Clipper STH Conference Call
As many of you know, there was a conference call today for all the STH's. I saw some people post that they wanted to know what was said in it, so i thought I would let you guys know. Ralph came on first, and introduced GM Neil Olshey, who was in Chicago for the Draft Combine. The set-up was that the STH's would ask questions and Olshey would answer them (or try). The first question was about the draft, and the guy asked about Ekpe Udoh and Luke Babbitt. Olshey said that he had Udoh and Whiteside coming in for a workout in Los Angeles, but that because we have Blake Griffin, he doesnt feel that PF is a need. He then went on to say that they are gonna take the best player available on the board when they make their pick. Someone asked about Mike Taylor, and Olshey said that he tore his ACL while playing in Serbia.
There were a lot of questions about the Coaching Search, and Olshey basically reiterated what he has been saying all along, that they are doing a lot of work behind the scenes and that they have narrowed it down to about 5 or 6 names. And when they feel "the time is right" they are going to move swiftly. He also kept saying it will not be influenced by outside sources. I dont even know what that means. People asked if he thought it was important to have a coach in place before the draft, and he said he didnt think so, because Coaches want to draft for need, but Neil sees the draft as a place for asset accumulation and he wants to take the best player available. It kind of sounds like he thinks a coach in the war room would get in the way of his "vision". He then went on to say that having a coach will be important for Free Agency.
People were asking about LBJ and Dwayne Wade, and Olshey said that the team has put themselves in a very good position with their cap space, and they are going to make a run at one of the max FA's, but he couldn't mention any names because it would be tampering. But it sounds like they have some sort of a plan in place and they are going to try to pull out all the stops to get Lebron to come to LA.
Some other interesting stuff was said in the call. One guy asked Olshey how the team will play next year. He talked about how the Suns never go anywhere with their Run and Gun style and asked if they are going to try to be a defensive team. Olshey said how all of our players we have under contract are good on D, and that they are definitely going to look at that going forward. Hopefully we'll get Thibodeau, because I think he'll be a good coach for this team. He also said that basically anything is possible going forward, and that we can trade up or down in the draft, sign a Max FA or break it up and get depth, absorb a contract, basically anything is on the table.
All in All, there was not a lot of new info said, but he did say all the guys on the team are already working out, besides Kaman, and that he feels it will be a really exciting summer. I hope he's right. I didn't write down all of it but if you guys want to know anything else you can ask in the comments and I'll tell you if he said anything about it.

Thanks for the info
Hahahah, I wonder what Kaman is up to now….shooting up cars? Driving his big rigs?
Sounds like the free-flowing offense that everyone was supporting during MDSr’s tenure has quickly ended after the Kim Hughes experiment. I wonder what the Status of Kim Hughes is. They are writing off the Sun’s style already….wow. Looks like they are looking for a MDSr that’s not MDSr.
It will be an interesting summer.
This is going to be my team, and we're going to rise together.

Thanks for the isight
Do you know if all the guys are working out locally (i.e. together) or did they all go back home to workout?
When i went to visit the training center
They told me it’s different for every player. They said people like Skinner work out back home, occasianly comes back to LA. Smith, Outlaw come to the training facility once or twice a week. But they said Baron, Blake, and i think DeAndre workout 5 days a week. It’s more of a personal workout then a team one.
I got like 3 emails and automated call reminders for this call
unfortunately I didn’t have time to call in. Best player available is the best move considering we have 9 open roster spots.

Ha Ha Ha
Yep, Alvin Gentry and the Suns never get anywhere.
Here we are in the lottery again and they are in the conference finals. I wish we could never get anywhere like them!!!!
Gotta say this is the most exciting summer for a long time as a Clipper fan (although I did enjoy the few minutes we had of Baron and Elton before it blew up!)
Bingo! Oh me oh my!
Yeah
I prefer the Suns version of “never getting anywhere”.
Do not worry. (Matthew 6:27)
to be clear..
Olshey didn’t say that, a STH did. Olshey just stated that defense is important and that he is going to look for that in a coach.
You mean that the summer
we spent our time debating about Ramon Sessions wasn’t your most intresting summer?!? :P
Ha Ha
How could I forget!!! From his performances this year, I’m glad we didn’t sign him up for the mid level now.
Bingo! Oh me oh my!

I was out last night in MB and saw (separately) both Gasol and BG out and about. Very different – Gasol on a double date, mature guy, and BG acting like a 21 year old doing what 21 year olds do just fooling around with a big group. Funny, I wasn’t sure it was BG at first because he didn’t really look all that big close up.

I’ve seen BG a few times around town but never seen him drink. He does go out and socialize though. There is a big difference in how a 29 year old behaves and a 21 year old behaves as I’m personally finding out.

Right
To be clear I didn’t see him drinking. Just acting like a 21 year old. Sometimes we forget just how young these guys are.

Outside influences
And when they feel “the time is right” they are going to move swiftly. He also kept saying it will not be influenced by outside sources. I dont even know what that means.
I think they are addressing the “LeBron picks his own coach” notion here. The outside influence in question being the Lebron camp.
“When the time is right…” – means one or more of the coaches they are considering is currently with a team still involved in the NBA playoffs and they don’t want to create a distraction for him.
Agree...
Could indicate we are looking at Thibodeau…I hope so!

Thanks for the post....
As a non-Kaman supporter, have to say it troubles me a great deal to know that in a defining summer such as this one, our veteran “leader” (due to him being with the team the longest) is the only one NOT working out already. Fine, I know it’s early, as I’m sure the Kaman supporters will quickly point out, but come on. Everyone else sense the urgency in wanting to get this team to the next level. Furthermore, his performances were the worst (expectation wise) during the second half of the season, he should be the first one in the gym. In addition, your the team vet, you should be leading by example. Build some team chemistry or something. Damn you Kaman, the season is over and you still can’t get things right.

In his defense
He is getting married this summer, so A. he’s probably on his honey moon right now or B. he’s preparing to go through the ceremony. Also, it’s only May. He has the next five months to get into shape. He’ll be good when the pre-season starts.
Rest up big guy and congratulations.

He has a facility in Michigan
and he trains there every summer. Considering how much he improved last year it seems to work.

This
People got worked up last off-season because Kaman wasn’t training in LA, too, but he showed up to camp in great shape. It’s the off-season, and Kaman is a vet with a great track record in regards to off-season conditioning. This is a non-issue.
Thank you for the insight....
I’ll man up and admit that I was being a little hasty, and a little judgmental considered my negative bias towards Kaman.
So first and foremost, congrats is in order for The Caveman. Might not be a fan of his game, but we’re all family here at The Nation, and I’m happy for the man. Take your time and enjoy time with the Mrs.
Secondly, was unaware of him working out in Michigan. Although, it would be great if he catches up with the other fellas later in the summer to build on the team’s chemistry, it is good knowing he uses his summers wisely.

Too early to do that anyways
considering only 5 of our guys are under contract we don’t have the bodies to even scrimmage. Once the dust settles in late July we can start speculating on what Kaman should be doing.

Wait Kaman has a lady friend?
Hope she doesn’t end up on NBA Wives tv show
I was surprised too
but I remember Ralph Lawler mentioned it on tv. Now I wasn’t sure if he was getting married of having a kid…
I don't think it's a kid...yet.
Somebody posted a pic of her on here not too long ago. She had a facebook and had some of his family members as friends. I can’t think of the name right now.

The call was a joke
It was just the same nonsense that we hear every year. They talked about how the future is so bright with the 5 guys we have under contract, the 8th pick, and our cap space.
The season ticket renewal deadline was today and this was just a way to get people to renew.
I canceled my seats today. There’s to much up in the air right now for me to continue to dump my hard earned money down the drain. If I want seats again I’ll wait until later in the year to see what happens in free agency. Sure I lost the seats that took me years to get, but it’s better than throwing away money.
Can't blame ya.. I'd do the same if I were a season ticket holder

Didn't you say the same thing last year?
Yet, when the season started you were once again a STH.

Blake Griffin
Just like last year, the renewal date was after the lottery. We won the lottery and were assured of Griffin. This saved the team a ton of ticket holders, myself included.
This year sucked the life out of me like no other. I drive from Santa Barbara for games and I got tired of wasting my time and money to watch a team that gave minimal effort on a nightly basis. I actually talked to Andy Roeser a couple of times on the phone and informed him of this. He was very nice and I was very shocked that he called me after sending a nasty email to him.
There’s no reason for me to renew right now though. We’ve only got 5 guys on the roster and are without a coach. If I want tickets again I’ll wait to see how free agency plays out.
Wassup with Olshey???
Is he even a good GM?
I think DTS is pulling his strings i the background. The Clippers are about to become (although they already kinda are) the Cincinnati Bengals of the NBA.
I don’t like Olshey. I want a new GM. Fuck, I want a new fucking owner, for crying out loud!!!
I renewed my seat, so I really hope they get shit right or I am out and ain’t no rep convincing me about coming back.

Wish someone would of asked about the medical staff
Improving that is just as important as getting a head coach. Also ask about bringing in a new GM.
what was the purpose of asking about MT?
was the guy trying to ask if he’d come back? weird…
Roger Sterling: To my knees, Don. They're bringing to my knees!"
Yeah
because you know when you have the GM on a conference call what your most interested in, is who is going to be the 3rd string point guard.
It was a pointless call because he couldn’t answer any real questions. Though he did say several times that BG is going to be a dominant player. If he is, won’t he be the first player to have missed a full year to injury in his first year and then become an impact player? I knew nothing more after the call then I did before. Which is exactly what I expected. I renewed just so I can be vested in how they screw up this summer.
Patience is for those who die waiting for something to happen
There's always a first
I’m not too worried about BG’s health, I think we will still get the same player we expected last year.
How much of a deposit % did you need to make to retain your tickets? The Clippers owed me about 20% of STH price from tickets I sold during the season. I think they applied that credit to my tickets.
