Chris Paul Trade

Let's go after Chris Paul.

Baron Davis & Chris Kaman for Chris Paul & Emeka Okafor.  Its better than what Orlando is offering (Nelson / Carter). Not sure if NO would want Davis back, but hopefully they give it a shot and it would definitely make this team a playoff team.  I don't see the Knicks having anything to offer.  Portland has pieces, but I don't think CP3 wants to go there.  He wants a major market and LA would be it!

I've been kicking around a trade idea for fun with my buddies

Like the trades I have posted here before:

NYK gets
Baron Davis
Minny pick

NOH gets
Deandre Jordan
Eddie Curry (expiring)
Aminu
2011 LAC draft pick

LAC gets
Chris Paul
Emeka Okafor

Of course, I can’t stop there. While I am salivating at the thought of getting Paul to play alongside Griffin, I would like to firm up the team a little more so Paul would commit to staying.

DET gets
Chris Kaman
2012 first round pick

LAC gets
Tayshaun Prince (expiring)

After next season once Prince’s salary comes off the books, the club makes a max offer to Carmelo Anthony. LAC would probably have to trade one of (or both) Foye or Gomes to ensure enough cap space for a max offer to Anthony. Playing with Anthony and Griffin (and Gordon) would hopefully be enough to get Paul to commit to LAC long term.

Thoughts?

by Michael White on Jul 23, 2010 9:17 AM PDT reply actions

Because they’ve accepted that they won’t get Paul. NYK gets a PG they need and that Minny pick which is supposedly so very valuable.

by Michael White on Jul 23, 2010 11:00 AM PDT up reply actions

I like the first part...

But the second part is Kaman PLUS A PICK for an expiring Prince. Why does Prince cost Kaman plus a pick?
Personally, I think Carmelo’s a punk, but I can see why you’d want him.
So, yeah, sure, on the first half, not enough on the second.

by John Raffo on Jul 23, 2010 12:42 PM PDT up reply actions

The reason I threw a pick in there is because I assume that Detroit will want to pair up Prince with Ben Gordon in a trade. LAC wouldn’t want to or be able to do that, so to make up for that I gave them a pick.

I’m fairly certain the Pistons would move Prince for free if the counter-party was willing/able to take back Gordon. Prince is their only shot of moving that dreadful contract.

by Michael White on Jul 23, 2010 12:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Makes sense, but makes no sense...

In order to achieve your brave new world you’ve already given up Jordan, the Minny pick and the 2011 pick. The 2012 pick is probably gone in the Bledsoe trade. So, you’d probably have to give away the 2013 pick. Kaman and Iguodala are a pretty decent (if expensive) 2-headed five. If I’m DTS I tell you to come back with a better deal for Kaman.

by John Raffo on Jul 23, 2010 1:14 PM PDT up reply actions

The haul for Kaman isn’t that bad and you would already have a replacement in Okafor. It’s Kaman for an expiring SF. Having that much money tied up into two starting Centers probably wouldn’t play.

I’m not sure what you mean by bringing up Iggy? Are you saying you’d scrap the above and move on Iggy? Or you’d do the first trade and then try to bring in Iggy and try to keep Kaman?

by Michael White on Jul 23, 2010 1:20 PM PDT up reply actions

I meant Okafor.

It’s those weird names, Okafor, Iguodala, they don’t sound alike but I mix them up in my mind all the time.
I think Kaman’s valuable and redundant in your scheme I just hate giving up a pick AND Kaman to get an expiring contract.
Yours is the most logical trade I’ve seen in order to bring in Paul (assuming the guy would play in Clipperland). You don’t sacrifice Gordon or Griffin and that’s key. I’d just want more for Kaman.

by John Raffo on Jul 23, 2010 1:25 PM PDT up reply actions

kaman is valuable

there aren’t that many good centers and he isn’t old.

by XXDC2XX on Jul 23, 2010 3:52 PM PDT up reply actions

i wouldn't throw the pick

i really like the first part of the trade nad if paul wants out of NOH it makes sense for all the teams involved

by XXDC2XX on Jul 23, 2010 3:53 PM PDT up reply actions

I get your point though and its why these kind of blockbuster moves could never play out (amongst other reasons.) It’s too much of a gamble. Are you willing to move Kaman for an expiring contract on the hope that Anthony would sign? I could see why you wouldn’t be. The only reason I would be comfortable with it is because Okafor in means you won’t be caught with no center completely.

by Michael White on Jul 23, 2010 1:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Not necessary to give the pick to DET for Prince.

DET will look at it as gaining an All-Star center to start right away and let Monroe develop. Were they just in salary dump mode they’d insist on sending out Gordon, but they will be receiving way more than they are giving up.

Getting a All-Star level big for an expiring contract is a total win for them.

Maybe you are right. I hope you are right.

Maybe I’m going overboard in the offerings because as fans we tend to overvalue our own players so I wanted to sweeten the deals such that the other teams would be able to stomach it.

by Michael White on Jul 23, 2010 1:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Objectivity is key, not saying it's easy to achieve though.

But also important not to undervalue our own product. We see Kaman’s short comings night in night out, not sure other teams keep him under the same microscope.

I love Kaman, myself. Just not as a first option. But he is young, skilled, and has a decent deal. He’s a hot commodity. I only consider moving him if we get Paul or a similar superstar.

Those are nice ideas but if dallas has there trade Exception

Then this is how it should be done The clips trade Kaman to the Mavs for Dampier TE 13milli and a futrure 1st rounder and trade gordon (foye would really get his shot at redemption)a future 1st rounder this year 2nd rounder and the TE from dallas for paul and okafor this works because the NO gets cap relief a good young player and futrue young players. But most importantly they get cap relief to start over the clips could do this because right now they have 10milli in cap space gordon contract is from 2 to 3 milli the contracts of okafor and paul are some where between 23-25 milli clips still have a milli to play with and could then trade bdiddy to a team that needs a point guard like the pacers. Danny g would be an option but more than likely we could get troy murphy expring contract of 9milli or more and paul george and rush. The clips would have cap space the next year and Okafor played the whole season last year. didnt avg a double double but paul wasnt there. This gets the next big thing all the touches he needs to become great and still have a nice young core to keep paul happy and blake happy.

NO definitely doesn't want Baron back

Been there, tried that. Plus they don’t want to take back $$$.

I would give them Kaman and Gordon.

Do not worry. (Matthew 6:27)

by mikey p on Jul 23, 2010 10:56 AM PDT reply actions

I assume it would be a requirement that at least Okafor is sent out in a deal for Paul.

Okafor and Paul for Kaman and Gordon doesn’t work under the cap.

by Michael White on Jul 23, 2010 11:39 AM PDT up reply actions

This trade I've been pushing makes the most sense.

LAC, CHA, NOH.

Baron to CHA.

Erick Dampier, Chris Kaman, Minny Pick to NOH.

Chris Paul, Emeka Okafor, James Posey to LAC.

New Orleans gets out of two horrendous contracts, salary cap relief by waiving Dampier, a future lottery pick, and an All-Star Center with a decent deal.

CHA gets a vet PG they need with Livy backing up Baron. You know S-Jax would be thrilled.

And LAC gets the super star it needs with a serviceable center to start right away in Emeka. We also get a veteran SF in Posey who will be backed up by Gomes.

Win, win, win.

Trade also might work with IND as they are salivating for a PG and BD would work in O’ Brien’s sytem.

by Gordon for President on Jul 23, 2010 11:14 AM PDT reply actions

NOH would love it. They get everything they want in cap space, Okafor gone and Posey gone. And they get the Minny pick. To sweeten it, I’d give them Aminu too so that they can feel good about “rebuilding.”

I don’t see CHA doing it though. They might be interested in Baron, but as Mikey says they are signing off on somebody else getting Paul when in this case they could cut LAC out and get Paul directly.

Not exactly...

since obviously CHA couldn’t offer Kaman or the Minny pick

People say that, but CHA has no way of getting Chris Paul.

I’ve mentioned before, they are at or over the salary cap. They can’t take Paul on without absorbing at least Emeka Okafor. They have no young talent to send over, as well.

I would hope CHA is at least opportunistic enough to realize they can at least get Baron Davis for nothing.

That’s true. At least with this scenario, they get Baron and Paul is ensured to stay in the West.

I like it.

A few moments before reading your idea here, I was thinking about Baron, Kaman, and NO’s choice between the Minni pick and Aminu, all in exchange for Paul, Okafor, and Posey. Your proposal is probably a little more what NO has in mind, and the Clips give up the same pieces anyways. For whatever that’s worth, my proposal gets rid of the middle-team, plus NO still ends up saving ~$8M.

No chance NOH takes Baron.

by Michael White on Jul 23, 2010 4:04 PM PDT up reply actions

that's why my trade makes the most sense

Dallas would have to trade jkidd to get paul. Trade kaman for the TradeEx from dallas for kaman who they really want. Which leaves the clips with enough young players to trade and the money to asorb okafor. The clips dont have to gut their whole roster and to make this work. Not to mention the clips dont have to give up the minny pick (unless they already did by giving it to OKC) out of all the teams listed the clips can do what no other team can cap relief,a really good young player (all star type) and future picks hell if the pacers wanted bdiddy we could give them rush to(okc).

I doubt NOH trades Paul to a Division Rival.

I doubt C.Paul would approve coming to LA just because

with “L.James plan”, he has to go to New York so he can his dream’fantasy of a trio fulfilled… it’s been on his mind (at least allegedly) for a while now… even if that weren’t possible, Paul basically lists teams he knows have established “stars” (OK, maybe not New York cause Amare is meh-worthy). The Clippers don’t have any “established stars” as Griffin’s exact contribution capabilities remain unknown.

he can’t even use the excuse of trying to leave on good terms because demanding a trade pretty much burns any bridges that weren’t burned yet.

Another factor that makes the trade easier to swallow for NOH...

It’s not the Lakers trading Kobe. They at least have a MORE than viable replacement for Paul already playing right behind him in Collison.

I don't believe we have the right pieces to make a trade for Paul

Sure, if we get a third team involved to take Baron, Okafor, and/or Posey it could workout for NOH, but I don’t see any team doing that.

The only way we have any chance at CP3 is if we find a taker for Baron now and hope NOH decides to trade Paul closer to the trade deadline when we are able to trade our rookies and newly signed players. But, again, who’s taking on Baron’s contract? Indiana, for TJ Ford and Murphy or Dunleavy? Maybe, but I doubt it. The Bobcats, for Dampier? Doubtful also. It’s nice to dream and I don’t suggest we not try to get CP3. Things just don’t add up in our favor is all I’m saying.

If we get Paul, we'd wanna dump Baron...

Best thing I could come up with is…

Clippers get: Paul + Okafor + Posey

Pacers get: Baron

Hornets get: Kaman + Gordon + Dunleavy Jr. + Ford + 1st Rd. Pick (ours or Minny’s)

or…

Clippers get: Paul + Okafor + Posey

Bobcats get: Baron

Hornets get: Kaman + Gordon + Diaw + Augustin + 1st Rd. Pick (ours or Minny’s)

Can't get Paul but....

The Clippers won’t be able to get Chris Paul but maybe we can add another young piece. The Knicks really want Paul but don’t want Okafor’s contract. NO won’t trade Paul without Okafor so if the Knicks want Paul they’ll need a third team to take on Okafor’s contract. What team would be dumb enough to do that….. the Clippers!!!

New Orleans gets:
Kaman, Wilson Chandler, Randolph, Draft Picks and/or Cash from the Knicks
Knicks get:
Paul
Clippers get:
Okafor, Gallinari, Turiaf

Hornets still have a competitive team with a couple of young forwards to team with Collison and Marcus Thorton and clear some cap space
Knicks get Paul and can still possibly get Carmelo next year
Clippers get a high energy SF who can shoot and is only 21. Okafor is way overpaid but is still productive (82 games 3 straight years 12 ppg, 9.5 reb 1.5 blk???)

Clips build team around Griffin, EJ, and Gallinari. Don’t lose out on any young assests (Aminu,Bledsoe, Minny pick) Maybe if Bledsoe shows he can be a NBA PG in the next 2 years we can salary dump Baron for expiring contracts and draft picks.

We only lose Kaman and make the Knicks give the Hornets everything they want. If they don’t like it we can back out and then they can’t get Paul.

This is probably a bad idea…. guess I just want the Clips to do SOMETHING this summer

by Beasel on Jul 24, 2010 6:53 AM PDT reply actions

I hear ya, I want them to do SOMETHING too..

This summer has been semi-disappointing, and I’d really like for the team to do something. I kinda like your trade idea. I’m not crazy about trading Kaman for Okafor (without getting Paul too), but I do like the idea of picking up Gallinari. He’s got great size for an SF, and he’s really talented (and he’ll probably get better). I’d love to have him start at SF over anybody on our team currently. I HATE Turiaf, and I’d really like to keep him away from this team (it’s bad enough having Brian Cook already). Maybe we could throw him on the Hornets.. and since we’re helping the Knicks out, they can give us Toney Douglas too! :)

Okafor / Jordan

This trade idea keeps growing on me..

Having two BAD contracts (Baron and Okafor) would be scary, but the idea of Griffin, Gordon, and Gallanari playing together is very exciting. (Think of the nicknames!! The Killer G’s?? Staples Center could become the “G” spot!) Adding Douglas would be nice so maybe him or Bledsoe would develop into a starting PG quickly so we can move Baron’s contract. Knicks need to trade Turiaf to make the trade work. Think his contract is expiring so maybe the Hornets would take him, if not he can sit at the end of our bench next to Cook for a year. The best part of this trade is the Knicks would be on board 110% so they would do whatever they could to make the Hornets accept it. More picks, more $$$ whatever it takes. We just sit back and wait for the Hornets to say yes without losing anything else.

New trade idea to get Paul to the Magic...

Let’s get in on it…

Hornets get: Chris Kaman + Vince Carter + 1st Round Pick (from Orlando)

Magic gets: Chris Paul + Mike Dunleavy Jr. (or Jeff Foster)

Pacers get: Baron Davis

Clippers get: Emeka Okafor + Jameer Nelson + TJ Ford

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=26kuyym

C: Okafor / Jordan
PF: Griffin / Smith / Cook
SF: Gomes / Butler / Aminu
SG: Gordon / Foye / Warren
PG: Nelson / Ford / Bledsoe

I like the depth!

I like that trade…..however, I don’t see NO doing it unless they get a high 1st…..which would probably have to come from us. What if we gave them our first (or the minnesota one, whichever is lower) and got Orlandos first in the trade…….we could use that one to pay off OKC for Bledsoe.

There should be zero trades for CP3 unless we know he will stay after next season

Let’s say we pull of a trade that moves the likes of Baron, Kaman, DJ, and/or Aminu (and maybe picks) in return for players the likes of CP3 and Okafor and/or Posey

If CP3 decides to leave and go to NYK with Amar’e…there’s nothing stopping him and we just dumped our future for the contracts of Okafor and Posey, and maybe a TPE (from NYK when he decides to sign there after this coming season). Absolutely NOT worth it!

I say we either try our luck to sign him as a Free Agent later or be involved in a sign-and-trade, if we REALLY want CP3.
