Draft Day Open Thread

With thanks to Citizen ClipperChuck for starting one in the FanPosts, here's is the front page Draft Day Open Thread. There are just a couple of hours to the start of the draft now, and the trading has begun, with Corey Maggette, John Salmons and Stephen Jackson all involved in a three-team deal between the Bobcats, Bucks and Kings.

I'll be heading to Playa Vista soon to spend draft day with the Clippers, though with no first round pick I'm not sure why I'm bothering. Still, today is also a big day for trades (as evidenced by the activity already) and if the Clippers are going to make good on their "something done by the end of June" comment, it would likely be now or not for a long time. The current CBA expires in a week, and today is more or less the last chance to make deals before a new one is in place.

So will Philadelphia move Andre Iguodala? Will the Clippers make a move with Chris Kaman? Stay tuned.

Yes I know but just strange and kind of disempowering to Vogel

as they usually have input on picking their staff. At least hire him first and then announce the assistant coach.

It's part of deal

The Pacers have made it clear to Vogel that he must have experienced assistants. Vogel did a nice job of coaching the Pacers but the situation strikes me as being very similar to Mike Davis getting the head job after Knight was fired at IU. A good man but over his head. I predict the same outcome for Vogel.

love that trade for the bucks

most of all. they get the best player in the deal, someone who they badly need in that system: a flat out scorer. not only that, but jackson isn’t a bad defender himself, and will fit well under a skiles-led system. jax’s contract isn’t much different from maggette’s, and jax just fits better in mil. udrih is a wonderful backup for jennings, and that they still got a top 20 pick back isn’t so bad neither.

dont know why the kings are doing this, really. i guess they really want jimmer and figure he’ll slide a bit. the charlotte side is ok, but im not raving about it like some.

i feel like most nba fans would be a lot less confident in biyombo’s stock. banking on him to be a legit force in the league might be a bit of a stretch, tbh. who knows if the guy will every had a semblance of an offensive game.

by shap on Jun 23, 2011 2:51 PM PDT up reply actions

It depends

if I were a Kings fan would I have accepted the fact the Kings aren’t going to use their cap space anyways? In that case they really didn’t lose much besides Udrih for Salmons. They saved a few bucks by picking Jimmer 3 picks later. This is a bad basketball trade but there was no way for the Kings to even come close to fixing themselves overnight.

i love battier

i just really dont see him leaving memphis. i could see him take a pay cut to stick around on that team, too.

i just dont see why prince would come here. dont see him as the type to chase a small money raise as oppose to being a role player on a title team.

by shap on Jun 23, 2011 3:13 PM PDT up reply actions

really a better bet would be a kid like wilson chandler

even then i think money will talk a lot when it comes to where he goes

But even before he hurt his arm, the Heat played off of Rondo. I should check 82games, but I sure haven’t seen any indication that Rondo has become a better shooter.

Rondo is far too easy to defend

In two seasons, when Boston is Rondo’s team, they are going to take such a nose dive in the standings

Of course they go hand in hand

But Rondo only succeeds because of the players around him. When he becomes the best player on the team because of declining skills/retirements from the Big 3, Boston will be in a lot of trouble unless they quickly reload with really good players. If they are counting on Rondo to be “The Man”, I doubt that is a playoff team in the East…maybe the 8 seed. The guy can’t shoot at all, and his defender doesn’t have to guard him. Right now, Pierce and Ray are good enough to compensate for that right now. It doesn’t seem like they can keep that up for much longer.

I like the kid and can understand what the team sees in him, but if that gets the deal done, I’m happy with a sf rotation of iggy and Gomes. Maybe we can sign jr smith on the side.

GM redemption

Solid move for both the Bucks and Bobcats, for the Bucks to unload 2/3 of that terrible contract trio that was last years off season is shocking, for them to get better in the process is amazing. For the Bobcats to follow up the Chandler/Wallace giveaways with a move that is much more “rebuilding” than “contract dumping” has to be awesome for their fans. Kinda sucks for Maggette to be a part of yet another “no way we are getting 50 wins team” but sadly that might be the role he was always meant to play.
If these moves can be made, there has to to be a way Olshey can make a good trade(Iggy or a smaller trade that improves overall roster depth) without giving up our “big 3” (BG,EJ,MIN2012) or the rest of the U23 core. Even if there is no hands down great deal available, I would like to see Olshey make some type of move even if its a simple Foye and 3 million for a draft pick(A+ if its top 15). Come on Neil make it 2 good drafts in a row (Aminu at 8,Bledsoe for a future well protected pick and WW were all good values whether or not they become good players) but this time around make a move that adds wins to the current team, not one that pays off when that player is ready.

by Chris O'Reilly on Jun 23, 2011 3:55 PM PDT reply actions

hmmm

Bledsoe is a nice player, but considering the team had a TPE to take on Cook, they could have bought that pick.

Instead of sending a future first.

Olshey HATES draft pick assets, I’ve decided. The only reason why he hasn’t traded the Minny pick, is because at this point he can’t.

with Bledsoe

I don’t know if they could have bought Bledsoe especially since it was OKC, who had no salary issues and bought the pick themselves from Miami, but if it would of been possible that would of been the better move than giving up a future pick

Guess what, the Clips had a TPE. Meaning They wouldn’t have spent any cap taking on Cook’s contract.

Wha?

" the Clips had a TPE. Meaning They wouldn’t have spent any cap taking on Cook’s contract."

Wrong. The Clippers recounced all their exceptions to create cap space to chase LeBron. So they could have taken on Cook in their cap space, but not with a TPE. Now, chasing LeBron was a pipe dream, but they’d gone that far – they weren’t going to take themselves out of contention for Daequan Cook. Besides, when did the Clippers even have a TPE?

my point is

LeBron was a pipe dream.

So instead of living in a made up world where players actually want to play for the Clippers, Olshey could have been proactive, and creative.

Instead he signs useless players to multiyear deals, and throws away draft picks faster than junk mail.

BTW the TPE was from the ZBO trade.

I don’t disagree, smaller opportunistic deals like OKC made would have been smarter, especially in retrospect. But we obviously know why they didn’t do that. Thanks for the Z-Bo reminder – I had forgotten about that TPE.

Well yeah, in hindsight, LeBron was a pipe dream

In hindsight, New York chasing LeBron was a pipe dream too. Chicago too. No one could match what Miami and Dwyane Wade offered. But also, no one knew what was going on behind the scenes. It’s easy to point fingers at the FO now for those decisions, but at the time, a lot of people thought the Clippers weren’t totally crazy—-hell, LeBron said he’d come by to have a chat. When someone like LeBron James says that, you don’t start filling up cap space. You’re expecting quite a bit from the FO.

Soft Deadlines

There are 2 unofficial ones, and one official one.

1) Tonight if you don’t want to be held hostage to a player having 7 days to do a physical and not being able to do any physicals in the lockout.

2) June 30th the last day before a possible lockout (I am not 100% sure if this can be done though do to physicals. Team would need to be in contact with agents).

3) February 2012 as pointed out above.

by ClipperTheorist on Jun 23, 2011 4:51 PM PDT up reply actions

No

It is more or less the last chance before a new CBA is in place, which of course we don’t know how long that would take. So for a couple of reasons (the seven days for physicals, so teams know their draft needs, etc.) today is more or less the last day for a while.

Not sure what you mean by "one last chance"

Many here do not share the negative views expressed constantly by a few people on this site about the past performance of this particular FO. Having said that, the FO needs to do a good job this summer. They have much to work wtih. If they don’t get it done, whether because DTS won’t agree or for whatever reason, we should definitely question the FO and the reasons why we would be supporting this team.

Your post however seems to take as fact the statements made by just a few posters here and I would suggest that they are not right just because they happen to yell the loudes.

by Jax on Jun 23, 2011 5:34 PM PDT up reply actions

That's more or less what i meant

The only reason I said “one last chance” is referring to the Gomes/Foye signings as being blunders, and us missing that first round pick that we could have used as sweetener to get Iggy. I don’t think the Nation’s disappointment in those two things above are limited to those “few people” you’re referring to (see madglove’s post around here about disappointment on trading the pick).

But yeah, if they do a good job this summer, I’m back on board, no questions asked. If they screw up, I’m definitely questioning things.

I’d love him for the Cippers but doubt he will be available. Can never go wrong with a Dukie!

I was thinking of this the other day

Clippers have Griffin, Gordon and Jordan from the 2007 High School class. There are a handful of players from that same class in this draft. Would be interesting to add another one in some ways.

Fire Olshey.

All talk, no action. Even when we’re the frontrunners, we can’t get a freaking deal done. No playoffs again next season. Thanks a lot, Neil.

Excellent.

Now Neil has ths off-season to prove he’s for real. No other chances. Guh. Last off-season, the trade deadline, and now this. We can we get something going here??

Vucevic isn't going to play right away

Kaman has a 1 year contract and if we throw in Aminu they were smart to draft a big.

That's kinda what I was thinking too.. Maybe if we get a decent Center in the 2nd Round, we can include him in a Kaman-for-Iggy trade.

I don't think we can trade a pick later in the draft yet.

Rumor had it that we would swap 2nd rounders with the 76ers if we did make a deal with the 76ers. Both of those picks have to happen before a trade can be announced.

I don’t know anything. Just saying.

I've never heard of a GM who is literally unable to complete a normal trade.

Even Dunleavy could do that.

Neil better have made an absolute steal of a trade while he was working the phones.

As long as we're grasping at straws...

Any chance the trade has been expanded and Vucevic comes bck to us as DJ’s backup? Also, Kaman as a one year mentor might also work…

I doubt that Vucevic would come over in the trade

Olshey consistently said he didn’t like this draft class.

DJ's response
D.J. Foster :
Question from Steve: DJ are the Iggy rumors now dead with the Sixers taking Nikola?

I don’t think that the drafting of Nikola Vucevic would necessarily change what Philadelphia wants to do.
