Blake and Kyrie

(or maybe Williams…he could have fit our void SF spot…)

Not really Mo's fault. He's like the product of infidelity. A tangible reminder, but he didn't ask to be here.

Blame Baron for not living up to the expectations or being in the proper shape.
Blame Brand for convincing Baron to sign with us.
Blame Dunleavy for signing Baron.
Blame Olshey for signing off on the trade of Baron to the Cavs.
Blame Bledsoe for being the reason that we couldn’t have protected the pick.
Blame Sterling just for being Sterling and being a black eye that scares off potential FA’s.

My head is pounding :(

i dont blame Baron

yes he was expected to be the star of the team…but he also didnt have a good cast near him…until Blake and it was clear that Blake motivated him and we had the Baron we needed…not necessarily the one we wanted…but the one we needed at the time

other than that…I blame Olshey for signing off on the trade and Sterling for being Sterling
also its not Bledsoes fault for not protecting the pick…isnt that Olshey call?

other than drafting Bledsoe….what good has Olshey done?
Aminu? okay but that was almost a given
Bledsoe…good
Sign Gomes? fail
Sign Foye….eh
Sign Cook? not bad but not needed either
Trade Baron…originally to be determined…now a fail

It's a combination of things that have contributed to the trade being made which led to the Cavs having the number 1 pick.

I don’t blame all of the parties involved either, but if you want to hate/blame someone (such as Mo), then you need to look at all the contributing factors to even get us to this point. It’s a big puzzle and he is only a piece of it.

Hindsight is 20/20. Trade really sucks in retrospect, but the reasoning for the trade was legit.

The ball just happened to not bounce our way (or it did depending on how you look at it).

As the lottery played out (top 3), I was hoping that the Cavs would have had a higher pick than the Wolves. I wish the Wolves would have been 3, but I’d rather them have Williams than Irving.

For us, it all depends what we do with the money that was saved. It could very well end up not working out for us, or it could put us in a great position where the trade doesn’t sting that much. I’m still hopeful.

We gave away the number 1 pick in the draft for Mo Freakin Williams.

All I know is that we better use that extra cap space from this deal to acquire another star player.

i dont remember him directly saying the trade would help in any other area

by KidJustin on May 17, 2011 6:50 PM PDT up reply actions

We could re-sign them both and be fine financially. We have bird rights.

Trading away Baron saved $11.65M over 2 years (6.25M in 2012) plus the rookie salary of our 2011 draft pick (which if it were the 1st, would be another $5M or so per year). We have the space to retain our own guys and still be players for some of the available free-agents. If we didn’t spend it all this summer, then next summer we would be in a good position to have the mony available to pay Dwight, Deron or Paul. Kaman, Foye and Cook are about $18M in expirings next season. So having money to re-sign Gordon and DJ was not really an issue unless the owner didn’t want to spend in the first place, which is usually the case with Sterling.

Proud member of Club FTR

by Lawler 4ever on May 17, 2011 7:05 PM PDT up reply actions

no we didn't

we trade a pick that ended having about 2% of a chance to get Mo Williams and get rid of Baron contract, anyway the situation would have change have we keep the pick for the simple reason that games would have been played with baron maybe we ended better or worse. Anyway if you take an open shot and the ball doesn’t go in, it was still the right shot.

the notion of "we traded away a #1 pick" is idiotic

When we traded it away, it was a #1 pick, it was also a #8 pick. It a lotto, it’s like getting mad because somebody used your dollar you gave them, that they took out of they’re wallet of multiple dollars that were never yours.

That was from White Men Can't Jump. :)

It sucks, but we still have a nice nucleus to work with. We still have to make some moves. Olshey is new to having total control. So, we really only have 1 1/2 years to judge him on. So there’s a lot of uncertainty. We can hope for the best, but it’s different than a Laker, Cetlic, Spur or Bull fan, etc. having faith that their FO will make the right moves.

I’m not ready to completely right Olshey off. I like the way that he’s drafted, but I want to see him pull off some power moves that really propel us into becoming a perennial playoff team. That can take time, or it could happen overnight. I just hope it happens.

@foryourhandicap

by uclatroy on May 17, 2011 7:28 PM PDT reply actions

We didn't trade Kyrie Irving and Baron Davis for Mo Williams

We went .500 with Williams. If we had Davis instead of Williams, and he missed 7/22 games (like he did with the Cavs), we’d have lost a few more games, fell below Detroit in the standings, and ended up with the 7th worst record (and the 8th pick b/c Detroit, now in 8th, would have jumped ahead of us).

Another thing to point out is that, because of the pick we sent to OKC for Bledsoe (now owed to Boston), we couldn’t protect the pick we sent to Cleveland.

by d2s4ui1 on May 17, 2011 7:28 PM PDT reply actions

Good point

Very highly unlikely that fate falls the same way had we not traded the pick.

by Jonee on May 17, 2011 7:32 PM PDT up reply actions

What the future holds..

As indicated above what played out tonight would probably not have happened to the Clippers if the trade didn’t happen. But the media will always say that Irving is the player the Clips traded away. Its just something were going to have to live with as Clippers fans. If the Clippers are winning or Irving isn’t great it won’t be a big deal.
The real comparision to watch will be Mo vs. Baron. Over the next 3 years Mo has to be better then Baron. Or the Clips have to get something decent in a trade with Mo included.
And the “cap space”. The new CBA will probably significantly lower the cap. Meaning that any space the Clippers have will likely be gone. Therefore, they probably have to make a trade before July 1st. Use the current space to eat some salary from another team in a trade.

by Beasel on May 17, 2011 7:55 PM PDT reply actions

Let's just hope Mo was worth it

If he leads the Clips to the playoffs next year, then maybe the trade would have been worth it, we don’t know. Hopefully whatever 2nd round pick the Clips get pans out and the CLips get lucky in 2012. You can never get enough young talent. Look at OKC and Memphis. Let’s just hope AFA develops….Derek Williams would have been a potential “solution” to the SF woes. OH well.

This is going to be my team, and we're going to rise together.

by RAR on May 17, 2011 8:47 PM PDT reply actions

Exactly

Who the hell would take Baron’s contract if the pick were protected? Get real, Simmons.

by yaggiefresh on May 17, 2011 9:08 PM PDT up reply actions

why not

there was a very small risk in giving the pick, you can’t make trades assuming the worst would happen. The FO consider moving Baron and giving the pick in such a weak draft was the right call IMO.

by XXDC2XX on May 17, 2011 9:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Cavs got better player and the #1 pick.

We got some cap room, which history has shown will go mostly unused, and a shoot-first point guard. Of course, most assume that trading the pick wouldn’t result in a top-3 pick, much less the #1 pick. However, the possibility did exist. We could have traded the pick and Baron after the lottery.

I can imagine the FO rationalizing tomorrow that this is good news, since the #1 pick would have been a 4-5 million dollar hit on our cap. Nevermind that we could have had an epic team with Irving in 2 years AND still been a player in free agency and the trading world.

by RAR on May 17, 2011 9:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Over at Canis Hoopus, they arent too crazy about another tweener in Derrick WIlliams

But a good portion seem to want BPA.

However, the majority consensus is trading the pick and somebody else for a veteran big and a lower draft pick, to a team that would really want Derrick Williams.

I think the Clippers could actually deal Kaman straight up for the #2 pick, and might even get something back as well.

by NewCavsfan on May 17, 2011 9:24 PM PDT up reply actions

Don’t see why the Clippers would want the pick, though.

@foryourhandicap

by uclatroy on May 17, 2011 9:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Derrick Williams really reminds me of Marcus Fizer

Got hot at the right time. And there’s no way the Clippers are trading Kaman for a pick. The team needs a 3 and more consistent shooters.

by yaggiefresh on May 17, 2011 9:41 PM PDT up reply actions

Poor comparison IMO.

Fizer was an undersized bloated 4 man who simply overpowered people in college. Much more difficult to do that in the NBA. He was similar to a Corliss Williamson.

DWilliams is a super athletic 3 man who can shoot, nothing like Fizer. Nobody knows if he will be a star or a bust, but I’d put money on the latter, or at least, a very solid player. He would have been a great pick to fill our massive void at 3 for the next decade.

by RAR on May 17, 2011 9:51 PM PDT up reply actions

All I remember was that there was massive hype about Fizer

and about his ability to hit the jumper in college. He ended up becoming a tweener that couldn’t fit anywhere and so far that’s the knock on Williams.

Not hating on the kid, maybe I’m just bitter about what’s happened today.

by yaggiefresh on May 17, 2011 9:53 PM PDT up reply actions

He had that baseline jumper, but mostly overpowered smaller 4s in college.

He was not known for his athleticism – DWilliams is a Big-time athlete.

by RAR on May 17, 2011 10:00 PM PDT up reply actions

I don’t see D Williams being a star in the pros..but could be a solid player. He would have been a nice player on our team. I think he’s ahead of AFA and would have played major minutes on our team. Very athletic..not so sure about his jump shot and defense.

by tenkaistar on May 18, 2011 1:21 AM PDT up reply actions
