actions

Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse

The Clippers prove it can ALWAYS get worse.

We thought Al Thornton was a black hole who took too many shots and didn’t rebound enough (especially for his height and jumping abilities).

So how could Travis Outlaw be any worse, right?

Wrong. He is worse. Especially since it finally seemed to dawn on Al to start improving on rebounding and defense this season and passing it more when he was guarded.

Travis seems to think that having someone in his face is an excellent reason to rise up and shoot over him. Which is ok if he makes it, but mostly you wish he would have passed it to someone with a higher percentage shot.

I don’t know if it’s the Clipper uni or just maybe the pressure of not having a contract next year, but he’s jacking up shots like he’s Kobe “Black Mamba” Bryant – those shots where in the air, you scream NO!!!! but then say DAMN if they fall in.

As much as I absolutely despise Kobe, I can honestly say I’ve never seen anyone come close to being as consistent as him in making so many BAD shots. One on one, one on two, one on three, forget your lame teammates, falling away off one foot, 26 feet out, over a 7 footer and Shane Battier’s hand on your nose shots.

Travis Outlaw is not Kobe Bryant. Stop taking those shots when your team is trailing. Go for it all day when you’re up by 20.

Rant over.

by moKi on Mar 16, 2010 3:06 PM PDT reply actions

agree, to a point

I was at last night’s game and Outlaw did shoot about every time he got the ball, open or not. But what do you expect? He’s playing for a contract, on a team going nowhere, with a caretaker coach, and that has made clear they intend to renounce his rights to make a run at LBJ, Dwayne, or Bosh.

What’s going to get him noticed, and a big contract next year, an assist or 2 per game or scoring a point a minute for the 15-20 minutes of PT he gets in a given game? Its a no brainer and, if I was his agent, I’d tell him he I’d fire him if he didn’t shoot every time he touched the ball!

Good point, moKi

Funny that we all somehow thought Outlaw was different than Thornton – the grass is always greener, I guess. But getting rid of one athlete with a low b-ball IQ who never seems to make the pass he should for another one is a little frustrating. Outlaw’s a better outside shooter – Thornton’s better taking the ball to the rim. But they both have similar/significant holes in their games.

With that being said

I do miss AT’s ability to attack the rim. Especially earlier in his career when he was more Maggette-esque and getting to the line at a higher rate. Hell, it’d be nice to see the Clippers as a whole do that more.

by yaggiefresh on Mar 16, 2010 6:24 PM PDT up reply actions

Amen Steve

Frustrating as a fan. Feels like a step backwards.

But who knows how much of it is auditioning for next year. No matter how many points it gets him, I don’t think it makes for a good video reel to sell yourself to anyone next season. What coach or GM is going to look at those shots and think it shows good decision making? I don’t think the shots he does make atone for all the misses and fast breaks it starts for opponents.

by moKi on Mar 17, 2010 2:32 AM PDT up reply actions

I think Outlaw is expendable but I would like to keep Blake

Blake is everything you want in a back up Pg and he has a nice steady feel when he is on court. Also if we do manage to get LeBron I think Blake might actually be better at playing next to LeBron because he won’t demand the ball leaving more opportunities for the King.

LeBron or Bust !!!!

Poll Schmoll...

I hate the polls. But I like Blake as a counter to Baron. Outlaw’s okay, but jacks up too many jumpers… and doesn’t make enough. As was said, it’s probably understandable but I doubt he’s winning friends in the Clips organization….

by swamigusto on Mar 16, 2010 4:47 PM PDT reply actions

Blake yes Outlaw no!

Blake is a serviceable back up point guard if we ever find a good starting point guard. Outlaw
chucks too many shots and he’s not my kind of player.

Both a decent, but neither really are important to our near or long term future.

Thanks for the responses guys, its just what I was looking for!

You guys are very knowledgeable and passionate fans, I honestly think you deserve a team worth rooting for. Baring any more injures, I think next year you will have the team you have been waiting for. Good luck and help us take down a few teams in the playoff race with us this year, it would be greatly appreciated!

If the Clips are fortunate enough to be able to re-sign Blake and Outlaw they should count their blessings

The Outlaw is coming off a serious injury and adjusting to a new team and still has been quite respectable. The game against the Bucks gave a good glimpse of what Blake can bring to the table.

They are two quality players who can easily be starters or outstanding backups. Neither one has any off court or character problems. Blake is well known for his extensive charity work.

If the Clips are looking for a backup point guard and starting small forward. There probably won’t be many much better options than Blake and Outlaw. The few better options will likely be a lot more expensive.

I hope the poll didn't fight back too hard.

Seriously though, so far I’ve liked Blake more than Outlaw. He brings a nice steadiness to the offense, and as others have stated, he simply does not do anything that will lose games for you. I think every team is (or should be) in the market for a good backup pg, so we’d be lucky to get him back for next year.

the trade

As a Blazer fan, with the two ex Blazers on your team I now also root for the Clippers.

(Also have become a Villanova fan on account of Dante Cunningham, sad to see them drop out of the tournament)

I certainly think the deal was to the benefit of Portland. Blazers had logjams at both positions- I think we are shakier with Jerryd Bayless rather than Blake at backup PG but at some point you have to just bite the bullet and put the ball in the hands of your young inconsistent guys like Bayless and hope that he can get the job done.

Similar at forward, we have a less fun to watch but more steady backup forward in Dante Cunningham so I think Outlaw had to be let go to assure that Cunningham and Webster get some playing time.

I am hoping Blazers do not try to get either back again simply because I think they have to gamble on their young guys coming through rather than having a roster full of insurance policies. (although the deep roster did save their bacon in the 100 year flood of injuries this year)

I really like Camby and obviously he fills a desperately needed role. He looked kind of shaky in his first few games but is improving lately, starting to show his passing ability along with his rebounding and blocking skills. I only wish he wouldn’t shoot jump shots- I saw him make one once and I still thought “I wish he hadn’t shot that” because it seemed like a fluke.

As for whether the deal was positive for Clippers- don’t know if it was a win/win for both teams but it looks like the Clippers may have at least gotten about a breakeven out of the thing. One key benefit for the Blazers was reducing their problem of too much depth, when people say “you can’t be too deep” I think the Blazers performance early in the season before the injuries hit heavily suggest that “you bet you can be too deep, it is a corrosive situation to have players deserving of playing time to be spending 48 minutes on the bench.” (even though the Blazers had a pretty good record during that period, a lot of it was that other teams were really struggling early in the season and the Blazers had the talent that they should have been among the NBA leaders early in the season.)

Camby

Should be interesting, Camby vs Stoudamire tonight.

by lsjogren on Mar 21, 2010 10:10 AM PDT reply actions

Outlaw

Getting Outlaw may have been an inherently risky situation. The guy’s contract runs out this year, he missed most of the season with injury, so it figures that he could be obsessed with trying to generate some stats to bolster his quest for a good new contract.

The smarter thing would be for him to go out of his way to play team ball, since his market value is going to be largely based on his past performance and he would probably earn some kudos showing he can play unselfish ball, even if his stats for the year don’t amount to much.
