USA Baketball
Since our local baseball teams days are numbered. I have turned my attention to football and the upcoming NBA season. I have the NBA channel on direc TV and they have been showing some awsome classic games from the 1980's. One of the many things I noticed was how much more physical and skilled the players back then were. I was watching the celtics v. the bad boys of Detriot and man, these guys were in a MMA match. In todays game most of the plays would be called a foul. I also noticed how a SG like Dumars would not miss a mid range jump shot. After watching USA get passed Spain, I think to myself were has the fundalmentals gone? Are they letting these players come in to young? Do our players need more than 1 year of college to understand the game more. I just see the other countries teams competing with us because they are better educated in the game and controlled. We just win on talent. it is almost embarrsing to see our players just want to dunk or shoot 3's (in which they miss) and turn the ball over and then complain to the refs. In other points?

i like the int'l play because i am reminded exactly of the times you state!
body and hand checks allowed…that was the nba at its bests!…nowadays the casual fan (not any of us citizens!) is more interested in dazzle, trick shots, and loudmouths than the basics you speak of…FSN had lakers vs sixers on last night…that was fun to watch!
Roger Sterling: To my knees, Don. They're bringing to my knees!"
Derek Harper for the Knicks was an awesome defensive guard during those days
He knew how to turn hand checks into steals
it's a cominbation of a lot of things
It seems Europeans approach the game and coach it in a much more fundamental manner. Look at Spain: not a single guy who is more athletic than a Team USA guy, but they will play us to the last second every game because they do the fundamentals such as shoot, move the ball, play D, and rebound. Also the European league is much less Super star focused, thus no need for cheap fouls or Superstar calls. For comparison, I think Linas Kleiza led his league in scoring last year at like 17 points a game. Also the NBA cracked down on fouls because the Heat and Knicks in the 90’s kept killing teams and no one was scoring and ratings were down. European teams could care less about ratings.
