POR/LAC Trade Idea.

There's a glaring trade opportunity I see brewing here.  Needless to say, Crash Wallace is lighting it up in POR.  (Why didn't we get him again?)  Besides Wallace making Batum expendable, the Blazers are lacking a true big man beyond Marcus Camby.  While I love having a big man rotation of Blake, DJ, and Kaman there are 2 problems.  1) DJ needs to be starting.  2) Kaman is injury prone.

I'd love to see Kaman, and a pick if need be, traded for Camby and Batum.

Batum solves our woes at the three with a lock-down defender who can shoot the 3 and who is also young enough to join our core.  Camby, already coming off the bench, should have no problem backing up DJ and is/was a fan favorite.

I just hope POR doesn't realize Kaman is now more pick and pop than he is a defensive big man, but he's still seven feet tall.

Neil seems savvy, and it's looking less and less likely we settle for a Prince or a Battier who, while effective, are too old to fit you EJ and Blake.

I’d rather keep Kaman and then sign-and-trade Jordan this offseason if possible. Kaman fits what we need more out of our center position in order to create space for Blake.

Honestly.

On paper Kaman seems like a good fit. But in reality he is taking touches and rebounds away from Blake. DJ posted 9 and 8 off the bench. He should be starting.

I hope he’s taking rebounds away from Blake. And touches too. Kaman should be getting those. If he wasn’t, then we’d have a problem. Kaman has a jumper, something Jordan does not. Kaman has the ability to finish around the rim without dunking, something Jordan does not. Kaman has the ability to keep opposing centers out of the lane, something Jordan does not. Have you ever realized how clogged the paint gets with Jordan in there? Kaman gets a ton of open looks around the free throw line for jumpers because of the spacing on the floor. That’s a great thing. We need more of that.

Touches

You probably don’t want Kaman taking shots away from Griffin. Kaman’s TS% < Griffin’s (though a lot of that was from the shit show we saw from Kaman before he got hurt.)

But I don’t get the rebouding complaint. What do we care who gets the rebounds? And why is Kaman getting reboudns a bad thing yet Jordan getting rebounds a good thing? Team rebounds are a good thing. Until those two start boxing each other out in an attempt to get a rebound and it goes out of bounds, I don’t see the problem.

by Michael White on Mar 31, 2011 1:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Kaman is shooting 45% on 10-to-23 foot jumpers. That’s good for a center. On the season, DeAndre Jordan has taken just 6 of those and missed all of them. I like the way Kaman spaces the floor with Blake. He allows Blake room to operate and get his points. On those same jumpers this season, Blake Griffin is shooting 33%. That’s not good. That’s pretty bad. Blake has to play primarily around the rim, which is why his TS% is better than Kaman’s. We need Kaman to stretch the floor with his jumper in order to give Blake room to do what he needs to do.

terrible for a center

An nba center is suppose to average over 50% fg percentage. Kaman’s shot is also unreliable he has always been a poor efficiency center and seems in games his shot goes away as the game goes on. Let’s not even get into the effort department with Kaman. Kaman opens the floor for himself because teams still double and triple Blake when they play together.

by KillaClip on Apr 1, 2011 11:19 AM PDT via mobile up reply actions

Kaman is shooting 45% on jumpers. That’s a crazy mark for a center. Kaman has 164 attempts on 10-to-23 foot jumpers this season. There’s only one other qualified center with as many attempts as Kaman that’s shooting a higher percentage on those same jumpers this season. That guy is Al Horford. Horford is at 52%. In fact, the only reason Kaman’s field goal percentage isn’t above 50% is because he isn’t finishing in the 3-to-9 foot area. He’s shooting just 31% in that range. He’s at 62% around the rim, though. He’s just not finishing in that 3-to-9 foot area. He’ll improve there, though. He’s down 20% from last year’s mark in that range. It’s just a down year for him in that department.

As for Kaman being a poor efficiency rebounder, that’s just not true. Do you think DeAndre Jordan is a poor efficiency rebounder? The reason I ask is because Jordan’s TRR this season is 16.2 while Kaman’s is at 15.6. Neither of these guys will be mistaken for Dwight Howard, Tyson Chandler, Joakim Noah, Andrew Bynum, or Andrew Bogut. They’re also not Brook Lopez, Andrea Bargnani, Channing Frye, Marc Gasol, or Nene. They’re solid rebounders for their position.

I’ll admit, I wanted to trade Kaman a few months ago but he fits this team’s offensive mindset better than Jordan does. If a team is willing to sign-and-trade for Jordan then I’d do it. Especially if they offer a draft pick.

Twitter: @FlyByKnite

by FlyByKnight on Apr 1, 2011 2:47 PM PDT up reply actions

I should mention that Kaman is 23-of-74 in that 3-to-9 foot area. If he had made just 10 of the 51 baskets that he missed, Kaman would have been shooting 44.6% in that area. That would have raised his field goal percentage to 49.7% on the season. If he makes 15 of the 51 baskets that he missed, he moves up to 51.35% in that area and 51.14% on the season. So, it’s all a matter of him finishing in that part of the floor. That’s all it is. It’s not like he sucks.

who cares if he takes rebounds away from blake

all that means is that we still get the ball. There has been times where Kaman has come off the bench to get a double-double so how does 9 and 8 off the bench trump that? I love DJ but he is still inconsistent. Blake may get less touches but they are quality touches around the rim rather than mid range jumpers.

Sure, I'm down

POR wouldn’t do it though.

I do think Portland would take a look at a trade for Kaman, though and with Wallace in they have moved Batum to the bench, but this seems like far too much for Portland to pay. Also, Wallace expires next year as does Kaman. I’m not sure the contract of Batum, but this trade seems like it’s good for one year only. You’d probably have to throw in the Minny pick at least because I know the Portland fans are fanatical about Batum.

by Michael White on Mar 31, 2011 11:18 AM PDT reply actions

I don't think the L values Camby like they should, though

Portland certainly loves Batum, but their love for him may be dwindling out of the current excitement for Gerald Wallace. This isn’t an entirely unlikely scenario, I think.

I agree.

Wallace is electrifying that team right now. If they have some playoff success and Wallace shines, I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility that they cash in Batum for something they legitimately need: a starting center. Camby is 38, beyond him who do they have??

Like I said, maybe a first round pick sweetens the deal. We can send them our 2013 after the draft or something along those lines.

the battle of over-value

Batum still starts for Por while Wallace plays the 4 in starting the last 9 games after coming off the bench for his first 8 with Por. In playing both Wallace and L.A. out of position while having Camby come off the bench says they must think quite a bit of Batum or that camby is not at the level he was during his clipper tenure. I gotta think if Neal was willing to trade Kaman he would not see this as enough value, especially if the clips were asked to throw in any kind of 1st round draft pick.

I would like a Batum..but I think Kaman is still valuable to the team.

Kaman gives the team offense and some boards. I think he and Jordan are a good mix. Offense and defense. This is not the age of the centers like in the past…Kaman is a skilled big man..that is always valuable.

This trade

Even if this particular trade may not work, I think the idea is the right one. If you want to move Kaman, you need to realize that you need a starting SF and a backup center.

BATTIER!

The Clippers need a defender and Ron Artest is taken. Shane is the only person in the league I can think of that can defend and fill our “Zombied” 3 spot. We dont need a scorer nor ball handler to take the ball away from Blake or EJ. Filling the 3 with a defender would be perfect. That would help us stop scorers like “the Black Dumba”, Lebron, Melo, etc.

I say Defender for our Clippers.

I would say

Battier is a lock to go to a elite contender on a discount deal. Little chance he spends the last few remaining years of his career playing for a team that would have to battle hard just to make the playoffs. And his age (33 on opening night) means the Clips will be looking for a replacement almost right away.

Totally Agree but No Way

Portland is not moving Batum for a paper only player in Kaman. DJ sets the tone, Kaman continually makes shots and rebounds when they are not necessary but continually takes bad shots and rebounds when the game doent matter. DJ needs to be starting

by PJHDCLIPPER on Mar 31, 2011 2:46 PM PDT reply actions

Great trade except

The Clips would love to get Batum to fill the SF role. And, Portland would be crazy to let him go. He’s under contract for two more seasons and he’s a bargain. The downside is that the Clips would find themselves in the position of having to offer big contracts to EJ and Batum at the same time. Both are on schedule to become unrestricted agents after the 2012-2013 season. It’s easier if a team doesn’t have to re-sign more than one key player per year.

Of course, the great unknown is what the new CBA looks like. I just have to think that it will be much more restrictive on exceeding cap.

by Mike Wr on Mar 31, 2011 2:59 PM PDT reply actions

EJ extension would go a long way in establishing credibitlity...

But if we weren’t the damn Clippers we could pull a Westbrook, hold off on extending EJ, and then sign or trade for a legit FA. That way, EJ’s bigger deal wouldn’t count against the cap until next year, where we could then go over and sign him to his deal.

Growing pains. We go that route, we’re cheap. OKC does it and Presti is a genius.

Batum

Everyone knows Portland (and practically the rest of the NBA) is really high on Batum, but I just cannot see why. I think his ceiling is a better version of Trevor Ariza – which is good, just not great. If I remember correctly, Portland was initially a potential trade partner in the Carmelo bonanza, but dropped out when they steadfastly refused to include Batum. He’s practically untouchable and I highly doubt Portland would even think of doing this trade. Perhaps someone can tell me what they think of Batum and how good he might be… cause I just don’t see it.

Personally, I think we already have our own version of Batum in Aminu. The kid is incredibly raw, but he’s shown glimpses (however rare it may be) of what he can do once he has more experience under his belt.

If we’re going to poach an SF from Memphis, it’s not Battier that I want.. it’s Tony Allen. He’s one of the best one-on-one defenders at the 3 position, strong enough to hold his own against the likes of Carmelo and Lebron, and also quick enough for a couple of steals a game. I just don’t know if Memphis would be willing to deal him.

by Rob Lo on Mar 31, 2011 3:54 PM PDT reply actions

I doubt Tony Allen would be available. He’s been the most sneaky great free agent acquisition of the year and he’s really shined since being in the starting lineup.

From Memphis (via trade) I believe the only guy available will be Mayo.

QFT

Tony Allen has learned to make layups (ahem Kaman) and has my vote for MIP. He is unequivocally the best wing defender in the league. Watching him chase around Durant is a real treat. And let’s not forget his Oakley-esque tough-guy persona (controlled nutjob).

Tony Allen’s defense seems to have rubbed off on Mayo too. Punched him awake, or something. Cuz suddenly Mayo’s defense has improved by a butt-load. If Mayo can accept a less offensive role, he’s a great target to buy low on.

If I remember correctly

Based on my memory and the eye test, he rebounds, scores efficiently, spreads the floor, plays great individual and help defense, and unselfish. Not unlike Tayshaun Prince, only much younger.

Now let’s look at it statistically. From basketball-reference.com, it looks like his reputation as an efficient scorer is based on the 09-10 season, not the 10-11 season. However, even in a “slump year,” he’s nearly as efficient as EJ. He’s an average rebounder, at best. He rarely gets assists, but he also rarely turns the ball over. PER seems average (was above last year, dipped below this year). Decent enough defender (statistically), but nothing to write home about. That being said, I still think he plays good defense and forces low percentage shots. His win-shares are above average no matter when you look at them.

If one assumes there’ll be development, he’s right around the level of Gordon (less scoring, more all-around), and both would be very solid pieces to a team built around Griffin. If we could somehow fleece NJ out of DWill, I think a lineup of DWill, Gordon, Batum, Griffin, Jordan goes to the WCF.

I agree that Gordon's potential surpasses Batum's

I have my doubts that Batum will really get any better than he is right now, while Gordon really has a few tweaks he needs to work out to become a truly dominant scorer. Many of those tweaks he seemed to have figured out earlier in the year, but with the wrist injury they seem to be back (which would make perfect sense with a wrist injury).

Statistically, though, Gordon’s only marginally better than Batum this year, and Batum was better than Gordon last year. Statistically.

Hmmm...

My gut would say no, since I really like what Gallinari brings to the table, based on what I’ve seen. But it also seems like Batum’s a better defender (though that may or may not be true, since I have seen only a handful of games from both players).

The stats say Gallo’s a more efficient scorer (because he gets to the line a lot more), but otherwise there’s not a whole lot different about them statistically.

So to answer your question, no, I’d go with Gallinari for size, to offset the smaller Gordon. (I wouldn’t ever give up Gordon for either of those guys, though, not that you asked.)

Oooh

With what NewCavsFan said below, I wonder which player would require a bigger paycheck in the future? That would make all the difference in the world. I’m thinking, based on hype, that Batum might be the more expensive guy.

Also, there’s the question of who is more expendable to their respective teams. Denver has a lot of talent… Between Felton, Lawson, Afflalo, JR Smith, Chandler, and Gallinari, they’re deep at all three of the PG, SG, and SF positions. Smith or Afflalo can both play SF (when size allows it), and Karl loves playing Felton and Lawson together. They’ve had health issues, so no one’s been the odd man out yet, but I wonder if by the end of the playoffs, any one of those guys will become tradeable?

I'm suspecting

that Gallinari will be the odd man out. Management wanted to trade him right away after the Carmelo bonanza, so that says a lot about how they feel regarding his potential.

Yep

Chandler has been a great fit for them

Yes, I feel that way, too.

And what DEN DOESN’T need more of is offense. I bet we could pry Gallo away with a regular First Rounder…but so could anyone else in the league.

Batum isnt the 2nd coming of LBJ or any other random great SF

But he is exactly what this team needs. He makes his shots, especially 3s, is a decent rebounder, a VERY good defender, and is still quite young.

The only thing that Moon and Aminu have over him is athleticism, and Gomes is not better at anything.

The issue, of course, would be monetary in resigning him, but again, after the CBA, who knows?

Batum’s defense is overrated, especially this season.

Synergy’s top 5 worst defenders (min. 300 plays): J.R. Smith, Ramon Sessions, Daniel Gibson, Marco Belinelli, Nic Batum.

As of February 22nd, Batum was allowing 1.06 points per possession on defense. That was worst among qualified SF’s.

i do really like batum

not sure about for Kaman though. Sure camby can still be productive, but for how much longer? I’m curious what they’re going to do with Oden, will they give him an extension? Will he play for the QO? If Jasen Powell got his hands on Oden though, I’d be scared for his life.

Definitely seems like Batum might be expendable to PDX now that they have wallace. They might look ahead a few years, and realize that they probably can’t pay Batum his market value when they still have Wallace under contract. Maybe they’d let him go for just the Minny pick? Not sure I’d do that, but maybe I try and get at least Batum, Rudy, and their 1st rounder (since Clips technically can’t trade the Minny pick without getting a pick back) for the minny pick.
