Former Clipper Steve Novak Waived by Mavericaks

The Mavericks waived reserve forward Steve Novak, whose one-year contract would have become fully guaranteed Jan. 10.

Novak, who signed with the Mavericks in September, played in only seven games this season. He averaged 1.6 points and 0.7 rebounds in 2.6 minutes per game.

Reserve forward Brian Cardinal's one-year contract also isn't fully guaranteed until Jan. 10. However, Cardinal has carved out a niche with the Mavericks and has been part of the rotation while Dirk Nowitzki recovers from a sprained right knee.

The release of Novak reduces the Mavs' roster to 14, opening a spot if they want to add a player. The Mavericks still have their full midlevel exception and several trade exceptions, giving them ammunition to add to their bench without giving up a player.
