Reviewing our trades

So I believe that enough games have now been played to review how we went with our trades - Camby, Thornton, Telfair, R.Davis out and Gooden, Outlaw and Blake in.

I will be the first to admit that I wasn't happy when we traded Camby for a couple more perimeter players, I thougth it left us to thin inside. Obviously the GM had the 2nd deal in place which allowed us to bring in a natural 4 man (Gooden).

Looking now at our roster, I feel it is more balanced, with Gooden providing more offence than Camby, Blake being a major upgarde at back-up PG (capable of starting) and Outlaw a better shooter than Thornton and will continue to get better as he gets more game time in to himself.

I think by adding Griffin to this line-up, it would provide an even better balanced attack. Would be great to be able to resign our recently traded for guys, but the likelyhood as we all know is slim :(

Here's to next year!

Curious to hear your thoughts.

the games have definitely been more fun to watch

If Blake Griffin was a sure fire thing then i would be all about resigning these guys. Unfortunately, we have no clue how good he will be. i think we should definitely try to resign blake, outlaw and butler and sign a couple more solid players with the remaining cap space and MLE. Of course, a lot of it depends on how we finish the season. If they can have a .500 record with the remaining 22 games i would be happy. That would be 36 wins which is a substantial improvement over last year (19 wins i think?). Go club optimism!

by AtotheZ on Mar 2, 2010 4:26 PM PST reply actions

Can't do both

There’s no using cap space and the MLE. The very nature of the MLE is an exception for teams w/o cap space.

I’m guessing that the team didn’t free up all that cap space for nothing. They really want a shot at Lebron and the other FAs. I can’t imagine they’ll change course now.

Personally, I wouldn’t mind at all offering a bunch of 1-year contracts and waiting til 2011 to take a crack at Melo.

by madglove on Mar 2, 2010 4:31 PM PST up reply actions

That could work too

but Melo seems even less likely to come here than Lebron.

FA in 2010.

by ClipperChuck on Mar 2, 2010 5:22 PM PST up reply actions

Ya think?

I’m not so sure. Melo seems like the kind of guy who would want to be in LA. Denver’s always seemed like a strange fit for him. Plus, that team isn’t getting much better. Aside from Melo, each one of their starting 5 is as good as they’re going to be.

Melo used to be considered on the same level as Wade and Lebron. But in the last couple of years his rep has been a little shaky. I can see him desiring a bigger market to feature his talents.

by madglove on Mar 2, 2010 5:40 PM PST up reply actions

He's not nearly as marketable

so I don’t think LA appeals to him. He could just easily easily go to the Wizards who will have a ton of cap room (and he’s a Baltimore kid to the end). Lebron has other outside interests aside from basketball, he wants to build his brand a la his hero Michael Jordan. Melo in LA would probably just get into trouble.

FA in 2010.

by ClipperChuck on Mar 2, 2010 7:13 PM PST up reply actions

That doesn't really follow

He’s not marketable so you don’t think he’d want to be? That doesn’t make sense. Clearly Melo cares about the spotlight and marketing opportunities. He’s already one of Jordan Brand’s primary guys. The reason he isn’t that marketable is because he plays in Denver. That doesn’t mean he wouldn’t want to be marketable.

How can you say Lebron wants to be like Jordan but Melo doesn’t? Melo is on Jordan’s brand. Clearly the two have a relationship that goes beyond the court.

Melo would be a great fit in LA and I could see him wanting to up his visibility to match those of his friends Wade and Lebron. How do you think Melo feels watching Wade and Lebron shoot commercials and get all these endorsement deals? No way he doesn’t want that.

by madglove on Mar 3, 2010 11:40 AM PST up reply actions

I love the idea of Melo with LAC

And I think with Melo, as opposed to James and Wade, would be the most receptive to being in LAC. Wade already has his ring, and Lebron is so good that it doesn’t really matter where he goes. He can carry teams. But can Melo? I am a HUGE Carmelo fan, but he’s not a guy that can just carry a crap roster. He seems to be the guy who would be the most receptive to the Clippers simply by analyzing it from a basketball standpoint. From a basketball standpoint, the Clippers do offer the best supporting cast here.

by Michael White on Mar 3, 2010 11:45 AM PST up reply actions

He's not marketable for reasons beyond being in Denver

Looks, style, his game isn’t high flying. He’s not marketable because he’s not that personable.

FA in 2010.

by ClipperChuck on Mar 3, 2010 8:55 PM PST up reply actions

I think Melo would be a perfect fit.

Reliable offense to smooth over those annoying scoring droughts. I’ve been hoping someone would shed light on Denver’s ridiculous salary cap issues and whether them losing in the playoffs again will begin ’the break up" of the core.

by banandy on Mar 3, 2010 10:49 AM PST up reply actions

Looking at the numbers

it looks like we are going to be between a rock and a hard place regardless. If we get a major FA then we will have an extremely thin bench filled with cheap scrubs and washed out vets. And if we don’t get a major FA we still won’t have enough money to keep the roster we have…somebody we like is going to have to go regardless, which will undoubtedly hurt our chances next year of advancing to the playoffs. And what about injuries? If there are any lengthy injuries next season we are done…again.

by Cliptomaniac on Mar 3, 2010 11:04 AM PST up reply actions

Well

You need to limit major free agents down to 2, Wade and James. Both of those guys are so good that it doesn’t matter how thin the bench is. You deal with it.

If we don’t sign one of those 2, we do have the money to keep the roster we have. The Clippers have a ton of cap space, and if DTS is willing to pony up for reserves like Gooden, Blake and Outlaw the salary cap won’t be a limiter.

by Michael White on Mar 3, 2010 11:31 AM PST up reply actions

There's about 33.6mil committed to salaries for the 2010/2011 season.

If we don’t sign a max player, and we decide to keep Outlaw, S. Blake, Gooden, Smith, and Butler that will take us to about 53.6mil (assuming these players will be paid the same salary as in the 2009/2010 season). That will take us to only 11 players on the payroll and we would be pretty close to the salary cap I believe. So unless I’m missing something (which I may be, since I am no expert on this subject), we will be rather shorthanded if we keep our current reserves – even at there current salaries.

by Cliptomaniac on Mar 3, 2010 2:03 PM PST up reply actions

You can go over the cap if you resign your own players

Part of Bird rights. We’d also have the MLE at that point, to further fill in our roster.

That’s my understanding of the situation.

Doubtful

The Nuggets would have to tank in the playoffs and Melo would have to demand a trade.

Melo needs a solid veteran to keep him in check

He is too immature and wouldn’t know how to handle LA.

Do not worry. (Matthew 6:27)

by mikey p on Mar 3, 2010 4:13 PM PST up reply actions

I don't know

I can’t think of too many worse influences than the Denver Nuggets. Between guys like JR Smith and Kenyon Martin, it’s not like that team has a lot of “solid vets”.

And you can’t really argue that Chauncey is the difference because Melo has been pretty much the same since he got in the league. If the guy can hang out with Allen Iverson and not get in trouble, I think he can handle LA.

by madglove on Mar 3, 2010 4:52 PM PST up reply actions

Oops... I never thought I'd say it, but...

I actually enjoy Drew’s offense more than I miss Camby’s defense. I was pretty mad about the Camby trade, but Drew closes out on shooters better and hedges pretty darn well too.

Plus, having Travis Outlaw (I don’t think I’ll start calling him Trout… that feels weird) and Steve Blake (who seems to make 20 good decisions for every bad one) is just so much more comforting than Al and Bassy were. At this point, aside from getting LeBron, I would give anything to get this squad + a draft pick + 1 more piece for next year. These guys just enjoy the game more than our old crew.

by Erik O on Mar 2, 2010 5:21 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah it is strange that both teams that Camby left (us and Denver)

both got better at rebounding once he left. Not to discount Camby’s amazing play for us. But I wonder if our guys got dependent on Camby getting the rebounds which hurt our team rebounding as a whole.

by bestclipfan on Mar 2, 2010 7:04 PM PST up reply actions

What about data of the team before Camby?

Because I’m thinking (not fact).

If a team is rebounded at an average rate, then they add Camby making them above average rebounders.

If Camby leaves, the team already has grown a rebounding mentality but knows how valuable an asset Camby was on the boards that everyone pushes extra hard to make up for the loss of Camby. That extra push makes the team above-above average rebounders.

Example: Camby gone, Coach Hughes told Kaman that he has to get at least 12? rebounds per night.

by KidJustin on Mar 3, 2010 8:23 AM PST up reply actions

You have a good point there

maybe Camby should retire and become a rebounding coach.

Clippers future training staff should feature

Rebounding 101 by Prof Camby and Shooting 101 and Blanketing 201 by Prof Mobley

If Cassell leaves the Wiz we can also have courses like Scowl 300 or Non-Stop talking 247 or my personal favorite, Interpretive-Balls-Dance 100

Sam could teach Kaman

how to argue with an official without getting a T. I still remember fondly when Sam was yelling and he got a T then he told the ref he was yelling at his team mate and the ref actually got rid of the T. Ah good ol Sam.

Too early to say

Depends on if we keep any of these guys. I thought we could get some prospects for Camby at least which is why I didn’t like the trade. I don’t think the two trades can be tied together, the Cavs could have gone in a ton of different directions that would have left us holding onto Thornton and Telfair.

Why doesn't somebody just ASK Dun about the two trades...

Something like, “Were the two trades connected?” Would that be too invasive? Really? “Hey Dun, when you traded Camby, how sure were you that about the one with AT?” Or shit, “Would you have still made the Camby if you knew the AT was dead?”

It’s a done deal, after all. Sports interview taboos? F that.

You can't ask him that because if he tells the truth then we would get in trouble for tampering

Q: How sure were you about the AT/Telfair trade before the Camby trade?
MDsr: Very positive, I told LeBron that if he wants us to pay him the most we can then he needs to talk to the Cavs about going for Antwan Jamison instead of Amar’e Stoudemire
Q: Why does that matter?
MDsr: Because I have been in talks with Sam Cassell, and he feels lonely in Washington so he’s asking for some Clipper players, he also asked me for Livingston’s phone number by the way. So with all of the connections, I was able dump the contract of AT to Washington, knowing Outlaw would replace AT and Gooden didn’t really care of Washington.

if we are unable to get a max player

i would like to see these players resigned and mix in blake and another lottery pick this would be a really interesting team, but we might be getting ahead of ourselves, there is still plenty of season left so lets see how they finish, my question is who is going to be the coach next year, i like kim hughes no BS attitude but am not sure about him being the long term solution

by ImranQ on Mar 2, 2010 7:52 PM PST reply actions

The Clips would have to close out real strong

in order to Hughes to stay on as Head Coach. It’s hard to evaluate his performance so far as the team has been very erratic.

How about keeping Gooden, Outlaw and Blake, let Rasual go

Let Rasual go, Outlaw can hit the trey better than Rasual, and then can do more than Rasual, I wouldn’t let Outlaw just go and fall in the hands of, say, the Suns or the Jazz, where he could become a scary type of player. Keeping Outlaw is, believe it or not, a priority. I’d keep Gooden, too. I think he’s a guy that, when given a chance, he shows that he belongs in this league, plus he’s good insurance in case Griffin (God forbid) suffers a setback (and it can happen, happened to Amare and to K-Mart). It seems strange to me how he’s bounced around already, been with so many teams, reminds me of Kevin Willis or, most recently, Chauncey Billups. Blake, as much as I’d love to keep him , would be the odd man out, unless he’s wiling to take a large pay cut.

I don't think Blake is the odd man out

But especially, if we get a top tier SF free agent, then (after renouncing our players to make the max contract) we resign Outlaw first before we even think of Butler. We can still have Butler but he will definitely be a pay cut and probably the last one to be re-signed.

And then go after Blake.

Then make a move between Gooden or Smith. Jordan automatically makes one of the two expendable.

Collins is the super odd man out. And to an extent Novak, but I don’t see other teams having an interest in him and I don’t see why he wouldn’t accept another cheap 1-year contract. So he might be resigned late in the offseason.

Resign Gooden-Blake-Outlaw&trade B Davis

Griffin’s health is a concern. Odin and S Livingston never were the same. Gooden and Blake are solid. Outlaw gives you versatility. Baron Davis is a poor shooter-injury prone- and becoming a defensive liability.

by dontex on Mar 3, 2010 6:38 AM PST reply actions

In this trade review

you have to factor “increased Jordan playtime/experience” as an “in”

by KidJustin on Mar 3, 2010 8:19 AM PST reply actions

I think...

…Gooden is gone at the end of the year, unfortunately. He’s the NBA equivalent of a troubadour- stops by a team for a few, tears the house down, and then takes the next train out. Seven teams in as man years, I believe.

Out of all of them, Outlaw needs to be a priority. He has basketball talent oozing from his pores- the kid really has a chance to be something special. He was buried on the bench in Portland, but is proving he can really play. And Blake is the consummate backup point guard, and I feel like we can keep both him and Outlaw without busting up the piggy bank too much.

Wow.

As a Blazer fan, let me just say that I’m really happy for the Clippers fans. You really seem to like Blake and Outlaw. It was hard for many Portland fans to see them go, but at least they are appreciated where they are. I hope you guys get to keep them next year too.
