Thank you for the find

Dallas’s quick execution and the Laker’s sluggishness made this approach really effective. Dirk was also a great playmaker during some of these sets. Oftentimes, the Lakers seemed slow to help the helper which lead to some of the Chandler lobs or open 3’s.

I think there were times where Brown going under the screen worked a ton though. Barea’s decisiveness in combination with his quickness was a significant factor in the quick Dallas ball movement.

I wonder how the Lakers series with the Suns would have went last year if the Suns had a Chandler in the paint. While Stoudemire is not as good of a shooter as Dirk, he is still pretty talented and he had some good playmaking in that series.

Both these examples show the potential of the options that will open up once Griffin has a better midrange shot. He already is a pretty good playmaker.

When you're hot, you're hot

Schemes aside, the series boiled down to the huge difference in 3-point shooting. The Mavs outscored the Lakers by 12, 18, 27 and 45 points from 3 point range for the four games. DAL had an eFGA% of right around 69% vs. less than 30% for the Lakers from 3 range. How many of us scratched our heads when Dallas signed Peja? I know I did. I assumed, incorrectly, that he was over the hill and whoever the Mavs played would punish Peja on the defensive end. Wrong.

You scratched your head over the Peja signing?

He signed for the minimum and replaced Sasha Pavlovic. It was a no risk signing for an all-time great shooter who hadn’t lost his shot.

I'll admit

I thought he lost his shot, or at least the ability to play a factor in games. And when you have at least Marion, giving Brewer a multi-year deal, and Butler thinking he was coming back, I wasn’t expecting anything from Peja. The signing definitely wasn’t a head scratcher since it was a minimum, but the role he’s playing definitely is. I thought he maybe would be an emergency body, kinda like a Rasual role in Chicago. It’s just amazing that he went for 21 (and only miss at the FT line) against the lakers.

Excellent article

I wonder how OKC or Memphis will match up with Dallas. Neither of those teams should be as troubled by a speedy point guard.

Mavs would prefer the Thunder

Dirk wouldn’t have to worry about guarding Ibaka too much. If the Mavs played the Grizz then the ZBo-Dirk would be bizarre matchup in where neither PF would be able to guard one another. Marion vs Durant also sounds fun. Westbrook would be the deciding factor as he has a huge speed advantage against the Mavs guards but as people have noticed it might not be the worst thing for Westbrook to take more shots if it means less shots for Durant.

Last night's OKC game was a lot of fun to watch...

but as the analysts were saying afterwards, both teams had shaky offensive execution. Westbrook may be speedy, but I think the Mavs will expose their youth.

I don’t expect Memphis to last… they’re going to blaze out eventually. Not that I’m unimpressed. In the years to come, how strange that the Clips, Thunder and Grizzlies might be the main powers.

I bet Z-Bo won't guard Dirk

If MEM is going to put Tony Allen on Durant, they’ll put him on Dirk also. Zach will guard Marion. Now, when the team’s go small, I’m not sure what happens, who Zach guards. Peja?
