Why Not Rudy Gay
Hi All Clipper Fans,
I am just curious why everyone is so against the Clippers overpaying for Rudy Gay when we dont get James?
Blake Griffin recently stated that the team needs a tweener. Rudy Gay is not injury prone, is long, rebounds well and is one the best shooting small forwards in the league. His worth would be so valuable to give Blake and Kaman (The worst All Star since Jamal Mac.) space to operate in the paint. Moreover, I would prefer him over Joe Johnson because of his age.

The question is “Why Rudy Gay?” rather than “Why Not Rudy Gay?” in terms of the Clippers.
You have to remember, Gay needs the ball to be effective. He doesn’t create for others, takes quite a few shots, and isn’t a top twenty player. So why should he be paid top twenty money, let alone max contract money?

Because the guy
doesn’t utilize his talents well.

Signed a Max Contract with Memphis
Blake said we need a "tweener?"
When did he say that? I’ve never heard anyone utter that phrase in my life. Why would anyone WANT a tweener?
As for Gay, his problem is that he’s a chucker, plays little defense and doesn’t pass the ball. He’s also most certainly not one of the “best shooting small forwards in the league” at 32.7% from 3.
All that is based on the price he would cost to be a Clipper
He’s an RFA…and the Grizz would likely match a reasonable deal.
If we were talking about bringing Gay in at like $8 mil a year, I’d be interested.
For $8M, who'd you rather have?
Gay or Childress?

Childress
Better fit for the Clippers. He has better range and better D.
Gay is a better defender than anyone seems to think
But in Memphis no one is interrested in defending (only gasol does). It’s a bit hard to be concerned by D when you play with Mayo Z-bo and conley. Even more dude has all the physical skills to be a top defender.

The guy has the tools to be a star in this league.
Coming into the NBA, there were concerns if he would fulfill his potential. Star potential, but did he have the desire, intensity and focus to become one? We’re still waiting. I hope that it all comes together for him one day, but it remains to be seen. To me, that potential is what makes him interesting and enticing. I don’t love his game as it is now, but I believe that he can still become so much more. It helps that he is only 23 going on 24.

Tough one
Given the current team makeup I’d take Childress. Rudy Gay is a ball stopper.

Can't AFA be consider a tweener?
Maybe Blake said “we wanted AFA, he’s can be a tweener, a tweener would be good for our roster anyways.”
Only the bold part is what people heard
We don't need another option on offense. We have BD, EJ, Kaman, and Blake to score.
We need a rebounding, playmaking, long distance shooter. Gay doesn’t do ANY of these things remotely well (or well enough to justify megamillions). If we don’t land LeBron or JJ, we should look for guys who fulfill these needs: Tayshaun, Childress, perhaps even Iguodala (who does everything VERY well except perhaps shooting the long ball).
Simple as that.

Great Point on Morrow...
I think he would be a great addition to the Cips to spread the floor. As long as he stays committed to the defensive end (might take some used to after being with Don Nelson), he would be nice. I do not think he would be a lock for a starter though.
i live in warrior country and watch a ton of warrior games (i have no choice really).
morrow might actually be one of the better defenders on that team last year (not really sayin gmuch, azuibuike is pretty good but he couldnt play).
on top of that, the knock on morro was that all he could do was spot up shoot, but given no one actually watched the warriors last year, but i did , i noticed morrow was actually making a real effort to drive the lane, kick it out to curry etc. he had some actual growth in his game, though usually nellie wouldn’t let him play long enough to really show case it so he could play his 2 “pets” as most warrior fans call them monta ellis and corey magette (both of which are terrible players, no matter what their stats look like).
i also somewhat group rudy gay into the same mold as those 2. that is the feeling you get watching rudy gay.
By the way, Blake didn’t say the team needs a tweener. He said “I think adding a 3 that can defend and knock down open shots would be big for us. That’d help us out a lot.”

We would be held hostage until memphis decides what they want to do.
He’s a restricted free agent and we couldn’t do anything else. If the lebron sweepstakes
fail then we go after Joe Johnson. The way i see it we make Joe johnson a 5 year deal
70 mil with the first year at about 12.2 this way we can sign Rasual Butler 3x 13mil and
Rino for about 3X 7.5 mil.
Our team looks like this:
Center Kaman/Jordan
PF Griffin/C Smith
SF Johnson/Amini
SG Gordon/Butler
PG Davis/Bledsoe
Maybe sign Greene / Novak / and few other Scrubbs.
In my eyes this is an awesome team.
Joe Johnson will get the max
Too many teams have it to offer to not use it on him.
You forgot Warren!!
I’m sur he’ll become a top players in a few years!
by paris clips man on Jun 29, 2010 10:14 PM PDT up reply actions
Warren should be good.
But I find it hard to believe later on down the road he will be in the same bunch as players like Gilbert Arenas, Manu Ginobili, Michael Redd, or Tony Paker (top players found in the second round).
If he does great, but that’s like a once in-a-life-time chance
Tony Parker
was a 1st round pick (albeit a late one)
FA in 2010.

Also his shooting percentage indicates.....
he’s a chuckler! No thanks.
We have Baron already!
One chuckler per team please.
I'm all for Joe Johnson
Then we add in Sofo as a backup PF for Blake and Rasual and Craig Smith for added depth in case of injuries and what not, our team would be set.

LOL
If we add Joe Johnson we aren’t adding Rasual or Craig Smith or Sofo unless they’d be willing to take the veterans minimum and at least Rasual & Craig could probably make more elsewhere, who knows if Sofo would want to come over for a small contract.
either way
adding any max player still leaves open roster spots that needs to be filled.
I just suggested those 3 cause there was reports of Sofo coming to LA this summer, Rhino is from here and was super productive last season, and I just liked what Sual did last season too (despite the inconsistency). I’m open to Brian Skinner coming back too as our bench dude.
And I think it’d be nice having some veterans around that’s been with the Clippers for a season already.

i like rudy
my main thing is that hes a natural 3, hes very young and will grow with our core, and has decent enough range to help spread the floor.
im also a fan of jchill, hes a calming presence on the floor and can fit in at the three, but hes a bit older. joe johnson is a bit older than jchill, and hes more of a 2 guard, so i dont know how well he’d excel at the 3. he has a strong body but hes best at the 2. salmons is another nice player but hes older than jj..
i like getting someone young at the three, whose a natural three, which is why rudy (and lebron) are so appealing to me. we would undoubtedly have to overpay rudy, but he might be the second best option to go with this young squad.
what about beasley?
if miami is willing to just give him away should we get him if lebron bolts to miami? could beasley play SF?
Yes, Beasley can play SF
but do you want him on your team? Factor in mental and psychological issues to your answer.
(P.s. I’m all for the player, not his personality.)
miami tried at the 3
and he failed miserably, thats why they played him at the 4 and benched udonis this past year
ill pass on him
I would take the risk
he is too young, too talented, to be given up on just yet.
That's fine.
Neither could KD or LBJ in their first seasons, but they grew to become decent 3pt shooters.
i think his problems are exaggerated
and IMO he is relatively cheap for his potential

I would be willing to pay Rudy Gay
but not “overpay” him.
