Cory Brewer Signs a Multi-Year With The Mavs Over Several Other Contenders
I guess some teams think he's pretty good.

I know he got hurt
but never lived up to his college hype. He can’t shoot but I thought he would be a lockdown defender coming out of school.
Ah Dallas
Home of only sensible, conservative, smart signings. The last NBA bastion of consistently really carefully considered spending.
Jax doesn’t really think Brewer is any good though, otherwise he would be expressing disappointment the Clippers didn’t get him. Its not like the Clippers are set at SF for the future.
Classic.
Hmm - the article says:
“Brewer, a 6-foot-9, 188-pound swingman who was the seventh overall pick in the 2007 draft, drew interest from about a dozen teams after receiving a buyout from the New York Knicks this week”
A dozen teams. Multi year contract.
Interesting.

Oh
So you are disappointed he isn’t a Clipper then.
Coffee is for closers Olshey.
You are really adding alot to this website
Thanks for your input.

I mean normally
Folks use this space to talk about players the Clippers should get or could get, etc.
I’m just trying to figure out what you are trying to say here. Should the Clippers have gotten Brewer? It would be interesting because despite the rough season it would be your first time expressing discontent with Olshey’s performance.
I’m just trying to figure out the Clippers angle here.
Or are you just here to talk about me?
Nah
he’s just here to annoy. He had to post about Childress as well. For a guy who loves living on idle speculation he sure loves ignoring facts (like the guy the Clippers actually did sign, Ryan Gomes, sucks tremendously).

An NBA version of Trading Places
In the name of science and statistics, I’ll be interested in how Cory does. How much does team context matter? Well, now we get another case study.
My guess is that a winning culture will moderately boost his game. $8M for 3 years isn’t anything outrageous.

Yikes, your right!
OK, so the investment is rather reckless. I’m still interested in the outcome, though.

Maybe he can get under Kobe's skin ala Dahntay Jones in 2009.
We’ll see. Would really like to see how he does outside of the Phantom Zone that is Minnesota.

LOL, right
If anything, Gomes and Foye actually got worse once they left Minnesota.
Oh, and Dahantay Jones really didn’t bother Kobe all that much. Lakers won. Jones is…where?
Do not worry. (Matthew 6:27)
Yeah what happened to Dahntay
If I remember correctly he has a pretty decent season with Indy last season

No such thing
Nobody has ever “stopped” Kobe (other than Kobe), not even Ron Artest or the girl in Eagle, CO..
Do not worry. (Matthew 6:27)
Depends on what you mean stop
the Celtics have done a great job on him. If a guy is going to shoot it that often then he’s going to score some points but if you can hold him to sub 40% shooting then he starts hurting the team.

I meant one person
Yes, the Celtics frustrated the heck out of him in both Finals. There is a good scheme to contain him.
But no one player has “stopped” Kobe. Not Ruben Patterson, not Raja Bell, not Ron Artest, not Dahantay Jones.
Do not worry. (Matthew 6:27)
Battier and Kenyon Martin in their respective series a couple years ago against the Lakers
I remember commentators talking about how Kobe’s % were down.
"Failure is not fatal, but failure to change might be." - John Wooden
Battier came closest
but then the next game Kobe lights him up. Very difficult to guard Kobe.
Do not worry. (Matthew 6:27)
Doesn't make a lot of sense
for the Knicks to buyout Brewer. He was cheap and maybe they could have used him as a sign and trade asset and got a 2nd round pick for him. Worst case just let him walk in a few months.

That was what I said, back in the fanpost a few days ago

Maybe D'Antoni thinks he has no use for non-shooter?
I think it’s weird, too. Oh well.

Most buyouts don’t make sense to me.
I personally can’t stand the buyout culture.

I don't understand the buyout either.

Well
I can understand it if it saves the team money and they are already out of the playoffs. If you are going to just let them rot on the bench (like Sool) might as well save a few bucks. But in the Knicks case they just traded a bunch of starters and rotation players and you’d think Brewer would get some PT as a backup to Melo and Landry. Considering its a prorated rookie salary deal the savings aren’t that much for a playoff bound team.

Yah I agree with that - I'd have kept the guy

well
The clips wouldn’t be any better with brewer in place of gomes (if that’s what this fanshot is kinda somehow implying?). Someone that one-sided is a better fit for a contender who may or may not need those skills in certain situations (but want him on the team just in case).
I think that’s what Dallas was goin for, but aren’t they in the luxury tax penalty now? Ouch.

Question for the amateur capologists out there
How is it that they are allowed to sign him if they are already waaaaay over the cap and don’t have Bird rights? Do the rules that apply to signing free agents in the offseason not apply to signing players waived during the season, or is there some sort of exemption at work here?

Could they still have their Bi-Annual Exception?
That’s usually in the 2m dollar range, did they sign to that for 3 years?

Mid-Level Exception
The Mavs were over the cap at the end of last year so the had the mid-level exception. They didn’t use it this year yet so they were able to use a portion of it to sign Brewer.
http://www.sbnation.com/nba/2011/3/3/2028274/corey-brewer-signs-mavericks
Corey Brewer has signed a three-year contract with the Dallas Mavericks, the team announced on Thursday. The Dallas Morning News reports that the deal is worth $7 million; the Mavericks were able to sign Brewer, a fourth-year wing, for more than the veteran’s minimum despite being over the salary cap because the team didn’t use its mid-level exception in the offseason.
Thanks
I thought that might be the case, but didn’t see it addressed in any of the articles I read.
