Foye and Gomes - Clipperblog Analysis

I thought as we debate the wisdom of the Foye and Gomes signings that it might be helpful to review the analysis that Foster did over at Clipperblog and ESPN LA.  I thought that the analysis was intelligent and that it answers a number of the questions people may have about the signing of the pair.

Here is the citation: http://sports.espn.go.com/los-angeles/nba/columns/story?id=5366060

As I've indicated elsewhere, in my view Olshey's moves to date have been pretty good and I've been pleasantly surprised at the way that management has been approaching the draft, the coach hire and the free agents.  It appears that they have a plan and are moving with surgical precision to do what they think is best for the team.

Of course, any of us could second guess almost every move we do, but so long as the moves are reasonable, I can't complain, particularly given what we've had to endure over the past few years.  So I'm cautiously optimistic about the upcoming season because it appears that the new management system is putting into place a product that could be successful for years to come.

We shall see.  I'm looking forward to the season.

And you already commented on it here. Though failing to articulate who wrote the piece.

But I guess repeating appeals to authority, even if you aren’t sure who the authority is, is always worthwhile.

Good post

It’s good to refresh the discussion, and add the viewpoint of DJF. I read it awhile ago, maybe this morning, and there has been a lot of discussion in between. I read through the other long thread, which has a lot of good points and comparisons and obvious conflicts and differences of opinion.

You know me, I’m optimistic. I like the point that DJF makes about Foye and the pick and roll, and SP’s note on Foye as a tweener who backs up both BD and Gordon at times, along with Bledsoe. It’s an intriguing combination of forces. And there are differences, as it’s hard to compare Foye and/or Bledsoe with some of the other names mentioned, Steve Blake or Telfair or Duhon.

In the end though, my expectations are pretty low. Neither of the guys is an exciting signing, and it seems that we’re hoping that they’re solid and a nice improvement from the old dark days. I feel like I’ve been through this many times, hoping that Foye is a good fit and a pleasant surprise. These things just never seem to work out that great. Unless I’m mistaken, it has been a while since the Clips signed a guy for a low value who proved to be worth more than he was getting paid. That’s another complicated question I guess.

And Gomes is a similar case. They’re both chemistry projects. We know that Thornton had some capabilities and he provided some excitement, but he was lacking in some crucial areas. Other players can make up the slack, and you’d rather keep Kaman, Gordon and Griffin’s usage up to replace Thornton. So there’s an opportunity for a player like Gomes to contribute without being especially productive, along the old QRoss lines I guess. I have to say I was a bit disheartened by the way that Travis Outlaw played for the Clippers. There were some mitigating factors, but it was an example of watching another mediocre SF. Drew Gooden and Steve Blake were much more satisfying players. Their contracts are good, and I’m surprised at the money Outlaw got. And I expect that Gomes will just be okay, nothing to get excited about.

Saving the excitement for AFA. And Sofo of course.

I understand

I think Gomes is better than you do in a back up role on a good team. Gooden is a starter but can’t stretch the defense. Gomes is more of a tweener. He should fit in very well IMO.

Foye I think will be good as well in that role.

I guess that alot of it depends on the coach and his staff and the overall impact of management as a solidifying and stablilizing factor for the team. The signing is as much about them as it is about the players in my view.

Gotta say

I like your optimism lately, Jax. Good stuff.

I think Gomes and Foye will be good too, but I’m hedging my bets. Just waiting for the dust to settle, hoping to pick up some wind in the sails with summer league.

I think Jax optimism is proof that had a personal issue with Dunleavy

These moves that he likes are not any better than free agent moves that Dunleavy made in the past when he was “de facto” GM. And the Cook signing was pretty ridiculous. Still no starting small forward.

Was this draft any better than the Gordon/Jordan draft?

We can't really evaluate the trade for Blesoe until we get the details of the trade of a future pick.

If we traded that pick and it’s not top 10-protected, I think that would be a bad trade. If we are building from within, then why give up a potential top 5 pick who could be dynamite for a number 18 pick? If we are being patient and selective in Free Agency, then we should be patient in harvesting that TWovles pick. The value of that pick has been increasing every year.

Of course, management won’t seem to come clean and publish the details. Not good…

Lacking a big S&T or straight up significant sign

I am giving management a C- in FA moves thus far. I kinda think they put the cart before the horse with these first three FA pick ups. Landing a starting SF must be managements primary focus. Real opportunities were lost pursuing that pipe dream named Lebron James.
