The Minny Pick

While the Clippers FO ponders whether or not to make a deal for Carmelo Anthony, many fans here have been creating their own potential trades for the talented forward. Most of these trades include center Chris Kaman, forward Al-Farouq Aminu, and the rights to the T'wolves unprotected 2012 draft pick, however, I wonder if we are undervaluing the Minny Pick.

Since hiring GM David Kahn 2009, the T'wolves FO have made a number of questionable decisions starting in the 2009 NBA draft where they drafted three point guards, shortly after trading Ty Lawson to Denver for a future draft pick. This past offseason, the team drafted SF Wesly Johnson which is odd considering they already have a talented SF in Corey Brewer and that both players can't create their own shot. This is especially confusing because they passed up on the talented headcase Demarcus Cousins and opted to resign center Darko Milicic while trading for another talented but troubled player in Michael Beasley. They made another strange move when they traded star Al Jefferson, who, just two seasons ago averaged 23 points and 11 rebounds, for two future draft picks from the Utah Jazz. They have loads of cap space, but they will have a hard time convincing top free agents to come to Minnesota. The best use of that space would probably be for a salary dump for a multi-year contract.

Kahn claims to be building for the future, for when Ricky Rubio joins the team, however, Rubio may not come to the US until the 2012 -2013 season, as explained here:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/columns/story?columnist=sheridan_chris&page=Rubio-090902

If this is the case, the T'wolves will spend the next two seasons without Rubio. As of now, Minnesota has one of the worst teams in the NBA. If they don't draft an instant impact player in the 2011 draft or aquire a major player through a trade, they may be one of the worst teams in the league in 2012.

Many have floated the idea of a Kaman, Aminu, and Minny pick trade for Melo. What would the Minny pick have to be in 2012 for you to pull it off the table? Neil Olshey seems like a talented GM and he claims that his best skill is finding players through the draft.

Carmelo is a star but is he worth Chris Kaman, Al-Farouq Aminu, and the Minny Pick? I don't think so.

Who cares? We're talking about Carmelo friggin' Anthony!

Why wait until 2012? They got a lot of good young players and a coach who will steer them in the right direction. Last year was a exploratory year for the Wolves, and they obviously had no need for Big Al (an injury prone player, anyways) having Love, Darko and now Beasley (not a bad front court and all under 25 years old). Look at OKC. I know, OKC has arguably the 4th best player in the NBA (behind LeBron, Kobe and Wade) in Durant, and the Wolves don’t have a guy like that, but, who knows, maybe Beasley becomes that guy now that this T-Wolves team is literally his team!
So, you take that Minny pick and package it with Kaman and Aminu and you go after Melo full force!
If anything could stop a trade like that it would be the Nuggets FO realizing that the Clippers are actually one of their nemesis teams (the other one is the Lakers), but we’re talking about an All Star plus a potential good SF and a building block for the future for Denver for a guy who, let’s face it, is ready to move on and leave that city, and fits this Clippers squad perfectly.
Don’t give me that crap that Melo would push back the development of our young players, because if JR Smith can score by the drones and Nene can go crazy with the boards and blocks and points, then imagine Gordon shooting lights out and Griffin abusing in the paint while Baron simply runs the game with ease and marvels at all these guys doing the dirty work for him a la Chauncey.

Melo or bust!!!

Wolves will be a bottom 3 team

but there’s a good chance 1 or 2 teams move ahead of them anyways. So a 4th or 5th pick seems probable. Since the Clippers will be getting the pick, there will probably be 3 very obvious picks and the 4th pick will be a tricky one that requires lots of scouting… ruh roh.

If we're waiting to assume whether or not things turn out 2 years down the line..

Let another team take that chance. While I don’t necessarily think the Clippers will be in play for Carmelo (call it pessimism), the pick in question should be traded then if its value is so high. The longer the Clippers wait in between bringing in impact players (in this case another 2 years before that pick is cashed in), then the Clippers by then will have EJ and BG’s contracts to start worrying about, as well as other positions that we honestly don’t know how will turn out.

I don’t advocate necessarily selling out the future for the present, but there is a reason and point to bring talent together within a certain time range. Hedge your bets and sell that pick at its “high” value and cash in on a for sue contributer at the SF position (if the trade opportunity were available).

2012 Minny Pick is the best trade chip any team has to offer...

with maybe the exception of Griffin or Lopez of the Nets and I don’t think either of them are available. The reason people are discussing the Clippers as a option is because we have the Minny pick. If its not on the table then I think Denver looks elsewhere.
Also I don’t know if the “his wife wants to be an actress so he’d want to go to LA” is really that great of a selling point to Melo. Isn’t the stank that is DTS greater then any “why wouldn’t he want to play in LA?” line?
Does Melo really want to sign an extension with Sterling? Have we heard anything that indicates he’d be willing to do this?

if we can get melo and not give up blake or ej,

I don’t care if it turns out to be a 1st overall pick. I’d trade it. Baron, ej, melo, and blake? Damn- you could slot me at the 5 spot and we’d win 50 games (slight exaggeration- more like 45-46)

Bear in mind...

You can always put some protection on the pick also…. top 3 protected in 2012, top 2 protected in 2013, something like that… if losing out on another first overall is a showstopper. It would still be better than what other teams have to offer, I think.

We should make all efforts to keep that Minny Pick

If not, than I say Kaman and Minny pick (no AFA). Otherwise I’d prefer to try and sell Kaman, AFA plus a future first rounder (not minny). It might be far off in future given the amount of firsts we owe, but I’ll take Kaman, and two top 10 pics over one melo any day.

Just to be clear

Can we trade the Minnesota pick?

Here is a small transcript from Salary Cap Expert Larry Coon-

In response to:

“Can #knicks trade #warriors 2nd rd picks in 2011+2012 and their own 1st rd picks in 2014+2016 for carmelo?”

Larry Coon said on Twitter:

“No. They owe 2011 2nd rounder to LA. 2012-2015, 1st may go to Houston. Can’t make a trade that possibly leaves them w/o a first in two future yrs. @k_fink”

In response to: “if Clips offer Kaman Aminu and Minn 1st rd…is that the best offer the nuggets will get?”

He does say this though: “It’d prob be a very strong offer.”

I am not sure everyone has the clearest idea on what the Clippers traded for Bledsoe though.

One other thing is, if the Clippers trade the Minni pick somehow, would they no longer be able to move one of their own future first round picks because it could possibly be owed to the Thunder?
