Should we draft Bledsoe?

Let's suppose for a moment that the Clips don't land James, but they do manage to sign a talented wing. Maybe he'll be Childress, or maybe we'll splurge for Gay. In any case, let's suppose that the starting 3 spot is suddenly taken care of.

Meanwhile, let's also assume that all our unsigned guys end up leaving. Maybe it's because we can't afford them, or because we don't want them, or because they don't want us. Regardless, let's suppose that they all go. We're left then with Baron, EJ, Griffin, Kaman, DJ, and our newly signed wing. We obviously have some more shopping to do, and oh yea, we just drafted a young guy. Alas, we didn't win the lottery, so we had to settle for somewhere around the 8th pick.

Here's the question, then: All else being equal, which position would you prefer that the rookie play?

I've been so fixated on filling our need at the wing, I had not considered the possibility of drafting a point guard until last weekend, when Bledsoe left me impressed. I'm not alone; Chad Ford on ESPN just promoted Bledsoe's draft ranking to 14th, and I've got one of those deep-marrow hunches that it'll be going higher after this coming weekend. The guy looks convincingly good.

On the other hand, KA on Clipperblog has been drumming up Jan Vesely, a Czech sharpshooter (47.6% behind the arc) who can play either the 3 or the 4. Chad Ford has him ranked 11th, and his stock seems to be rising. The combined praise has me dreaming again of super-satisfying our team's most obvious need.

From where I'm standing, it's not going to be possible to develop a particularly well-informed opinion on who's the better talent. I picture our turn in the draft arriving, and we might even be faced with 3 or 4 very good (though none outstanding) choices. If a few of them happen to play different positions, then perhaps this should play a part in our decision making.

Baron has his fans and detractors, and while he'll eventually be slowing down, he could have a few more good years left. Still, as we were trying to do with Livingston and Sam, it might be wise to start developing Baron's replacement sooner than later. On the other hand, Griffin and our newly signed wing will both be "unknown quantities," to some extent. As Baron will suffice for now, maybe we'd do better going with a Plan B at the forward slots.
