Clipper Awards 2009-2010

With all the chatter about League MVPs, DPOY, All NBA, most improved etc I decided to write up a Awards night for the Clippers this year.  I realize the season isn't "over" over but who are we kidding, the season has been over for a month now.  In the spirit of our childhood sports league we're all about giving out team awards even after a crappy season because its not about wins or losses... right???

Star-divide

MVP - Baron Davis... what you say?  Yea this is one of those categories where someone has to win, even when no one was really deserving of the honor.  He's a bit of a enigma but he's also the heart and soul of the team.  While many point out that is the problem with the club it doesn't mitigate the fact he is in fact our most important and thus valuable player.

MIP - Chris Kaman... this was a close one since Baron is much improved himself but Kaman has come back from a injury plagued 2008-2009 season to put up his most consistent (and healthy) season of his career.  He's been bad the past few weeks but he was our best player for much of the season.

Least Improved Player - Eric Gordon... he might have even regressed slightly.  One can only hope the doom and gloom of being a Clipper hasn't damaged this young man's career.  He's been solid this year but has not improved at all this year which is very disappointing as the Clipper Nation had pinned its hope on him this year.

Rookie of the Year - Ouch this hurts, check again next year

Newcomer of the Year - Has to be Rasual Butler.  While he's been hot or cold in intervals this year, he's been a solid deep threat for us, a solid presence in the locker room and also made some big shots this year.  Not bad for a player we got for free.

Defensive Player of the Year - Marcus Camby, we went from a mediocre defensive team with Camby to one of the worst defensive teams in the league without him.  We previously wondered if things could get much worse... well they did once we lost our defensive captain.

International Player of the Year - None, this was a trick question, we don't have a international scouting department.  I guess Greek Shaq wins by default.

Executive of the Year - Apparently Neil Oshley now wins for his cap saving deals at the deadline.

Coach of the Year - John Lucas... its unclear what he actually contributes but at least he cared and he got Baron to play hard when the season still mattered.

I dont agree with you about EJ though. I think his stats havent improved because Kaman is the focal point of the offense, but he has turned into a solid defender. now he needs to take the next step in working on his rebounding skills

by big0lbad on Mar 17, 2010 3:21 PM PDT reply actions

What has he improved?

His free throw shooting and 3pt shooting have been off last years averages. Everything else is the same. I think his defense is about the same as last year. Not to mention he averaged 20 points after the all star break last year. Also not sure if you can attribute Kaman being the reason, we had ZBo last year and he put up similar numbers to Kaman has this year.

zbo was in and out of the lineup when EJ averaged 21 per. we also have Sual taking shots at the wing position that wasnt there last season

i would say EJ hasnt made any significant strides but I wouldnt say he has regressed. hopefully he can use this offseason to improve his handles and free throws.

just my opinion

Shots per game

Sual 2009-10: 10.3
Thornton 2008-09: 14.8

again, I compare arguing my favorite basketball team and its players to arguing politics

you can give the best advice on why i should vote for either party, but my mind is already set. I think its part of being a ‘homer’.

by big0lbad on Mar 17, 2010 4:17 PM PDT up reply actions

That's a strange position to take

So you’re basically admitting that you don’t care for logic or reason and you just reach a conclusion and stick to it in the face of conflicting evidence to the contrary?

Personally, I think a fan can support his/her team w/o being blind to reality.

by madglove on Mar 17, 2010 4:37 PM PDT up reply actions

of course im biased when i argue my favorite team.

I enjoy watching the team play, regardless if they make mistakes, lose, etc.

Anyhow, its just my opinion that I dont think EJ has regressed. Im not trying to sell anyone on anything. ; )

I like it

I’ll play, here are my picks:

MVP: Baron Davis

MIP: Chris Kaman

LIP: Deandre Jordan- PER fell from 14.1 in 08 to 11.8 this year. Gordon’s drop is much more subtle, 14.9 in 08 to 14.5 now (Gordon probably had higher expectations though.)

Newcomer of the Year: Craig Smith- a bit more even than Sual. I wish he was taller and didn’t foul every 15 seconds.

Defensive Player of the Year: Eric Gordon if only for the strech where he shut down Kobe, Wade, and Roy in back to back games. Honorable Mention to Davis who can D up as well as any point guard in the league.

Coach of The Year: Jon Lucas. Why not, its not like Hughes or Dunleavy accomplished anything.

by Michael White on Mar 17, 2010 3:29 PM PDT reply actions

I'd give EJ the award

if he’d grab a fricking rebound once in awhile. He had another game with 0 rebounds on Monday. That’s 3 times in the last 13 games where he played over 30 minutes in each game (100+minutes total) without snaring a single one. You’d think one would bounce to him by accident. Can someone figure out how a guy built like a linebacker can’t get a single rebound in a game? His rebounding rate is about the same as Earl Boykins believe it or not. It’s definitely becoming an issue, he was a awful rebounder in college too.

I think DJ's Per

is bound to drop with more playing time. That should remain a given. Even if he’s not playing more time, he is playing more games. Therefore, least improve player for me is Al Thornton.

Here’s my list, including current team after the deadline and before the deadline.

MVP: Baron Davis
MIP: Chris Kaman
LIP: Al Thornton
Newcome of the year: Drew Gooden (sure he’s only played a few games, but so far he’s be awesome)
Defensive Player Of The Year: Marcus Camby but Eric Gordon could get in the mix
Coach Of The Year: Jon Lucas.

by JackduhSun on Mar 17, 2010 6:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Exactly

Actually think DJ is making strides this year. He just needs as much PT as he can get, so it’s a great opportunity for him right now. Hopefully we’ll reap the benefits next year, but he’s most likely an energy guy off the bench. If he develops into a Chris Anderson clone, we’d take that. What’s that guys PER btw?

by ghost_ride on Mar 18, 2010 12:57 PM PDT up reply actions

How does Lucas get the COTY nod lol

Because he can jump up and down even in a walking boot? If he would of received the head coaching job instead of Hughes I’m guessing you’d give Hughes COTY.

by dulciusEXasperis on Mar 17, 2010 3:42 PM PDT reply actions

Believe me dude, I’m with ya. But somebody has to win. 1 head coach has been fired (I assume that disqualifies him) and the other is 4-15.

Besides, it was obviously a joke.

by Michael White on Mar 17, 2010 3:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Bingo

When someone starts off with the coaching eval with I’m not sure what he does then I think you know I’m not being serious. Actually I change my vote, the guy who coached the girls team at the last game (during halftime) is the coach of the year. They destroyed the boys team even if the score was 0-0 (the boys couldn’t even get a shot off against that suffocating girl defense).

MVP – Marcus Camby – For bringing it every night, and always being a professional.

MIP – Chris Kaman – Kaman improved his scoring numbers, but I’d really like to see his rebounds and blocks back to where they were in the 07-08 season. None of the other players really improved.

Least Improved Player – DeAndre Jordan - I was really hoping that he would break out this season, and hopefully he will be given a chance to do so with a lot of minutes to finish the season. His free throw shooting is looking improved, so that’s a really good thing!

Rookie of the Year – JamesOn Curry - his stats say it all… http://www.nba.com/playerfile/jameson_curry/index.html

Newcomer of the Year – Butler/Smith – It’s a tie for me on these guys. Butler is inconsistent, but has definitely had some big games for us. Smith was more consistent. While his size is an issue, he still finds ways to score with his sleek moves in the paint.

Defensive Player of the Year – Marcus Camby - With him gone, it should be Kaman, but now Kaman’s a prima donna.

International Player of the Year – Mike Taylor! or Big Sofo for his recent big game in the Allstar game.

Executive of the Year – Neil Olshey - We’re finally done with the Dunleavy Era. Glad that we’re moving on, and hopefully things will get a lot better.

Coach of the Year – Tony Brown - The team really seemed to look like they knew what they were doing, the one time that he coached. He’s 1-0 this season, so he has a better record than any of the coaches, so he wins!

"look, you can find any coach you want, bring him in here and run the situation. But I don't think they are going to do as good a job as I do." -Mike Dunleavy Sr.

Great topic

In the spirit of the new generation, it does seem like everybody should get an award of some kind. Curious about what awards Dunleavy, Novak, and Skinner might get, not to mention Thornton and Telfair. Love the Jameson Curry nod.

On Gordon. It seems like there’s a pretty good argument that might be made for him to be the MVP. Kaman and BD have both seemingly played much better, but the Clippers have been a very different team when Gordon is not in the lineup. Would the Clippers have been in such bad shape if Kaman or BD was out? They both deserve a special award for staying healthy as they have, which is always an impressive accomplishment for any playing donning the Clipper uniform. When Kaman was out before the critical Memphis game, DJordan stepped up big time in the first half, but Kaman’s absence was deeply felt over the following couple of games. And when BDavis has been tweaked and subpar, the Clips have been an inferior team, it seems. The question is how do other teams keep going and maintain strong play when they lose guys from the lineup. I don’t know. But I’m not so concerned that Eric Gordon hasn’t met our expectations this year. I think they were too high, and didn’t include some important factors. I would have liked to have seen him have a great season as much as anybody, but I think we have to be reasonable about what to expect.

BD and Kaman deserve a lot of credit. They both worked really hard in the offseason and have the production and stats to show for it. Sadly, neither reached the level where they were able to produce the tough, tipping point wins in the first 40 games that might have made the season viable. They needed to step up and win games when Gordon was out early in the year, for instance. But they have done a good job. As hard as they worked in the offseason last year, they have to work just that hard and even harder this summer. Kind of sad and depressing, but that’s the way it is.

This is a great topic because it provides all sorts of different ways to evaluate what has happened with the Clippers this season. Just scratching the surface here.

Dunleavy get the "Best Dressed Award"

Loved his suits! B. Skinz obviously best goatee award and Novak, hmm, warmest seat on the bench award?

I am glad Baron is getting some love

After all the heat he has gotten from the fans, I’m glad people atleast notice he is the leader of the team and has tried this year.
I also think Chucks right about Gordon. Even if he has not regressed, everybody had high expectations for him, but he has come nowhere near living up to those expectations or the promise that he showed last year.

by MannyA on Mar 18, 2010 12:11 PM PDT via mobile reply actions

People just like Blake's consistency

Obviously anyone who was saying that was frustrated, but it’s for a reason.

Clipper fans are basically at the whim of whatever mood BD’s in on a particular day, and that’s just tough to take for any sports fan.

Agree (mostly) with your award choices

but the Least Improved Player has to go to Steve Novak. He’s played terrible when given the opportunity: His 3pt% went from .416 in 08/09 to .255 in 09/10 – even his F/T% suffered greatly over last season as it went from .913 in 08/09 to .75 in 09/10…I rest my case.

Small sample size

Bit harsh to hold him to those averages when he has only played 270 minutes on the year as opposed to 1,161 last year.

by Michael White on Mar 18, 2010 3:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Yep

Very small sample, the guy’s barely played.

by ghost_ride on Mar 18, 2010 3:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes, the sample size is small

But he has to earn playing time by delivering when he is called upon – which he did not, hence the limited playing time. I like Steve Novak. I’ll never forget that buzzer beater last year against the Nets. But this year you have to admit he’s been very disappointing. I doubt if he gets re-signed by the Clippers.

"Excellence...is not an act, but a habit" Aristotle

by Cliptomaniac on Mar 18, 2010 4:41 PM PDT up reply actions

He won't get re-signed

but the reason is that they never should have signed him to begin with. They obviously had no need for him, they never play him, and it’s been a waste of $1MM.

But I still don’t agree with your take. If you put JamesOn Curry in for a minute and he goes 1/1, is his 1.000% FG% meaningful? Of course not. So obviously there is a threshold for meaningful and too small. Playing a total of 270 minutes in 69 games (an average of about 4 minutes per game) is statistically insignificant, and therefore no conclusions can be made from those statistics.

by Michael White on Mar 18, 2010 4:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Sorry clipper chuck i have to disagree with you!

Mvp no way Baron Davis he should be MIP most inconsistent player
and EJ isn’t the least improved player My friend you might want to look at a lot
of the games where you point guard and other players on this team don’t get
him the ball specially when he’s shooting is on fire. Least improve would have
to be Deandre Jordan. Coaches training staff and management need all to go
in the following year. Bring in only people with winning mentality.

by ENCUEROMAN on Mar 18, 2010 7:58 PM PDT up reply actions

Baron's actually been pretty consistent this year

If you look at his month over month numbers he’s been steady all year. He has the highest PER for the team and he’s only missed 2 games (Kaman has missed 6, EJ 17).

Look for yourself. http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/gamelog?playerId=194

Are we get a good ROI on the $13 million he makes? No. But is he one of our better (if not the best) players? Most definitely.

FA in 2010.

Agreed

I think people are too caught up with the contract size and the name Baron Davis brings to the table that they get caught up and forget that Boom really isn’t half that bad.

by JackduhSun on Mar 19, 2010 12:27 AM PDT up reply actions

Baron Davis MVP??????

How can this even be considered? Yes, he’s played better but a most valuable player has to actually show up regularly and help your team win games, not just show up when he feels like turning it on.

I guess I can see in reality why you might but that is pretty much only because the whole roster has been pretty shit this year (again).

Bingo! Oh me oh my!

by ClippersUK on Mar 19, 2010 4:49 AM PDT reply actions

If you don’t agree with it, at a minimum you could enter your own choice for MVP.

by Michael White on Mar 19, 2010 7:53 AM PDT up reply actions

It kills me to say it, but on a team with so little to

chose from, the MVP goes to Davis. But that’s just my disgruntled opinion, it would be Camby but he’s gone.

by eastie Rich on Mar 19, 2010 9:11 AM PDT up reply actions

No, the minimum is what I put.

If you really want it then I’d say Kaman because when he doesn’t play, we pure suck. We are 0-6 when he’s not suited up and he’s been one of our only consistent threats.

Bingo! Oh me oh my!

Good point...

Looking at individual stats, plus the teams win/loss record, Kaman should get both MIP and MVP!

Can we have no-mvps?

On a team which will likely end up with 30 or fewer wins and has generated no momentum to carry over to next year, I’d argue that no one deserves an MVP award. Let’s vacate the award for 2009-10.

Gordon a league of his own

Gordon is the glue and balance of the Clippers team and they are nothing without him. This year Gordon has missed 16 games to injury and the clippers won 4 and lost 12.
3 half games to injury, Clippers lost 2 and won one.Gordon only 21 last December has been playing hurt he is a warrior since he entered the NBA. The record of the Clippers is 23 -29 with him out of the lineup.
Gordon is the Clippers best defensive player he guards Wade, Bryant , Wallace, Roy the best guard asnd small foward. He doen’t have reounds because he is the guard that is designated to rotate back to defend the basket. The rest of the Clippers do not have his basket ball intelligence and he often throws passes to his players who do not rotate to receive the passes.Gordon has to play with Kaman,Davis ,Butler, outlaw,Smith all shooters and terrible on defense.Gordon shooting percentage is over 55 % in the paint , He takes at least 2 shots a game because the clock is running out.Gordon has not played in the NBA when he was not injured and that includes last year. He expend tremendous energy on defense and to evebn get good touches on offense. The Clippers are a joke without Gordon,He will play out his contract and then play with his friend Rose at Chicago and that will be worth seeing.Ask Bryant ,James,Camby what they think of Gordon,
