The College Hoops Thread

Since the NBA and the NBPA...er...trade association (or whatever they're calling themselves) gave us the collective finger, I thought we'd start a college hoops thread to give all the Citizens a heads up when there are big college games on TV.  Tonight is a big night where ESPN's 24 college hoops marathon culminates with:

Star-divide

Duke (6) vs. Michigan State

Florida (8) vs. OSU (3)

Kentucky (2) vs. Kansas (11).

You'll find ESPN's viewer's guide helpful for today's games.  But for NBA purposes, Duke features top freshman guard Austin Rivers (Doc Rivers' son), OSU features Jared Sullinger, and Kentucky features three top prospects in Marquis Teague (Jeff Teague's brother), Anthony Davis (potential #1 overall pick) and Terrence Jones.

Here's a good Yahoo! article breaking down the top college prospects that is an interesting read.

I'm not historically a big college hoops fan, but with so many top freshman going back to school last year, I think it's going to be an incredible year.  I'm particularly interested in seeing how Marquis Teague and Austin Rivers do tonight.  Feel free to leave a comment regarding any other top games as well.

Memphis Tigers

Could definitely be the most exciting college team this season.

They blew-out Belmont today putting up 97 points. Belmont as most know only lost to Duke by one but they had no answer today for Memphis athleticism, quickness and ability.

Its a bit too early too tell how good this Memphis team can become but they definitely already remind me some of Tarkanian’s Running Rebels Final Four teams

Keep an eye on freshman Adonis Thomas. He could turn out to be the best freshman in the NCAA this season. I really like this kid’s game and academic credentials. He already has an NBA body. He finished with 12 in 20 minutes vs Belmont.

Too bad my team (SDSU) did not have a good recruiting season this year.

They did pretty well for next year though.

Austin Rivers

Very talented combo guard but appears to be a “shoot first” guard. Not sure that is what we need. Season is still young to see how he mautres.

He played better against Davidson...

I’m sure he was a superstar in High School, he seems a little big headed. He needs to learn to play in the team concept. Very talented.

I have seen video of him in high school

doing pretty much what he wanted on the court. Go to youtube if you want to see more.
Here he is doing a cross-over move on John Wall and Wall did one later that nite on him.

To tell the truth

Austin Rivers does not look good at all. Yes, he has great athleticism and 1v1 moves, but he doesnt play within the flow of the offense at all.

Marquis Teague is a pass first point guard

I’m sold already!! I want Harrison Barnes and Marquis Teague.

Anthony Davis is a revelation

He’s like a more refined Marcus Camby (I know I’m not the first to make that comparison). I salivate at the thought of a Blake/Davis 4/5 combo.

Draft pick question:

Say there is a season and we somehow stay in the top 10 for the lottery (pray not). Does that mean we would have 2 lottery picks since we’ll have the TWolves unprotected pick, or do the Celtics get the lesser of our 2 picks. I thought the pick we traded to OKC (that they traded to Boston) is top 10 protected, but since we’d obviously have the TWolves pick, does that go away and they get the lesser?

Fire Jasen Powell!

by chrisd on Nov 15, 2011 10:16 PM PST reply actions

Our pick is top 10 protected

So yes, we would have 2 picks. In this case I would try to use the Minny pick for a D-Will or Cp3 trade and use the lesser pick to draft a great role player type. With 2 young stars already, we need some vets (and im not giving up on E-Bled or Aminu quite yet) unless we go crazy and trade EJ/lesser pick for D-Will/another player and then draft Jeremy Lamb to be our SG. . .not my preference but you can see how many options the Clippers have. When all is said and done, i dont think we should keep both picks. One of them should be used to net an allstar.

Oh and...

What the hell happened to UCLA? 0-2 vs. LMU and MTSU? And since when is a Ben Howland team so terrible on defense? something is not right in Westwood.

Also, it could be that the WCC is the best conference in the West this season. It’s early, but so far WCC is 3-1 against Pac-12: LMU over UCLA, Gonzaga over WSU, Pepperdine over ASU – only UW managed to beat Portland. BTW, all of those games except Zags-Cougs were hosted by Pac-12 school.

In this world, you must be oh so smart or oh so pleasant. Well, for years I was smart. I recommend pleasant. - Elwood P. Dowd

by Steve Perrin on Nov 15, 2011 11:38 PM PST reply actions

Cal is DEFINITELY the best team in the Pac-12

The media voted them 2nd in the conference but many of the coaches were pretty clear that they thought Cal was the best team. One head coach said Cal was the best team “by far.”

It’s college and experience matters a lot. Cal has an experienced squad and good balance up and down. And that Mike Montgomery guy can coach pretty well too.

by madglove on Nov 16, 2011 8:45 AM PST up reply actions

What Happened To UCLA

1. Jones is terrible and Anderson is not much better – Last season they had Honeycutt who created a lot of scoring opportunities for himself and his teammates.

2. They have no one who can regularly get to the FT line. Smith does a pretty good job but his minutes are limited

3. No three point shooters

4. The Wear twins – They suck. UICLA dumped Reeves Nelson their best player just like they did a promising Drew Gordon probably because of too many tattoos or something like that.. I know Nelson was only suspended but my guess is he is done playing for Howland. So the Bruins booted their one decent player off the team.

5. They are soft like a child’s cuddly animal.

6. The Wear twins suck. Oh I already said that. However, if you are a Bruins fan you can’t say it enough.

I Noticed

We will see for how long.

Howland may have been pressured into taking him back. Without him the Bruins are really worth watching unless you are a Josh Smith or Tyler Lamb fan.

If only Josh could develop a more Renardo Sydney body without Sydney’s personality.

I'm not a big college hoops guy...

I prefer the more “flashy” NBA style of play, and I think college football is the FAR superior big-time college sport in every category except postseason.

That being said, I’ll be semi-following Boise State basketball as usual this year. We’ve got a big home game tonight against the Runnin’ Utes. If we beat them, I’ll be a little more optimistic about BSU hoops. In Leon we trust!

I’ll spare you the rant about how we shouldn’t have been going for it on fourth down so often all season, etc. but that was a rare bad call by Chris Petersen.

Tens Of Millions Love American Football.

I prefer Aussie Rules football because IMO it is more manly.

I also prefer Canadian Football because IMO it is a more open and exciting game.

American football even American college football is 3 + hours of mostly commercials with a about 40 minutes of huddles and 20 minutes of action out of 180 or so clock minutes. Not for this guy. Too boring.

I knew Utah was an unknown coming into this year but I didn’t think they’d be this bad. We’ve been opening up a can of whoopass on them so far. 49-26, BSU as I’m writing this.

Man Casper Ware...

Def an interesting talent. Clipper Darrell has created a black and gold suit and has been cheering at LBSU games.

Gonna have to check out a couple of games this season.

Not that familiar with the Big West…which games should be good ones?

by madglove on Nov 17, 2011 9:55 AM PST up reply actions

Clipper Darrell

I heard about that. I wonder what his affiliation with LBSU is?

As for games, the Boise State game on Tuesday will be competitive. In conference UCSB on Feb 22 will be huge, Pacific is always a strong team (Jan 14), and Fullerton is our main rival (Jan 28).

Last night was such a huge game for the program. Casper, Larry Anderson, TJ, and Gene are a core that will take this team far. All my friends are saying they are this season’s SDSU. I would not go that far. They will be very competitive and cracking the top 25 and winning a game or two come March would not be a shock.

by drtrix on Nov 17, 2011 1:16 PM PST up reply actions

I know he was getting lots of attention at the Drew-Goodman game at the Pyramid.

He had like 5 or 6 seats and kept moving around the stadium doing his chants. Not sure his affiliation though.

Clipper Darrell went to quite a few Drew League games over the summer

Casper Ware was tearing it up and Darrell ended up becoming a big fan. The coach of LBSU ended up giving Darrell free season tickets if he would come out and cheer for them. I have not seen the suit yet :(

I’ll have to ask my dad, but I think he personally knows Casper Ware Sr., who was a star at Fremont High in the 70’s.

After watching Ware in the Drew League, I’m a fan too. It was great to see him help lead the 49ers to a win against Pitt.

Thanks for the heads up drtrix.

Grantland has a piece on him today from Draft Express which is pretty cool:

LBSU

With no NBA in the near future this team is one that most Clipper fans should find fun to watch. Maybe I am just a biased alum but a local mid-major team with a lot of TV games could be one Citizens could gravitate towards this winter. Clipper Darrell has already made the switch!

Sorry SP, I know you are a WCC man.

Schedule

http://www.longbeachstate.com/sports/m-baskbl/sched/lbst-m-baskbl-sched.html

They will be on a variety of stations. I live up in the Bay Area now so I will not be able to see the games on Prime Ticket or FSN West. But, I do know that ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU will be showing all the games vs ranked teams (Kansas, UNC, Louisville, Diamond Head Classic tournament).

There is also a Big West webTV subscription. I think it is like $10 a month but it gives you access to all Big West games.

He was a guard a couple of years ago before growing 10 inches in a little over a year.

I think he’s being groomed to be a big (4/5), but I take him if I’m Neil Olshey and he’s available. His ability to handle the ball, pass and defend at his height and length is too hard to pass up. We need a small forward like no other, but I would take Davis and worry about the rest later. We’d either have a 4/5 rotation with “ridiculous upside” or a very tall frontcourt. With Gordon and Mo in the backcourt, we have 2 guards that can spread the floor and give the frontcourt room to operate.

I could see this year’s draft very well being another Oden/Durant type comparison as draft season approaches.
