Around SBN: Dana White Announces Koscheck vs. Hendricks for UFC on FOX

Quotes of the article,

"I've played a lot of point guard out here with this type of talent and I think I'll be able to adapt later on," Gordon said. "I'll probably play a little more 1 this year because we don't have that many point guards so I'll adapt to doing that a little bit."

"It's got to be [a fresh start]," Gordon said. "With a new team and a new coach it's going to be very different."

From Steve:

A timely article from Dave McMenamin, given my post about Team USA yesterday. Hat tip to citizen baronycamby for posting the FanShot.

As I said yesterday, it's defense that will get EJ onto this team. I'm not sure I agree that Chauncey Billups, Derrick Rose, Rajon Rondo and Russell Westbrook should all make the team. In fact, I think that would be a big mistake. Other than Billups, none of those guys are perimeter threats (not one of them has even made 1 of 4 three pointers in their NBA careers). That's a pretty clear recipe for disaster in the international game, where they play a lot of zone and there's no defensive three second rule. Rose has supposedly worked on his shot, but is this really where we want to find out how that's going? Rondo and Westbrook are essentially the same player - you don't need both of them.

So assuming they take five guards total, I would have EJ battling with O.J. Mayo and Stephen Curry for two spots. But it sounds like the battle may be for a single spot. Which would be a mistake, but not the first one Team USA has made. EJ's advantage is that he's a better defender than Curry or Mayo. We'll see if that does it.

It's good to see that he feels good about his performance and that Colangelo had nice things to say about him. Last year he was a total non-factor. Of course, he never had any chance to make that team, but he did not have a good camp either. So hopefully this is good for his confidence.

Seems strange that he was playing point for Team USA in Vegas, when they were already awash in point guards.

Thanks for posting this...

I agree with on that the team does not need all those point guards. I am also not a fan of Billups. He looks to score more than he should, and he is old. I would think they would take 16 players as they need shooters and defensive players.

These are good words from Colangelo comparing guards Russell Westbrook, Derrick Rose, Eric Gordon and Rajon Rondo favorably to the 2008 gold medal-winning Olympic team’s defensive corps.

I would like to see a team of…..

PG Derrick Rose
PG Rajon Rondo
PG Russell Westbrook
SG Eric Gordon
SG OJ Mayo
SG Stephen Curry
SF Kevin Durant
SF Danny Granger
SF Andre Iguodala
SF Rudy Gay
PF Gerald Wallace
PF Kevin Love
PF Lamar Odom
C Brook Lopez
C Javale McGee
C Tyson Chandler

Starters:

PG Derrick Rose
SG OJ Mayo
SF Kevin Durant
PF Kevin Love
 C Brook Lopez

They need Billups

everyone besides him and Odom are 27 or younger. They need a veteran voice in the huddle. Besides Billups game translates especially well in the International game.

they absolutely need Billups more than any other vet

For exactly that. He would still be the leader on or off the bench, like Kidd last time.

Gordon is actually one of the best players for the Olympic type game to bring some balance. Skilled with great athleticism.

Yeah, I know but I am not a fan of Billups

I know he was a great player at one time, but he and Odom on this team along with guys like Jeff Green, Tyson Chandler, and Gerald Wallace kind of scare me. Chandler hasn’t played in like two years, lol. Odom said himself that he has done nothing since the Finals. Green is a nice guy, but he doesn’t bring much at the 4 spot. Gerald Wallace might be motivated to play in Charlotte, but he does not show up when it matters..ie the 2010 Dunk Contest, lol.

EJ would do very well in FIBA as the 3pt line is closer, there is no defensive 3, and you can hand-check above the free throw line extended.

by NBAFAN8 on Jul 24, 2010 3:10 PM PDT up reply actions

O.J.

is doing the same thing as EJ, he even played SL so he can practice running the point.

by baronycamby on Jul 24, 2010 12:57 PM PDT reply actions

can someone do a comparision of oj and gordon

Just curious to see how they even. Out

Even the Clippers, those longtime losers, thought they could be a player this summer.

by highriser on Jul 24, 2010 4:49 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

O.J. Mayo-
Better playmaker then EJ
Better shooter off dribble
Better Star state of mind
Better ballhandler

Eric Gordon-
Better catch and shooter from all over the floor
Much stronger and better NBA body
Better going to the rim and finishing
Better in transition

Similarities-
Poor Rebounders
Small 2’s
Potential point guards, both working on playmaking abilities

by baronycamby on Jul 24, 2010 6:16 PM PDT up reply actions

The roster will be cut down to 12.

It needs to be Rose, Mayo, Gordon, Curry, and Billups as the guards.

Durant, Granger, Wallace, Odom, and Love as the forwards.

And, finally, the two Lopez brothers as the centers.

Chandler is a lock

he’s been the best center by all reports. He’ll beat out Robin Lopez. Rudy Gay is also a lock, he’s been the best player at practice and he can also play the 4 in international competition.

Iguodala will beat out Mayo or Gordon for one of those spots. The fact both Mayo and Gordon are undersized 2s to begin with (and therefore can’t play the 3) in addition to being poor rebounders dooms them. Only one of the 2 can make the team… and it will depend on which one is shooting better. And the winner of the 2 will probably have to settle on being an alternate.

I’m just saying what I’d roll with. I like Chandler, though. Always have.

Robin Lopez has already pulled out because of back issues

I’d just leave Mayo off the team. Gordon is a better shooter which is what the team needs. Add in Westbrook who can play off the ball as a lock down defender like he did at UCLA.

by turs12 on Jul 27, 2010 11:01 AM PDT up reply actions

they really should keep gordon

and this isnt just with clipper bias, im sure its known that gordon is one of the least flashy names out there.

but this team badly needs shooters, which is why i think curry and gordon should both make the team.

should that is. im pretty sure curry will make it, i hope ego can too. great learning experience.

Hmmm

WoW on the national team.

Anyone else for Billups/Durant/Wallace/Love/Chandler to start which Mayo, Gordon, Gay and Green staying as far away from Turkey as possible?

Hmmm, anyone know how SG's play in their third year in the NBA?

Kobe, KMart and Manu all took nice jumps in their third year…if EJ can jump from his 16ppg to say, 20? I wonder how that might change our win total this upcoming season.

would have a giant ripple effect

more aggressive ego would pull offensive concentration onto him and give the bigs more space to operate.

Great game for EJ!

He came in and did what he was expected to do, or maybe not what they expceted him to do, lol.

Gordon impressed me with not only his shot 4-7 from 3pt, but his defense on and off the ball. He had 2 steals and he was very active.

It was also nice to see him run point and bring the ball up the floor. He also called his own number 3 or 4 times. I hope the team and coaching staff realize that EJ is capable of doing these things every game.

Btw, for those that did not know, EJ played in this blue and white game last summer and played just 16 minutes scored just 2 points. He was 0-2 from 3pt and 2-2 from the ft line. This year EJ played 26 minutes and had 16 points on 5-10 shooting, 4-7 3pt, and 2-2 ft.

by NBAFAN8 on Jul 24, 2010 9:32 PM PDT reply actions

That is most likely the case, so it seems :-(

Total BS as he is a better defender than both Curry and Mayo. Maybe it is a good thing, as he did miss 20 games last year with the leg injuries. Oh well he showed us all something in the blue/white scrimmage with the 16 points (4-7 3pt shooting) and the 2 steals.

Hopefully the Clips will have a better year

And EJ will get more national attention. When your team wins 19 and 29 games the last two years, it’s tough to break through on the national scene. Compare EJ to Westbrook and how much ink Westbrook got last year because OKC had such a terrific year.
