Team is worst than last year

After thinking about it I have come to the conclusion that the Clips this year are considerably worst than this year.   Going into preseason last year with a healthy Blake Griffin last year at least we had one of the most underrated players in the NBA, Marcus Camby.  This year instead of Marcus we have a lot of young rookies and Ryan Gomes/Randy Foye.  I would rather have Camby than both of those guys.  Great trade fro Camby MDR.

A healthy Blake makes us better in every way

no matter who left or who signed (unless it was a superstar).

Worse than a team which never took the floor last year?

Possibly, I guess. But that’s not really fair to compare. We don’t know how that team would have done. Is it worse than the team that actually played last year? Maybe. I can make arguments both ways. But its a close call for me. The team is definitely not considerably worse than last year.

Positional Breakdown

First Unit
Baron vs. Baron
EJ vs. EJ
Gomes vs. Thornton (Advantage Gomes)
Griffin vs. Camby (Draw for now)
Kaman vs. Kaman

Second Unit
Bledsoe vs. Telfair (Advantage Telfair)
Foye vs. Ricky Davis (Advantage Foye)
Butler vs. Butler
Smith vs. Smith
Jordan vs. Jordan

Looking at it that way, I don’t see how the current team is considerably worse. Even if you say going from Camby to Griffin is a slight downgrade for now.

Plus, a better coach and GM than MDSr

Seriously, Mikey

do you think the new coach and GM contribute to making the team better, or not?

I think we will be alright and we need one more.........

At center because Jordan still hasn’t improved to where we all taught he should
be and if Kaman gets hurt then our season is over. I suggested for a back up
center Earl Barron and he comes in for a cheap price. This guy is a great free
thrower and has a great stroke from 10 to 15 feet for a center thats really nice.

Wow, two replies?

Can’t let it go, ey? Dunleavy is gone, except in your head.

Since they haven’t played a game yet, I don’t know if the new coach or GM are better, and I don’t know if the team is better. You claim it as fact that both Olshey and VDN are “better” than MDSr. Looks more like an opinion to me.

VDN has been a coach for two seasons, and Olshey has been GM for 5 months. I’m going to need a bigger sample size.

Funny, any time the issue is mentioned

you respond with internet photos, arguments, etc. I think your photo there applies to you more than me.

I think that replacing the coach is a good thing. We’ll see if it works out. As I recall you thought that the team would be better off with the change too. We both agree time will tell. Overall, when comparing the teams, I think that this factors in.

Let’s be adults here, shall we.

I don't know...

Al Thornton is better then we give him credit for. I expect him to thrive next year under a new coach and system.

by Newton Pham on Jul 26, 2010 12:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Ryan Gomes is a much better 3pt shooter and a better player overall.

Gomes career 36% 3pt and 258 made 3pt.

AT career 30.8% 3pt and 74 made 3pt.

by NBAFAN8 on Jul 26, 2010 12:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Agreed

You put Thornton on Phoenix, where he needs to do nothing but finish, and he’s easily one of the better scorers in the league. You put him on a team where he needs to be a playmaker, and he’s a black hole.

Al had a really good attitude and was always one of the most courteous players to the fans, and I’ve never felt he got credit for that either.

by Erik O on Jul 26, 2010 1:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Agree on Al

He was great in the Rookie/Sophmore games and in Summer league, where bball IQ was not required.

In the open court, outside of the constraints of an offense, he is talented.

Blake Vs. Camby

Blake will be a better scorer and is a lot more athletic. Camby would block more shots and getmore rebounds. But just by watching Blake last year in pre season, we have a lot to look forward to. I think people just want big names—- that does not mean if we don’t have them we cannot be good. I think nobody expected OKC to be that good and look what they did. Of course Kevin Durant is a star, but I think Blake can be that too

by ChrisS.Oaks on Jul 26, 2010 1:56 PM PDT up reply actions

Agree 100%

Last year Novak, Skinner, Collins, Davis, and Brown gave us nothing off the bench.

This year we will have Butler, Foye, Smith, Jordan, Aminu, and Bledsoe all contributing.

by NBAFAN8 on Jul 26, 2010 12:55 PM PDT up reply actions

I don’t expect too much from the bench this year either. Bledsoe and Aminu are rookies who looked pretty darn lost at times competing against other rookies. Jordan, Butler and Smith were on the bench both seasons, so no reason to include them here. Basically, it is Foye and Cook over Ricky/Mardy and Novak.

by Michael White on Jul 26, 2010 1:01 PM PDT up reply actions

The Chief...

with Sool and Gomes in the fold, not sure how much burn Chief will get…we shall see I guess. Probably will come down to if we are competitive, VDN will play vets and if we fall apart like usual he’ll give the rooks more PT.

I think the team is slightly better, possibly way better depending on Blunt Griffin.

Gomes is slightly better than Rasual, or so I believe after looking at PER and other stats.
Eric Gordon should be better.
What-The-Farouq and Bledsoe should provide something positive overall.
I expect Blake Griffin to be just as good as Marcus. I also expect Blake to have some games where he simply takes over and wins the game for the Clips. Marcus is consistent, but not dominant. Blake should at least have flashes of dominance.

Yay yay.

by KamanHomie on Jul 26, 2010 12:08 PM PDT reply actions

My point

My point was if Blake Griffin was healthy last year the team is not as good this year because of the loss of Marcus Camby.

by Clipper2425 on Jul 26, 2010 12:36 PM PDT reply actions

Well, were you happy about the team going into last year? Otherwise, I don’t know what we can go off of since the record from last year was completely without BG.

by Michael White on Jul 26, 2010 12:47 PM PDT up reply actions

But we didn't have Blake, not for 1 single game

so you can’t use him as the excuse that last years team was better…..he wasn’t apart of the team as far as being on the court.

Clippers Outlook

I think the Clippers have given themselves a good chance to win. I agree losing Camby hurts, but Kaman has stepped up and Blake Griffin coming in is a positive. I like some of the pick ups they made over the offseason. I think a new system under Vinny Del Negro helps as well. Indeed

I expect that EJ will progress. The USA practices can only help. I’m sure he is learning a lot of good stuff going up against some of the NBA’s other youngstas.

by mikey p on Jul 26, 2010 2:29 PM PDT up reply actions

And Kaman?

Just about everytime he has a career season he declines.

And also Kaman has only had career years when the PF isn’t a natural scorer. In te 07-08 season, he played great because Elton Brand was hurt. In the 09-10 season, he played great because Griffin was hurt and Camby isn’t a natural scorer. Will he regress a bit with Griffin by his side? His Griffin a natural scorer?

by JackduhSun on Jul 26, 2010 2:40 PM PDT up reply actions

I imagine his touches will indeed go down...but, I suspect that would be a good thing

It would probably indicate that the team is scoring a lot more in transition…which would mean defense is better and points are coming more easily…

by banandy on Jul 26, 2010 2:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Griffin is a scorer

He has a knack for putting the ball in from any angle.

Do not worry. (Matthew 6:27)

by mikey p on Jul 26, 2010 2:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Is he a natural scorer as a rookie after taking a year off basketball?

Regardless, I think Kaman might potentially be overhyped by people who don’t watch the Clippers So it might be.. last season Kaman> this season Kaman only because this season Kaman gets more touches?

by JackduhSun on Jul 26, 2010 2:54 PM PDT up reply actions

uh, yeah...Kaman will likely get less touches than he did last year

for sure, it could also be that he’s out of shape or whatever…but at any rate, I wouldn’t expect better numbers from him.

by banandy on Jul 26, 2010 3:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Less touches for Kaman equals more wins for us.

Love the guy, but so many games gone down the tubes because of Kaman turnovers. Whether it was putting the ball on the floor, an inability to pass out of double teams, or classic Mr. Flippy moves.

This year, with Kaman no longer the number one offensive option, I expect more wins, less PPG for him, but more RPG.

Win win.

disagree

Last season we lacked chemistry n energy. So this year even without camby I think we’ll have chemistry and energy for our young core so we 10% upgrade. We can’t say that the team was worst then last year. Let’s wait til preseason then judge.

Not for 10m per. Thrilled he got that, just not from us.

It makes sense for the Blazers to have payed him

they got all of the other star power covered in Roy and Aldridge, in Camby they get a nice vet presence who can rebound like crazy and block one or two shots a game.

Camby was easily one of my favorite Clippers.

I initially thought that it would be easier to part with Camby during the season, if we had no intention of re-signing him (because we were going to sign a big time free-agent!). We’d have a reason to start Griffin with no questions asked. If Camby stayed, perhaps he’d still feel that he was a starter. Let’s say that we somehow ended up with the same players in the draft and retained Camby. We could have given him an equivalent deal to the one he received in Portland and still are able to sign Foye & Gomes.

Kaman/Jordan
Griffin/Camby
Gomes/Aminu
Gordon/Foye/Warren
Davis/Bledsoe

We would still have around $2M left to sign another FA before going to minimum deals.
