Plan A - How Lebron becomes a Clipper (part 2)

Is Wade really thinking about leaving Miami!?!? New scenario alert of how Lebron becomes a Clipper (see scenarios 1-3 here).

4) If Wade convinces Bosh to join him in Chicago

Wade, Bosh and their agent are meeting with Chicago right now. This would be the second time in 24 hours that Wade meets with Chicago. They can both get the max or near max and form a starting unit of Rose, Wade, Deng, Bosh and Noah.  Not too shabby! This leaves very little room left for Lebron to go to Chicago unless they all took massive cuts and shipped off Deng...possible, but unlikely.

With a super-team forming in the East without Lebron, it's time to go West!

Props to Wade if he does go to the Bulls

He would be giving up 20-30 million in guaranteed money between the 6th year of the max contract and the state taxes.

Regarding the two max contracts?

I think they need to find a way to trade James Johnson and Taj Gibson to get closer. That would clear 2.85 million off the cap.

http://hoopshype.com/salaries/chicago.htm

The cap hold for each player is 400k, they would have 8 cap holds taking up 3.2 million plus the 19 million already under contract. That would leave them with just under $34 million. I think they might be able to keep Taj Gibson and still offer the max but they have to trade James Johnson somehow. He’s super cheap so some team would take him for free I assume. If either Wade or Bosh want to do a sign and trade then things all go to hell.

i think its idiotic to think that one of two stars wont take 2 million less to play for a chance to win

So all this talk about “oh no, that team still needs to shed 1.3 million to be able to offer another ‘max’ contract…”, does anyone think that’s going to stop them from making it happen?? Please! They’ll make it happen Cap’n.

by Takebb909 on Jul 2, 2010 7:41 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

Its more than 2 million

its 2 million per season which over the life of the deal is 10-12 million. That’s a lot of scratch. Would you take a 10-15% pay cut for a co-worker?

FA in 2010.

not to mention the agents

by Worlock on Jul 2, 2010 8:00 PM PDT up reply actions

we are talking about 14 million per, not $100,000.

The guys do get endorsementsan bonuses are in addition and there are side perks! No comparison to the modern day man.

by Takebb909 on Jul 3, 2010 12:03 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

It is still all about the money

These guys in the end want the most money and if they are going to a big market they want the same contract with the endorsements being just additional income. If you were going to use the C’s as your counter example (and the C’s are the only recent case I can think of) then remember that all of the big 3 were on the downside of their careers. Players don’t take pay cuts in their primes and they definitley won’t with the uncertainty of a new CBA. They want to get as much money out of this CBA as they possibly can, and don’t blame them I would definitely do the same.

LeBron or Bust !!!!

None of the Celtics Big 3 took a paycut either

They were already locked into their max deals, the only adjustment was KG signed a extension.

makes the clips a bigger player

big if. if wade and bosh go to chicago..

1. would be very difficult for the bulls to manufacture something for lebron. maybe a deng package, but im not sure how they’d do it.
2. miami would lose all luster without wade, and would pretty much be screwed as a franchise for years because of this offseason gambit, signin mediocre players to bigger contracts.
3. cleveland is still a big player and scott has been very smooth in his approach. but still, they’re shackled with mo and jamison, two players that have already come up small in big moments.
4. the nets also become a huge player, but their hole at the 2 is noticeable. but, their owner is rich and their coach is good, they might even emerge as a frontrunner outside of cleveland.
5. the clips become a big player because of their stable starting 5 with players already in place. however, sterling is still, as he always has been, a huge drawback.

by shap on Jul 2, 2010 5:53 PM PDT reply actions

Perhaps

they could also be the salary cap angels. They could just accept expiring deals with draft picks and start over.

if Wade and Bosh forward their mail to Chicago...

…Then count Carmelo to Miami a done deal, no matter who else is playing there.

by Takebb909 on Jul 2, 2010 7:46 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

You know, if Wade-Bosh go to Chicago

then you may be right about Lebron switching conferences. NJ or Clev won’t get Lebron to the finals, not against THAT team. Good argument.

CC is right that Wade would be taking a SERIOUS monetary hit. But there’s something to be said for two superstars joining up on a neutral team.

It's business

Lebron had first pick, he could have chosen a team from the beginning and the other players would fall in line.

wade and bosh meeting with their agent right now WITH chicago management present

clipper fans, we should hope this deal goes through.

also hope they all want max money, because it’ll make signing lebron that much more difficult. if they take pay cuts, then all bets are off, and chicago will rule the league for 5 years.

by shap on Jul 2, 2010 6:06 PM PDT reply actions

Lol, on top of taxes and one less year, would Wade also take a pay cut?

Shoot..

even without Lebron…

SG – Wade
PG – Rose
C – Noah
PF – Bosh
SF – Deng

Bench – Gibson, Johnson

Best starting five in the NBA. Gibson is a solid big. Will have to go dumpster diving for a bench but there is big pool of veterans willing to work for cheap.

by ClipperChuck on Jul 2, 2010 6:11 PM PDT up reply actions

yup

chicago is stacked even if they didnt go for lebron. frontrunner out east.

imo dwyane is a better player than lebron. lebron is a better sign because of his youth but right now dwyane is a better #1 option.

by shap on Jul 2, 2010 6:15 PM PDT up reply actions

They still need to trade Deng to make it happen.

I couldn’t see either of them taking the pay cut.

by Lawler 4ever on Jul 2, 2010 6:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Right

Even if they get rid of Gipson and Johnson, I still don’t see them with enough room. The 5 starters would be at around $53.6M, and then with 7 min guys to bring the roster to 12, they’d be at $57.1M, or about $1M over the projected cap.

But still, we’re only talking about Wade and Bosh signing for a half million below the max. Big deal?

"i know huh........freakin clippers man.....its like a wild ride rooting for this team....gotta love em....(sometimes) lol" In GrIfFin We TrUsT

by SilverClip on Jul 2, 2010 6:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Hmm

Yea, checked the math. You need 13 roster spots right?

If the cap is 56.1 million that means the max starts at 16.83 million a year (30% of the cap). That’s 33.66 million.

Deng, Rose and Noah make a combined 20,030,546 million next year. If there are 8 cap holds that would take 3.2 million.

That would bring their cap total to $56,890,546 or $790,546 over. Both guys should take a million less a year and they can keep Taj Gibson.

FA in 2010.

by ClipperChuck on Jul 2, 2010 7:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Taking 500K less than the max comes out to a little less than $3M over the course of the contract.

They end up making 94M and some change instead of 97M. Deal-breaker? They talk like it is. I think it would be worth the sacrifice, but it’s not my money.

by Lawler 4ever on Jul 3, 2010 4:34 AM PDT up reply actions

that front line seems awfully soft imo

Our front line with sofo, DJ, Farouq Blake Superior and LA-bron would punish those fools

by big0lbad on Jul 2, 2010 6:17 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

noah and bosh

pretty decent tandem. last thing noah is is soft imo

by shap on Jul 2, 2010 6:20 PM PDT up reply actions

Their weakness would be the lack of a center

and Wade would be the only real 3 point shooter. The Magic would probably destroy them but I am all for Wade and Bosh to Chi town if it means LBJ to LAC.

LeBron or Bust !!!!

by bestclipfan on Jul 2, 2010 6:25 PM PDT up reply actions

the weakness at center is much more of an issue in Miami

Noah is serviceable…maybe Brad Miller comes back…

by banandy on Jul 2, 2010 6:28 PM PDT up reply actions

for people who arent sure about salaries

http://hoopshype.com/salaries/chicago.htm

deng is the only bad contract, rose and noah still on rookie deals. hinrich is gone.

by shap on Jul 2, 2010 6:16 PM PDT reply actions

Good Idea

Wade & Bosh to Chicago, and LBJ to the Clippers would be the best way for them to create two really good teams. Makes much more sense then all of them going to Miami and having no one of note to fill out the roster, let alone the starting 5.

This would also give the Lakers two worthy opponents.

by ghost_ride on Jul 2, 2010 6:16 PM PDT reply actions

One problem with the super-trio in Miami

is that the Heat might still be 3 years away from a championship. With the Clips, James could move right on to business.

I still think James and Bosh to Chicago is the favorite scenario, but even that team might have to wait two years.

Hey, here’s a related salary cap question: Say Chicago/Miami ends up loaded with stars, and so there’s no room for a bench this season. Can that team then purchase a number of picks for the following draft, thereby filling in the roster? AND still have an MLE? …If a team can draft a pick while over the cap, then what’s to stop it from acquiring any number of picks?

Can't wizards

just draw back on the kirk hindrik deal? That would be sooo awesome

Even the Clippers, those longtime losers, thought they could be a player this summer.

What a deal!

5 years 99.2 mil besides playing with the best line up in basketball he also would get
a three movie deal from universal for 60mil and also gets a super home from century 21
california plus a four year endorsement deal at about 40mil. There are two other
endorsement deals at about 60mil. Also in the deal governor arnold would wave two
years of no california state income taxes. This guy oshley is a smart business man
or he knows a lot of people.

lebron is coming to la and he will be joined by the easter bunny and santa claus

Sterling couldn’t hang on to mid level players like Gooden.Thornton&. Blake. The Clippers will always be bottom feeders The Clippers big news will be when they sign Adam Morrison or Sean May to longterm contracts

Just sign Childress, Sofo, and Livingston 2.0 and feel the love.

If there is enough money left over and we can get him, pick up Ray Allen.

One writers viewpoint
  • Interestingly, Team LeBron set up meetings with the Nets and Knicks on Thursday (the two hungriest), Miami and the Clippers today, and… Chicago and Cleveland tomorrow.

The Clippers? No chance. It was no chance either way, but when they showed up at the meeting today with acting GM Neil Olshey and team president Andy Roeser, and without owner Donald Sterling or a coach (none hired)… well, that was just a snapshot of their dysfunction
