No trade happens Detroit/Charlotte win the lottery

So since everyone is really mad at the results of the lottery early today, I was thinking our opinion on the trade should not change because cleveland win the odds and get the 1st pick with a pick that have the clippers not trade likely would have ended 7th or 9th. The trade was not just we trade the pick for a player who didn't play a game he did and also a player from us stop playing here. Had the trade not happened the game would have likely ended differenly and Charlotte or Detroit would have likely ended with the odds the former Clipper pick had. So trade doesn't happen we don't win the lottery, be glad for Cleveland and remeber we have Blake. And by the way, we didn't trade Baron and the first pick in the draft for Mo, we trade Baron and the 8th pick in the draft for Mo

Nice try.

We traded Baron and the #1 pick in the draft for Mo Williams. Detroit has the 8th pick.

Hindsight is 20/20

Most of us were happy when the trade occured

no two drafts would have the same results

their was one draft and our pick went #1. Whether we had one more ping pong ball doesnt matter OUR BALL WAS SELECTED.

sure it wasn't our ball

in a reality without the baron trade clipper fans went mad. The organization was suspended and eventually bought by mexico. They then turned it into a front for illegal jersey smuggling. They used their #8 pick for cash considerations and invested the profit in a cotton farm outside of Tijuana.

Losing a #1 hurts, but. . .

Im gonna be an optimist on this one. This draft has no sure things. Remember, WE HAVE BLAKE GRIFFIN. The most exciting and talented young player in the ENTIRE league. This team has enough youth in Blake, EJ, DJ, Bledsoe, Aminu. We need to show Blake that we are a team that wins NOW as well as the future. We need vets, and we need to make the playoffs next year. I actually think all the ‘Clippers screwed up again, curse, blah blah’ talk will give Olshey even more motivation to make a splash this summer, and if there was one team id be ok with having this pick, its CLE. Good karma for Clipsnation.

I really hope you’re right. To forget this, our FO better make something happen. Get a vet that will make our team better. This draft is not good at all, so I don’t feel horrible about it..but this gives haters more material.

This is stupid

in no way can losing the #1 overall pick of a draft be construed as a good thing. A questionable deal to begin with, in hindsight is now a horrible deal.

Whoever in the Clippers office who decided not to protect their pick to the Cavs is sweating bullets right now …

Who cares what he thinks.

Most of the media will be crapping on the Clips for this, but I for one could care less. Not impressed by Irving. As i explained above, this team needs VETS, not more teen players. Griffin, Gordon and Dj are enough youth for me. If we want to prove to Blake that we are serious about winning NOW (so he feels comfortable signing a long term deal) we need to make a deal for an impact, veteran SF and an impact bench player.

They couldn’t protect the pick because of the OKC pick the following year. It’s not like the Clippers just forgot.

by Michael White on May 17, 2011 8:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Could have put protection on it

Check out Olshey’s response here

Olshey said he doesn’t believe Cleveland would’ve done the trade had the Clippers insisted on “protection” for their lottery pick. Doing so also would’ve complicated the trade because the Clippers already placed protection on the No. 1 draft pick they sent to Oklahoma City as part of a trade for point guard Eric Bledsoe last year. The Thunder subsequently shipped that pick to the Boston Celtics as part of the Kendrick Perkins-Jeff Green trade.
“Cleveland never would have done it [for a protected pick]. Their intent was to have an additional pick this year,” Olshey said.

Doesn’t believe!? He didn’t ask!?
I think the consensus around the league and the Clips FO is that the Cavs did them a huge favor by taking back Baron’s contract. Therefore, it wasn’t worth protecting the pick. Safe to say the same opinion doesn’t resonate on this site.

Stupid stupid stupid

If the Clips wanted to clear cap room after the lottery all they had to do was offer Randy Foye (or Ryan Gomes) with the 1st round pick and some desperate team like the Kings would have ate that contract for the pick.

Honestly,

Yes, it sucks we don’t get Kyle Irving. Yes, it’d be nice if we got a legitimate PG for next year. However, as noted, the Clippers didn’t do the trade, the odds for the lottery would have changed. Furthermore, trades in general end up this way; it doesn’t go always according to plan. To say the Clippers honestly foresaw that the Minnesota pick might be #1 (in 2012) is non-sense. Sometimes things go our way, sometimes it doesn’t.

We got luck in getting B.Griffin when we weren’t slotted to get him. I remember a lot of people saying how they loved Neil Oshley after the lottery that year.

Hindsight sucks. Shit happens.

Exactly

Besides, we can always get s PG who is better than Kyrie in Deron Williams, CP3, or wait until next years draft and get Marquis Teague.

I'm actually pretty happy for Cleveland

For all the shit that has happened to the Clippers, they’ve had similar if not worse (of late):

Elton Brand betrayed us…
L.James betrayed and embarrassed them

Clipper fans choose to be so and accept the history/losses one way or another….
Cleveland fans have no other team in town to otherwise escape to

The Clippers had a pretty rough season this year…
Cleveland had worse

Besides, if anything, what this pick also did was ensure that Minnesota doesn’t get the first pick this year. That is something of the future [and not the past] that we can discuss. :)

by UC.Clipper on May 17, 2011 9:30 PM PDT up reply actions

By the way, sucks to be Baron Davis.

So much for his job security in Cleveland…he’s either trade bait or just a fading player

by UC.Clipper on May 17, 2011 9:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Wow

didn’t know it was so easy to land a Deron or CP3. Tell you what, the odds of that happening if the CLips were offering Irving, the Minnesota pick and Kaman would be exponentially higher than what the Clips can offer now.

Help us Altered Beast you're our only hope.

by ClipperChuck on May 18, 2011 6:37 PM PDT up reply actions

THIS IS HOW I SEE IT

If we would have got the #1 pick we could have traded the pick for a veteran player i know we could have made some kind of deal that would make us better for next year.
