Yes, they should.

An All-Star big, a rookie forward taken in the lottery and an unprotected first-round for Carmelo? Can another team beat that offer?

Well, can they?

What if Chicago were to offer Deng? I suppose it would depend on the Nugget’s priorities. But frankly, I don’t see the Nuggets going too far in the playoffs w/o Anthony. They’d be better off diving straight into a youth movement.

This also goes for deals like Vince Carter for Anthony. Why would the Nuggets try to squeeze out one more competitive year, when clearly they’re not competitive enough? Orlando may want to play for the present, but Denver should opt for a fire sale.

ESPN Inside is reporting other possible destinations. NJ might be able to come up with something comparable, but not if Favors is untouchable. I don’t see GS, Minni, Sac, or NO coming up with the goods to make both Denver AND Melo cooperative. Houston kind of worries me, but right now they’re apparently offering just cap relief and draft picks, so we should have the edge there too, at least in Denver’s eyes.

Here’s another possible tact: Denver could try to find an unattractive team that’s nevertheless interested in Melo as a rental. What if Golden State were to lose its mind (wait… it already has) and offer Curry for Melo as a rental? Rather than go to an undesirable (and gutted) destination and then face the new CBA, Carmelo may just cut his losses and agree to an extension w/ Denver. Now THAT would be a Real Man’s game of chicken.

Looking at it all, though, it seems to me that the Clipper’s top competitor is something the article suggests: Denver may just wait Carmelo out, trusting that he’ll eventually prove too uncomfortable with a possible 50% salary cut. What a bunch of FO assholes. Carmelo may just give them the finger then and opt for free agency anyway, like he’s been saying all along. That too would be quite a game of chicken.

I've think Derrick Favors probably IS untouchable...

Not for any reason other than he is the number two pick in the draft. I think there’s a psychological hurdle the Nets would have to get over in order to make him part of a package. (He’s the number two pick! We’re not gonna get ANOTHER number two pick anytime soon, right?) Nevermind that he probably isn’t the number two talent in the draft…
It’s a smaller hurdle for the Clips to include Eric Gordon in a package… and I don’t think anyone really wants that to happen… especially with his current and very visible run on team USA.
Does Chicago have something to throw in with Deng? A draft pick and an expiring?

by John Raffo on Aug 30, 2010 7:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Chicago could throw in Taj

They also seem to have all their 1st rounders for the next several years, plus the Bobcats 2012+ pick (the sort of extended, protected deal like OKL has with our pick).

Deng + Taj + the Bobcats pick is a pretty good offer. But if I were rebuilding, I’d like the Clip’s offer better. Deng’s offer doesn’t expire until after the 2013-14 season.

Favors was drafted 3rd.

Of course...

And that diminishes the psych. hurdle a bit too.

by John Raffo on Aug 31, 2010 12:24 PM PDT up reply actions

You think CHI offering Deng beats that LAC offer?

I don’t at all. They are locking more money up in the SF spot for an inferior player. The point of moving Carmelo is to get peices to build for the future. The Clipper deal works perfectly as its a rookie, a draft pick, and a veteran big in his prime who’s on a reasonable contract. DEN could easily turn around and move Kaman for more peices in their reboot efforts.

Really, if they are going to make another 1 year run, they would just keep Anthony.

Makes alot of sense

Actually, I agree

The Clips offer is better for a team trying rebuild. I hope Denver agrees, too.

Good point on just keeping Anthony, if one more run is what they’re after. Deng would give them a longer future of hanging in contention, but I agree that he’s an inferior talent, so it’s a flawed option. Deng + Taj + the CHA pick might be a middle path, though. That way, Denver gets a couple prospects for Anthony AND they stay competitive. Still, I think Denver would be better off just rebuilding right away.

I’m just trying to think of what we might be competing with.

as long as the unattractive team isnt Minny

imagine if carmelo just went through with it and landed in minny…

imagine what that would do to our beloved “minni pick”….

I think its a win win situation for the clips.

Say we get him for Kaman aminu & pick and he extends were good there and say he
leaves to New jersey we win because another team in the west just became weaker
than us so either way i like it. Where it really gets exciting is we get Melo and in two
years when Baron contract is up so is CP3. IF we become revelant he might want
to come and play with Melo Blake and Gordon. Now thats Club O at its maximum.

As long as he doesn't go to NYC I will be fine

actually...if we get Melo and Melo walks

we lose…

yea Denver gets weaker loosing Carmelo (next season)…but overall can get better because they would have Kaman, Nene, AFA, Bilups…and whoever they can get with the Minni pick + assets from Kenyon Martin + assets from JR Smith

its win all around for Denver

and what happens to the clippers? we lose melo, we lose kaman, we lose afa…holes at C and SF…with an aged BD an our only real future is in eric bledsoe and willie warren

there is no way we become relevant AND melo walks…meaning if melo walks there is no chance CP3 comes to the Clippers

that’s Club Real

extend and trade or no deal

The Clippers will never deal all those assets for a rental. Come on.

I am pretty every trade is dependent on Melo signing an extension

I'm actually worried. No one would deal assets for a rental, but if DEN seriously offers Melo to David Kahn.

That psycho might actually take it.

Ricky Rubio, Love, Wes Johnson. Who knows.

The point is Kahn is a wild card.

we could always resign Brian Skinner to play C for us right?

if we trade Kaman

i’d be much more interested if the Nuggets are willing to trade later on (around trade deadline)

and we can come up with a deal where we can keep kaman…how would that work?
Gomes+Butler+AFA+Warren+Minni pick for Melo

…too much? we would have this depth chart
C: Kaman – DJ
PF: Blake – Smith – Cook
SF: Melo – Blakely
SG: EJ – Foye
PG: Baron – Beldsoe

we’d have to pick up some players…maybe mccants would be an interesting 1 year minimum player to back up melo and ej
return of steve novak maybe?
that gives us 13

Or we could just sign Dampier
