Questions....

Does anyone know how much cap room we have left?

Does anyone know what the roster count is so far?

Does anyone know what happened to the $4 million we recieved from the Marcus Camby trade?

Does anyone know how where the trade exceptions we received from the Zach Randolph ended up?

Does anyone know what the next position the front office will be looking to fill?

Does anyone know what  the coaching staff has lined up as a perceived depth chart?

(Is Rasual Butler the starting 3, back up 3 behind Gomes, or 3rd tier back up behind Aminu?)

I just did too. :-)

The DVD story seems almost too preposterous to believe. I get the outside sense that Olshey and the Clips were playing dumb, for some covert reason. Clipperblog was suggesting a while back that their real discussion with Lebron concerned what might happen three years from now.

Like most things these days, the FO is either pretty clever or pretty lame. Inquiring minds would like to know.

I think...

lame

Some answers

1) Hard to tell since the Clippers are being extra secretive as they go about their business. Probably guess $6M or less at this point? Just a guess.

2) I have 13 after Butler?

3) It paid for two years of Brian Cook, duh

4) Any remaining part vanished when the team went under the salary cap and used that space to sign Gomes and Foye, and was going to expire on 7/17 anyway.

5) Ticket agent hopefully? Some dude called me and was real high pressure and lame. I told him to buzz off.

6) I would stack players by pay and assume that is the depth chart. Butler might be the exception if he is getting less than Gomes got.

I didn't count him

Despite the “partially guaranteed” language, it seems like the truth is that it is a make good contract. They can still cut him with little penalty. Except some cash. Which might be a big penalty to DTS depending on where his head is at.

You think Butler starts over Gomes?

What happened to Olshey being tired of having 2’s play as disguised 3’s?

No idea

It depends who VDN has confidence in.

Do we know anything about the signings they made?

Do we even know what the terms were for Bledsoe’s contract?

This new regime is mighty secretive.

by Newton Pham on Jul 28, 2010 12:38 PM PDT reply actions

Yes, that's one of the most important questions...

It’s significant and I think it will have to be made public eventually. Weird that neither team has revealed terms. It’s a terrible trade if its not top twelve protected. But it might be top ten or lottery or (shudder) top five?
I guess it depends on how you feel about Bledsoe. If Clips think he is their future starter, he and Gordon will probably be the smallest backcourt in the league. And in SL Bledsoe looked like a runty two pretending to be a one. Was he worth a number ten or twelve pick? …because that’s what you probably gave up for him.

Whoa, what up charts!

Seems pretty close. You are probably costing yourself some wins going Aminu over Smith at the 4, but it seems really close to optimal.

the chart is more showing positional ability over likely rotation

I think the real 2nd unit will be Foye, Butler, Aminu, Rhino and DJ….with a starter subbed in here or there throughout.

I'm excited for Rasual to play SG again...

I still hate it when he dribbles, but at least he’ll be able to play much more in his element.

Oh, now I see, if only LeBron was in the chart instead of Gomes. I was wondering what Gomes was going to say about LeBron bhahahahaha

Is Brian Cook a center?

I’ve been trying to get a straight answer there. My hunch is that he can play there in a pinch, but it’ll likely draw some blood.

Good chart!

Only way to stack them up – given that we need to get Aminu as much burn as possible, and Cook will only be useful if he is stretching the floor to give Blake and Craig room to work in the low post.

Any takers on that one. I suspect we’ll be trying different combinations there. I wonder if we’ll play to our competition.

I think Gomes probably will on openening day (barring a last minute trade or injury)

but I wouldn’t be surprised if Aminu became the starter midway through the season. Although it would be nice to one starting lineup for once.

I can see...

Chief starting if we fall out of playoff contention and VDN decides he’s going to go into full on development mode. All of this is of course predicated on the fact that he doesn’t get injured in some freak accident prior to the season.

But, of course, I hope that he isn’t starting because it could mean we are playing some competitive ball and they are going with a more veteran starting 5. Would REALLY like to see some competitive ball next season…

So are we definately sticking with the same training staff that has presided over years and years of “freak” injuries, slow recovery times and out of shape players? Thats a question that I’d like answered not listed above….

My guess

is the team signed Powell to a 10 year guaranteed contract awhile back and the team rather have him around then pay for a new training staff.

No way VDN goes into developmental mode...

This is a one year test for Baron Davis and Vinny the Mook. If they fail to go .500 or close to it, Baron’s gone… Vinny might talk fast enough to spare himself but I doubt it. These two guys are in pass-fail mode from day one.
If I look in my crystal ball I occasionally see a third noose for Neil Olshey but it fades in and out. He saved big Don a lot of cash this year and Mister Sterling appreciates the favor.

by John Raffo on Jul 28, 2010 8:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Does Olshey have...

aspirations to coach ala Kiki Vandeweghe? If so, he may be setting VDN up for failure while getting in DTS’ good-side, simply to fire VDN and coach the team himself?

Ridiculous? yes. But when you’re talking about the Clips, anything weird is in play…

Is VDN from the same MDsr mentality when it comes to matchups? i.e. starters, esp the 3, will depend on how the clips match up to the opponents?

Chris Kaman and Deandre Jordan are our only C

We need a back up C other than DJ or at least a big PF, with some legit size like 6’10… we seem undersized down low after our starters.

His response:

I am guessing that is sarcasm

also all FA’s can sign for the same base low, and I doubt Cook was the only FA that was willing to take the minimum.

Not Resigned

So who hasn’t been resigned and not rejoining the team for the 2010-2011 Season?

by lovinglosangeles on Jul 28, 2010 2:37 PM PDT reply actions

Starting at the 3

I wonder if we would be in the same situation last year.

Start the athletic “scorer” Gomes or AFA

realize it doesn’t fit with Kaman, (Camby) Griffin, Gordon, Baron

they need a floor spreader

enter Rasaul Butler

……..
My guess is that as long as Gomes shows he can knock down the 3point shot consistently then he will start. AFA could also start if he develops a good shot behind the arc.

Last years starts shows that floor spreader at the 3 is better than an another athletic scorer as the 5th option.

by Michael White on Jul 28, 2010 4:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Or even...

if he just TOOK better shots. I’m not gonna eat a guys lunch for having a bad day, but when you’re jacking up prayers with plenty of time left on the clock, you’re working with one hand tied behind your back to begin with.

That point is compounded by the fact that we have a C who doesn’t realize he’s 7 feet tall so he hangs out outside the paint waiting to take a fall away 20-footer instead of staying in the paint and collecting the myriad missed shots by Sool and BD

by Dow Jones on Jul 28, 2010 4:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Totally dsagree

if you saw some of the horrible lineups the Clips had at the end of the Yr, R Butler was seriously the 2nd option on offense. Some of those shots had to be taken….otherwise a Bobby Brown or D Jordan would be taking the shot.

As far as your Criticism of Kaman, last yr was clearly his best yr, and the development of his mid-range jumper was crucial. Did he take a few bad shots? Yes, but again, the lack of scoring options at the end of the season necessitated said bad shots. Overall, I think Kaman has developed into the very good but not great Center the fans envisioned when he was drafted. I’m not sure what expectations you had/have of Kaman, but he’s definitely more of a scoring Center than a pure defensive Center. His value is in his scoring.

This is going to be my team, and we're going to rise together.

I see your points...

and respect them. But there are plenty of guys in the league who are “the Man” in their lineup, whether its 1st, 2nd or 3rd unit who still look to create some sort of a high percentage shot. Sool would step back and jack a 30 footer with a solid 15 seconds left on the clock WAY too many times last year IMO. He has some touch so maybe VDN can get his shot IQ up a little bit.

As for Kaman, I agree his value is offense but then BG needs to be an absolute defensive stud. Camby was that guy but he was dumped for what we now know was nothing. If Kaman cannot/will not play D, it puts a heck of a lot of pressure on our “rookie” PF to pull down 10-15 rebounds / game. And that, at least IMO, makes him less valuable than a Camby for instance…

"...so he hangs out outside the paint waiting to take a fall away 20-footer instead of staying in the paint and collecting the myriad missed shots by Sool and BD"

No worries, Blake will surely go for those.

“if he just TOOK better shots. . …but when you’re jacking up prayers with plenty of time left on the clock, you’re working with one hand tied behind your back to begin with.”

So I’m guessing he won’t be “playing the right way”, so that means Del Negro will have somebody on the floor who does.

I like Kaman's game...

I hope he gets to hack up a few 3’s in-game before his career is over. Only thing i wish he would improve is his handle….or maybe just dribble less.

My logic is, if you can hit the 20 footer, why dribble into a double team without the intent of finding the open man?
