Around SBN: Trent Richardson Interviews Fellow Brown Brandon Weeden

My take on Travis Leslie....

I first heard of this guy during the Memphis series when this guy laughed off Tony Allen comparisons and said that he will be a better than Tony Allen at the next level.  That caught my attention and I said to my self, " I want that guy on the clips!"  I think we could use a hard nosed tough guy with swagger which can sometimes be positive for a team.  Look at what Tony Allen did for Memphis...  DeShawn Stevenson for Dallas or Washington...  Dahntay Jones for Denver against the Lakers a few years ago...  JR Smith for Denver...  He's just that mother F#$K@r defender thats a tick to opposing teams that can play good defense at the PG,SG, & SF positions. I think a guy like this is needed especially next to a quiet guy like Eric Gordon.

He's 6' 41/2" ; 205lbs ; 6' 11" wingspan; an amazing athlete (maybe the  most athletic in this draft), I think he can do some damage and cause problems with the second team.

CHECK OUT THIS INTERVIEW...  I LIKE HOW HE DOESN'T GIVE A RUN OF THE MILL ANSWER....

As for Trey Tompkins, he does nothing for me. Unless his childhood friend Aminu makes him work his ass off... I think  Ike Diogu or Craig Smith will make sure this guy becomes a good piece for the Bakersfield Jam with Willie Warren.  The fact that Arn Tellem is the reason why we drafted him actually makes me wonder what leverage Arn has over the FO.... Are we in the mix for one of Arn Tellem's athletes?  Here is a list of people that Arn Tellem reps... Oh Look DeAndre Jordan is on that list.  Weird.....

Meh

Tony Allen is the best perimeter defender in the whole damn league. If Leslie is even half the defender Allen is, with the same offense Allen has, he will make the lineup.

I doubt he is anywhere near Allen, though if he is, it would be a very pleasant surprise.

Thompkins might be a useful stretch 4, but we already have one in Cook, and Diogu/Rhino are better players as of right now (probably).

You or I don't matter... We are nobody's

The people in the NBA thinks he’s a pretty good defender. They voted.

I’ll take Kobe’s defense over Tony Allen any day of the week.

Kobe can be a great defender, but rarely ever showcases skills in that area.

He always guards the Bruce Bowens’, Ryan Gomes’, Donte Greenes of the league rather than the Manu Ginobilis, Eric Gordons and Tyreke Evans’. Artest, Ariza, etc. always get the tougher cover. Someone like our own Gordon is expected to guard the Kobes, Wades, Roys (when healthy) and still score 20 to 30. If Kobe is always going to guard the opposing team’s weakest player (1-3), then he doesn’t deserve the accolade of being a 1st team All-NBA Defender.

It’s the best method for the team with him not overexerting himself by playing both ways, but he shouldn’t be rewarded if he doesn’t actually do what is required of being voted for. He didn’t deserve his MVP award either, Chris Paul did. So the voters do not always get it right.

I'd also rather see Allen get the props for the award over Kobe for what he actually does during the season.

If Tony Allen and Kobe were on the same team, Allen would get the tougher cover. If Kobe honed in on D like he did during the Olympics, then he would definitely be deserving of an accolade such as 1st All-NBA Defense.

Kobe’s D is way overrated. His name shouldn’t be anywhere near the All-Defense teams

Travis Leslie already backing down from his Tony Allen statement

Tony Allen called him out and Leslie is now saying what he meant was felt he could be a better offensive threat in time.

Travis Leslie

There is a spot on any roster for a top notch lockdown defender in the league. The ability to shoot 80% from the FT is another asset.

I'd rather keep Foye then trade for Sessions

Sessions is over paid and can’t shoot, where as Foye is cheap and can is at least serviceable.

It's not that Sessions is over paid.

He and Foye get paid the same, play the same position, back-up combo guard. But Sessions has an extra year on his deal for such a lateral move to tie up an extra year is just superfluous.

no, travis leslie is a steal of the draft because he has freakish athleticism and high upside and potential

Whether he becomes Lebron James or Joe Alexander is determined by how hard he’s going to work. It’s the second round, no one expects greatness, so every second round pick is determined by potential and upside. So being able to draft a player in the second round who already has NBA level athleticism can be considered a steal.

Now go away troll.

Leslie and Thompkins

Thompkins reminds me alot of Brian Cook. So much so that I expect him to have a career like Cook, if he’s even given the chance to be on an NBA roster.

I have alot more hope for Leslie. To make it as a second round pick you have to have some specialized NBA skill. Seems Leslie can be an above average defender and rebounder for his position. Without seeing him play one NBA minute I’d still almost rather have him playing then Foye. Could he be this year’s Landry Fields?

by Beasel on Jun 25, 2011 9:57 AM PDT reply actions

Landry Fields had an amazing first half to the year

However, he was junk in the 2nd half and the playoffs, and a lot of Knicks fans want to dump him.

He is still a steal, but not as big of a steal as he looked to be in December.

LAndry Fields on any other team with the same opportunity wouldn't even be half as good.

by Akram47 on Jun 25, 2011 4:57 PM PDT up reply actions

I see Thompkins as a Tim Thomas Type

He is a skilled shooting PF that doesn’t rebound particularly well, has lots of “skill”, not too athletic and probably won’t live up to his skills.

by bigfish81ss on Jun 28, 2011 2:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Wouldn't mind that

just as long as he doesn’t fall in love with his jump shot like Timmy did and take those horrid clinkers. So we have a guy to compare to Tim Thomas and one to Tony Allen/Corey Maggette. Those are good role player types for a playoff team.

by mustang6944 on Jun 28, 2011 8:43 PM PDT up reply actions

I think Thompkins will pan out into a good bench player for the Kills

He is more skillfull than Cook and might make the team over Smith/Ike. I think both Leslie and Thompkins will make the team this season, due to the lockout! With Thompkins on the team I don’t really see the point of having Cook!

Cook will be Thompkins mentor. Thompkins should make the team..a stretch 4. But might end up being the 3rd PF..not in the rotation. Am sure he will get an opportunity, but I’m not expecting a lot this year. He might soft for the NBA inside game.

by tenkaistar on Jun 26, 2011 12:37 AM PDT up reply actions

That’s what I wonder as well about him; will he come out soft. Not if Blake has his way, I’m sure. How bad does he want it? Him being a first rounder drafted in the 2nd should definitely be some motivation to prove himself and earn a big contract when his first is up.

Like on analyst said and someone else mentioned; It’s good to be a specialist in this league, and Leslie & Thompkins are that. Leslie with D. Thompkins with offense.

Coincidentally, Leslie and Thompkins provide a counter balance to Mo and DJ, respectively .

people still only think of is jump shot

but…

An offensively gifted power forward with ideal size for his position … Stands about 6’10" in shoes with a long wingspan … Has good overall strength, which he uses often in post-up situations … Has a very versatile low-post game … Exceptional footwork with fast and efficient pivot moves … Looks great on either side of the hoop and can finish after turning over either shoulder … Has a developing hook shot that shows a lot of promise … Soft hands and a knack for establishing position makes him an easy target for post-entry passes … Uses a lot of fakes under the rim … Makes the defense commit and then takes advantage … Doesn’t waste any time making his move after catching the ball … Keeps the ball high and away from roaming defenders … Tough to knock off balance … Has a nice 10-15 foot turnaround jump

…let’s not forget his apparent strength.

Talking about Thompkins right?

The part that really interested me is “Doesn’t waste any time making his move after catching the ball”. I like that in a player. Decisive, gets the shot off before the defense can react. That’s what I like most about Z-Bo’s game. That’s the kind of guy who will surprise you with how many points he puts up. Rhino has some of that … not messing around with pump fakes … scores more than a guy of his limited size and athleticism reasonably should.

Theses two picks are going to do absolutely nothing to better this team.

We have a pretty bad bench

I think these two are good backups to Blake and EJ. I agree we need a Small Forward and a Point Guard, maybe we get Wilson Chandler and as for PG I think that we should target Earl Watson.

Clippers own staples center!!!

by ClipperBEAST on Jun 25, 2011 3:06 PM PDT up reply actions

I think these picks improve our bench

Leslie provides defense behind Gordon on the wing. How many times did we see players scorch Foye (see Thornton, Marcus) because of gordon being out or on the bench? We just saw Memphis make a run to the playoffs with a similar type player.

What TT provides is more like a combination of Cookie and Diogu. More importantly, we added to the length issue of this team. If Kaman is moved, at least we are not stuck with Cookie as our other big. He may spell the end of either Diogu or Smith (preferably cookie).

by mustang6944 on Jun 25, 2011 11:27 PM PDT up reply actions

if Thompkins can do what it says, I definitely think that the Rhino is gone. Cookie also becomes worthless…which is a very good thing.

After they picked up another wing in the draft who is more of a shooting guard, I wonder i they do not bit on something above the MLE? Especially if Nene ops out.

I always wonder if fringe players like Watson

and an earlier post I saw stating Cook could mentor Thompkins really happens. Do these guys really want to teach others to take away their jobs?

Some due

it is sort of the thing that gets passed down in the NBA. The mentoring thing. But I remember Watson having a hard time with that when he was younger. Wonder if it changed.

Also, Bledsoe, Warren and Leslie have Pack to be their mentor. Plus we have Eisley on the staff. We really do not need to bring in a guard to mentor our young guys.

Here's what Tony Allen had to say about Trravis Leslie's comments regarding him...LoL

When I watched his(Leslie) interview, I took his comments to mean what he later replied but he definitely didn’t word it that what….

“I feel like I’m a little better than Tony Allen,” ….-with some more telling stuff here in the middle-….“Hopefully I can be compared to someone better. He’s basically known for his D.”

….and Tony heard.

…: “Who is this dude!! Consider the source and please don’t mention my name with lames in the same sentence,” Allen typed, before going in with the granddaddy of them all. “I’m just saying first get drafted and get ready for (LeBron James), (Dwyane Wade), (Kobe Bryant), (Manu Ginobli) and (Paul Pierce) Cause I been through the fire!! Ya dig?”…

Leslie Tweet-orted with this:

…“I said he was known for his defense and I feel like I’m a better offensively player than him. Why cant I think that Smh”…

and later with…

... “I said its good to be compared to him. I said If I keep working hard on my game I feel like I COULD be a better player and scorer.” …

I’ll be watching if they are both ever on the court at the same time. …didn’t staff and some players around the league say that T. Allen was one player that they were genuinely wise not to mess with? Not that this Leslie said anything worthy of being worried over…but should he start that trend?!?

…. and let’s just say I just added two tweets to follow

here’s a link to Leslie’s pre-draft interview…lmbo!

people (T. Allen and Givony) get to caught up in the small stuff

Could be the steal of the draft.

I don’t pretend to know what any of these advance stats say, but it was interesting to see that based off their metric used by dberri site (in this case Arturo), forecasted who the top players from this draft would be. Of course Irving, Faried, Williams, Burks, Leonard were there. As was the least popular of the Morris twins Markieff. The other was Leslie, making him the steal of the draft.
