The Back Story:

The Big Picture:

The Clippers meet a red hot team for the fifth game in a row when the head to Orlando to face the Magic.  Maybe the Magic will have a let down after beating that other LA team on National TV on Sunday.  The Clippers?  On a Tuesday?  No Mark Jackson courtside?  Ho hum.  The Clippers opened their current five game road trip with a loss in Utah Saturday.  Eric Gordon sat out that game with a sore leg, but after two off days, hopefully he'll be able to play tonight.  The Clippers are pretty thin at shooting guard without EJ.  I really think of Butler as a three (though he did play the two all last season in New Orleans) and Mardy Collins is just limited.  Steve Blake at the one and Baron Davis at the two is probably the best Clipper backcourt if EJ doesn't play, if you ask me.  Against the Jazz, Kim Hughes started Butler in the backcourt and inserted Travis Outlaw into the starting lineup at small forward.  Outlaw responded with miserable performance, shooting 3 for 11.  After shooting well in his first few games as a Clipper, Travis is 12 for 43 in his last five - which is less than 30%.  Obviously the Clippers were hoping for a little better productivity when they traded away Marcus Camby.  Looking at this game, it doesn't look very promising.  I just don't know where the Clippers are going to get their points, while on the other side of the ball it's pretty obvious how Orlando is going to score.  Maybe the Clippers have an advantage with Drew Gooden in the post against Rashard Lewis - but it's more than negated by Lewis' perimeter game on the other end.  Maybe if Eric Gordon is healthy he can get the best of Vince Carter - but then again Carter has been a Clipper killer forever.  Maybe Baron Davis can use his size advantage against Jameer Nelson.  But none of those seem like sure things, which probably means that the Clippers are in trouble in this game.

Star-divide

The Antagonist:

I'm probably missing something, but it doesn't seem like much of a secret what the Magic do.  They have to most dominant center in basketball down low, and they surround him with four shooters pretty much at all times.  As a team, they have attempted 131 more three pointers than any other team in the league.  That's pretty astounding when you consider that Mike D'Antoni is coaching in New York, and Phoenix is still Phoenix.  They have attempted twice as many threes as five NBA teams this season.  They take an astounding 27.5 per game.  And they shoot a pretty good percentage (.363) allowing them to make a league high 10 per game.  The Clippers have only made 10 or more three pointers in seven out of 63 games this season.  Their season high is 12.  The Magic AVERAGE 10 makes and have made 10 or more 34 times this season.  Now, they also play solid defense (anchored again by Howard) and are fourth in the league in defensive efficiency.  But on the other end, it's not complicated.  Post Howard, force a double team, and find any one of four shooters behind the three point arc.

The Subplots:

  • Clips Nation Night at Staples April 10th!  It has nothing to do with the Orlando game, but in case you missed yesterday's post, be sure to buy your discounted tickets for the Warriors game on April 10th and come to Clips Nation Night at Staples Center.  It's going to be great fun, and tickets are selling fast.  You'll need to act quickly if you want to be one of the 50 fans who get to high five the Clipper players as the take the floor before the game.
  • Everybody shoots.  More on the Orlando approach.  There are a few numbers about their roster that I just find fascinating.  Of the twelve players who have appeared in games this season (see below), only Howard, his backup Marcin Gortat, and the relatively little used Brandon Bass (second fewest minutes on the team) are not three points threats.  Since Gortat and Howard essentially never play together, it means that they basically have 4 shooters on the floor at all times.  Taking out the field goal attempts for Howard, Gortat and Bass, the other nine Magic players attempted almost 44% of their field goals from beyond the arc.  Fully five Magic players have attempted more three point field goals than two point field goals.
  • Twelve players.  As I was looking at statistics on the Magic while preparing this preview, I noticed something strange.  When I got to their page on Basketball Reference, it just didn't look right.  It looked like they didn't have enough players.  As it happens, the Magic have only played twelve players total all season.  That's pretty unusual.  Even the Lakers have played 13.  The Clippers have played 19, thought that's inflated by a few trades of course.  Poking around, I couldn't find any other team who had played as few.  All NBA teams are required to carry at least 13 contracts, but Adonal Foyle has yet to play a minute for Orlando this season.  The fact that Howard has played in all 64 games and Gortat has played in 63 has a lot to do with that, I should think.  It's not like the Magic haven't had a few injuries also - Jameer Nelson has been out, Vince Carter missed some games, Rashard Lewis was suspended.  But their luxury tax bill has probably frozen the payroll at 13 players, so when they've had people hurt, they've just made due.  Maybe we'll see Foyle tonight.  You never know.
  • Stretch fours. Rashard Lewis is the prototypical stretch four that always gave Marcus Camby trouble, since he preferred blocking shots to defending the three point arc.  We'll see if Drew Gooden does any better against him.
  • Double reverse mojo.  I figured that by writing extensively about Chris Kaman and his record string of 20wo30s that I'd for sure cause hmi to score 30 right away.  Instead, maybe I've made it so that he's no longer capable of scoring 20.  He's gotten 19 and 12 in the last two games.
  • Kaman.  Speaking of Kaman, you might suspect that he would have struggled against Howard.  He certainly has had trouble with the biggest centers like Shaq and Yao in the past.  But Kaman has been respectable against Howard in their eight career head-to-head meetings.  Kaman has in fact never failed to score in double figures against Howard, though he's never scored 20 against him either.  Kaman has averaged 14 while shooting .527 against Howard.  I'm pleasantly surprised.
  • Former Clippers.  Matt Barnes was a Clipper for 38 games in 03-04.  Jason Williams was a Clipper for about a month in the off-season of 2008.
  • Movie Quote:

Tonight you're all gonna be part of a social experiment. Through the magic of diesel fuel and ammonium nitrate, I'm ready right now to blow you all sky high. Anyone attempts to get off their boat, you all die. Each of you has a remote... to blow up the other boat. At midnight, I blow you all up. If, however, one of you presses the button, I'll let that boat live. So, who's it going to be: Harvey Dent's most wanted scumbag collection, or the sweet and innocent civilians? You choose... oh, and you might want to decide quickly, because the people on the other boat might not be so noble.

The Joker, The Dark Knight (2008). I enjoyed Dark Knight, mostly for the late Heath Ledger's mesmerizing performance.  But I found it a little too clever for it's own good at times.  The above scene is one example.  It's not just the suspension of disbelief that the Joker could arrange all of these complex conundrums - I'm fine with suspension of disbelief.  But the movie just seemed to move from one Joker showdown to the next, with no resolution to the ones that came before and little motivation propelling the next ones.  Still, what a great performance.

Another late night game preview....gotta love it....

Lakers couldnt handle the magic and seeing how talented and great we are (see team record above) we should take care of business very easily. :-) For some odd reason, i dont feel good about this game. I have that feeling…..deep down in the pit of my stomach….BUT who knows….maybe there show up, forget about their paychecks for once and play a decent game……or……..just blow chunks and kiss the season goodbye…..(or has it been kissed goodbye the moment they lost to the nets and minny? :-D

Get ready...

We will win tomorrow. The Magic should have lost that game to LAL and now they are gonna get a good dose of karma when they lose to another LA team. I already have my TIVO set to record the game because I am gonna wanna watch it again.

by Mr.Sparkle on Mar 9, 2010 2:46 AM PST reply actions

Yes, they probably should have lost that game.

Salvatore did everything he could to keep the Lakers in the game. I’m surprised the Magic were able to overcome that.

A (slim) chance for a big win

So long as EJ is on the court tonight I would not write this off as an automatic loss. Unless Orlando starts hitting their 3s early it shouldn’t be too difficult for us to stay competitive until the 4 quarter. Whether or not we can prevail where Kobe and the Lakers failed in the final minutes is another question though…

Anything can happen

the Nets beat the Celtics last week in Boston no less. The Magic are lobbying for playoff position with the Celtics and Hawks right now so I doubt they will overlook us. Then again any team that relies so heavily on threes can go cold for a night. Still I expect a double digit loss where we are trailing throughout.

FA in 2010.

by ClipperChuck on Mar 9, 2010 8:32 AM PST reply actions

I expect a competitive first half

and then a dramatic fold in the second half, where Kaman ends up with 3 shot attempts and most of the starters are benched for key stretches of the 3rd.

Not unrelatedly, the Knicks pulled off a squeeker over the Hawks the other day. So they’re catching up to us in wins.

I played ESPN’s draft simulator last night for the better part of an hour. (How pathetic is that!) I’m here to tell everyone, then, that if we stay in the 10th spot like we are now, we are NEVER going to wind up with the top pick. My index finger is still sore from hitting the reshuffle button so many times.

It's certainly doubtful

But hey, a couple of years ago, Chicago jumped from 9th to 1st.

2nd would be fine too. Evan Turner is a stud and would fit in nicely with our squad.

Supposing...

we got the 1st pick, but could then trade for Turner and a future non-lottery pick. What do you think?

Can't

You just can’t trade Wall. It’s begging to look stupid. I’m not saying Wall is a sure thing, but you just can’t risk it.

And in this league, it’s always quality over quantity. You take the superstar over the two starters every day of the week.

I like Turner a lot, but Wall’s ceiling is way higher. Gotta roll that dice.

by madglove on Mar 9, 2010 11:21 AM PST up reply actions

Yea, it's begging to look stupid.

And perceptions really matter, don’t they. I mean, even if the Clips decided that Wall was somewhat overrated, we might still feel compelled to take him.

Wall probably isn’t overrated, but Thabeet evidently was. I wonder if Memphis felt the eyes of the league and decided to set aside their own doubts.

Not sure Thabeet fits

Quite a few people had their doubts about him and I don’t know anyone who thought he was a sure thing.

I think with guys like Thabeet and Oden, it’s the lure of a rare quality center. This league has quite a few talented guards running around, but not all that many quality bigs. And people can’t get away from the thinking that you need a quality big to win. So they pass on a more talented wing for a less talented big.

But generally yea I agree with you that GMs do the safe thing just so they don’t look stupid in front of their peers. I can understand that. That way if you pick a bust, you can always fall back on “everyone else would have done the same thing.” Nothing like the stupidity in numbers excuse.

I got us the 1st pick in 3 tries

send me to NY (or wherever the lottery takes place), I’ll be the lucky charm. Then again the guy who went for us last year did get the job done.

Let's send that guy from the Löwenbräu commercials

You can join him, seeing as how you just put my entire evening’s efforts to shame.

Maybe we can get Gus the mule to go along as well.

Off Track But Great News - Wizards Sign Livingston To 2nd 10-Day Deal

Wizards Sign Livingston To 2nd 10-Day Deal

Mar 09, 2010 3:20 PM EST

Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld announced today that the team has signed guard Shaun Livingston to a second 10-day contract.

Former Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy, who had Livingston for his first three seasons, remembers when the point guard first hurt his knee.

“He went down right in front of our bench and soon as it happened, I thought ‘Oh my God. How bad is this for this kid?’ " Dunleavy said. "He had big-time promise. I coached Magic Johnson and other than Magic, I’ve never seen or been around a guy with that size, the vision, the ability to deliver the basketball, IQ, understanding of the game. He really got it.

Like many Clippers fans I too saw that horrible moment in Livingston’s life and in Clippers’ basketball.

Kudos to Saunders for giving Livingston a chance. I really hope he finds a way to stick around the NBA and contribute even if on a limited basis.

that's cool

I really hope Livingston can get back into the league and play well, he was so promising as a young player in the playoffs.

He really had star power

Livingston had it all. I got to watch him play in high school his senior year. He was a complete player. He could shoot, pass, defend, jump, all the things you want a player to do. When he got injuried I think it more than just scared me. B/c everytime I played basketball I thought about that injury. Good thing for me, I am no longer playing as much as I once did, lol.

Hopefully, he can overcome his fear of the injury, b/c I am sure that he too thinks about the injury everytime he steps on the court.

One memory that stands out for me was one play in his rookie season

I believe we were playing the Bobcats and we by one point with about 7 seconds left. Livingston had 5 fouls but had been playing well all game. We needed one more point to avoid a loss and Livingston was going to be our trigger man. Livingston went nearly coast to coast in 5 seconds and got the lay up with only a second to spare. Now keep in mind that not only was this a great play, this was a rookie making that play. I can only wonder what type of player Shaun would be if it wasn’t for that fateful injury.

LeBron or Bust !!!!

Best of luck!

He’s my favorite clipper all time. Cant’ say why, but he was the reason i was so into games when he was around. I think i’ll rock his jersey at the next game i go to.

by EJay on Mar 9, 2010 1:43 PM PST up reply actions

Stay positive

The next three opponents are exactly the same three teams the other LA team just loss to on recent road trip. so what do you think the little brother is going to do?

But when we played the Bulls in our last road trip, the Bulls were red hot, just won six or seven games against playoff teams, this game will be interesting to watch.

by Pats fan in CA on Mar 9, 2010 1:58 PM PST reply actions

Just heard on ESPN radio

that Baron is not in the starting lineup because he missed the morning shoot-around. Oh, and EJ is out for today as well.

During the famed winning streak in January it seemed as though one player would always step up big in each game while the rest of the team played solidly throughout. It’d be nice to see something close to that again. Solid basketball.
