My experience at the Clips/Lakers game
That game was one of the funner games I've been to, right up there with the Memphis game where the Clippers erased a 20 point deficit in the 4th. After parking, my dad and I were walking toward Staples and we noticed a lot of cops, tickets sellers, and people. As we got to Staples there were so many people, and I'm not used to seeing so many people at Staples because not many people go to Clipper games. I laughed when we got to our seats because among the Clipper decorations there was a sea of yellow. I did not expect to see so many Laker fans. I want to say it was 80/20 Laker fans to Clipper fans, but it was probably 70/30. There were two Clipper fans in my section.
When Kaman got fouled early in the game, he was booed at the foul line. The cheers were louder when Lamar Odom made a basket compared to when Steve Blake made a basket.
There were a couple moments when Laker fans went completely quiet. The first was when Mardy Collins made that crazy layup and the foul. Then, DJ got that lob. Then Kaman drove past Gasol and slammed it down. But the best moment was Outlaw's dunk. I had a good view of Steve Blake lobbing it to Trout and I saw how it was off-line, but Outlaw dunked it so hard and so fast I could barely see it. It was vicious. (Here's a video: Mardy is #8 and Outlaw is #3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9kw55-u4RRA)
Another fun moment was when Steve Blake picked Derek Fisher's pocket, and the Fisher did one of his dirty fouls on him. It seems like Steve Blake is always causing tension, lol.
Throughout the game, these Laker fans behind me had some weird conversations. They started out talking about how the Clippers were lame, bla bla bla, and they mentioned how Adam Morrison and Derek Fisher were terrible and should be traded to the Clippers. When the Clippers had a good 12 point gap on the Lakers, every time the Lakers made a basket one guy would go, "We're back in the game". He must have said that 5 times. When it was clear the game was out of reach, his friend said, "I'm mad, I'm going to go on a Clipper rampage. The cops can't stop me". It was annoying to listen to.
DJ played well with 10 first half points, but he had some foul trouble so he was subbed in and out a lot in the 2nd half. Travis Outlaw also played well in the 2nd half, and he ended up with a double-double. Mardy played well, and it was surprising to see him considering Bobby Brown played the point the previous games. He still can't hit a jumpshot though. Craig Smith looked animated out there, and got some good buckets when we needed some energy in the 3rd and 4th. He was also sporting a mohawk. Steve Novak was fun to watch too. He had this one play where he faked out a Laker (Brown, maybe?) and shot it over him. It was impressive.
Around the 3rd quarter my dad and I were talking about how it seemed like Steve Blake was getting a lot of rebounds. It seemed like he was always waiting around the basket for those boards.
I think it was in the 3rd where Travis Outlaw and Lamar Odom got T'd up. Anyone know what that was about? (Again, Portland guy causing tension, lol)
During one of the breaks they showed a sleeping Laker fan on the screen. That was funny.
At the end of the 4th, Steve Blake fouled so he and Outlaw could get a standing ovation as they subbed out. That was nice to see, except it wasn't very loud because most Laker fans had left and there weren't much Clipper fans. (Kaman didn't get one because he was already on the bench, lol). When they announced Blake was subbing out, they showed on the screen that he had a triple-double, but didn't announce it.
Ultimately, it was a great way to end the season. It may have cost us a couple ping pong balls, but it was worth it to beat the Lakers and have all their fans who showed up to the Clipper home game disappointed. I'm also glad Kim Hughes's last game was a win.

Great post, nice summation.
I’m glad Hughes and the team won, but one question, when are Laker fans not annoying?
Laker fans = annoying
No doubt about it. I’ve spent a lot of time at Staples, both for work and for Clipper games. Nearly all of that time is spent there is in the Spring, during basketball season, so I constantly hear people talking about basketball, mainly Laker fans. This has been my experience over the past few years:
Almost every Laker conversation I’ve had the unfortunate experience of overhearing has been filled with extremely stupid comments.
Like, “Luis Scola deserved what Fisher did to him last year.”
Or, “The refs never give Kobe the whistle, and he gets fouled so much.”
Or my personal favorite, “I just don’t like LeBron. He just doesn’t seem as honest as Kobe.”
Huh.
I never hear proper basketball comments.
Like “They need to stop playing selfishly and work the ball from the inside out.”
Or “Kobe was stupid for getting ejected from the game. If he had kept his temper, we might have had a chance to win this one.”
Maybe I expect too much.
But this isn’t even the real issue. What really, really grinds my gears about Laker fans is that they are the most obnoxious bunch of knuckleheads I’ve ever been around. They are constantly assuming that they deserve to win every game, no matter how they play. If they lose, it’s because they were cheated out of their deserved victory.
They boo just because it’s fun to demoralize the other team, especially when they’re up 20 points. And especially when it’s my Clippers. They do it because it seems to make themselves feel better about themselves, like most bullies. Would we do the same thing if our positions were reversed? Possibly, but I don’t think we’d ever do it in such petty fashion. We’d gloat by describing how we had much better execution and playmaking down the stretch. They’d gloat by describing how none of our players deserve to be in the league “because they just suck.”
And that’s why I love the Clips and will never, ever root for the Lakers. Good luck Oklahoma. I hope KD sets some records.
On a related note, I think I might have some anger issues.
the best thing about laker fans, is that they always think that every team in the nba is ready to trade their starters for like derek fishers corpse, and adam morrison and luke walton or something terrible.
SO F*cking TRUE that made me laugh..
We are going to trade Morrison for Lebron and Nbenga for D Howard
I went to a Lakers-Wolves game 3 years ago (free tix and a chance to see KG at that time) and I still remember some of the comments… Some lady behind me after Kobe got called for travelling: “How is that travelling? He didn’t even dribble yet.” I turned around and had to explain the pivot foot. Her response: “But he didn’t dribble.” I gave up after that.
Nice post
I was at the game too. I went to both Clipper home games against the Lakers this season and we won both of them. Coincidence? hmm

As long as we win more than 8 road games like we did this season.
LOL that would suck. We’d be the first team to win every game at home and then still miss the playoffs.

Yeah we need to win more games on the road
but it is cool that we had a winning record at home.
LeBron or Bust !!!!

yeah but unfortunately, every other game I went to was just plain terrible lol
I was able to see the two wins against the Lakers, but I had to sit through the suns, hornets, and spurs blowouts. not exactly the smartest choices of games to watch.

Shorter Phil Jackson:
Waaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh!!!!!
Sorry, had to put it in somewhere. It’s obviously rubbed off on the players and their fans.
I can't tell you the number of times Lakers and Celtics fans have told me that the Clippers should be in the D-League or that a WNBA team would beat them.
I hate Celtics fans even more than Lakers fans. Completely obnoxious, even when they’re winning. They’re the same Pats fans that whine about how the Steelers fans brag about their six rings, but then they’re the first to brag about lifting Banner 17. But yet, they can’t even come out to support their team even in a winning season. They were 12th in attendance both last year and the championship year. And in a losing season, they’re nowhere to be found. The Celtics were 19th in attendance in their 24-58 season.
Clippers // Chargers // Rays // Panthers // Gators // Boise State
LA is the Clippers' city, the Lakers just play in it!
I can tolerate Celtic fans much more then Laker fans
because even if they are obnoxious they are usually more knowledgeable then Laker fans and aren’t prone to saying stupid things like “that’s not a travel he only took four steps”.
LeBron or Bust !!!!
Per usual the Lakers are getting the
benefit of calls vs. the Thunder. But, don’t worry, Jackson will be sure to keep whining.
the worst is people from LA, who choose to be pats fans or red sox fans, AND laker fans.
I know one of my cousins choose to be a celtics fan becuase they won that one year, even though he’s in LA because he doesnt like the lakers. like picked a totally random team because tehy are a “winner”.
I also know all too many laker fans who are pats fans who claim its not becuase they were winning superbowls every year…. or dodger fans who becamse “angels fans” when they won their championships.
granted i’m from LA, but the region has the largest number of bandwagoners on earth. and then there are the “i am fans of both teams” so they can cheer for the clips sometimes, when in reality they are just laker fans but want to be able to win , should the clips (or the 2nd baseball team, or 2nd hockey team wins)
Something I thought about in regards to Laker "fans"
The majority of them, I liken them to those idiot soccer hooligans in Europe and Latin America we always hear about on TV all the time. We hear the stories about the drunken troublemakers, the ones who start fights, and one that cause. Let’s not forget the clear example of Laker fan buffoonery when they beat Orlando for the title…they turned over and set fire to vehicles all over Downtown L.A.
