D-Will : NBA players have options overseas
Very interesting article. D-Will confirms that he had the backing of the union, that he can play without voiding his current contract, that he's getting insurance, and that he thinks there's a large market for NBA players or at least stars elsewhere that can pay them substantial money.
All of this is in line with my initial reaction to the news. We will see how it plays out.

Good for D-Will and the others who follow his lead
Provides leverage for players’ side of the negotiations, and keeps in competitive basketball shape. Sitting around and waiting for a season to appear sucks. Go out and do something about it.
Leverage + Negotiations = Market price right?
Market price = compromise = 1 side does not get hosed = balanced CBA
Some players may have to: get coffee at McDonalds instead of Starbuck
befriend Blake to get a good deal on a Kia and Subway coupons, make it rain with Monopoly money in the clubs, switch to Cold Duck from Cristal, actually date someone with a job (legal),

Unless he's getting the equivalent of $16M
There will be no permanent exodus.
Kind of a pointless article. Not interesting in the slightest.

Funny that you have to waste everyone's time posting about something you don't understand

he's basically saying
if the new CBA cuts player salaries so much (down 1/3), NBA stars like him or Kobe would consider playing overseas permanently.
As of now, with the CBA uncertain, and no real superstar presence in the Euroleagues or otherwise, it’s not likely for at least a few years, but it isn’t inconceivable to see a world class player getting 10+ Mil a year- or roughly what they’d make under a new CBA according to the owners’ terms.
Wasn't Italy talking about throwing 50m at Kobe when he hit FA a few years ago?
I hadn’t considered this angle. If stars can make way more abroad, that’s a great bargaining chip. Tho the rest of the players would be screwed.

Maybe Kobe will get a sex change and play in the WNBA
Now that his dad was named coach of the LA Sparks.

Even JChill made a ton of money overseas (around $10M / year) if I recall correctly

Details
Agent Jim Tanner said Wednesday the three-year deal was worth about $20 million after taxes.
Also, the article mentions it was the most lucrative deal in European basketball history.

Right
Thanks for confirming that. I couldn’t recall the exact numbers, but that’s pretty close.
And of course let’s not lose the forest for the trees here – my point is that if a player like J Chill – who had been making around $2 M before that (appx) – can pull that kind of coin in Europe, imagine how much money could potentially be available to starrs.

What is $20 /m for 3 years after taxes worth before taxes? $35 M?

No enough to keep him playing in Europe
Apparently…
JChill made that much
because there weren’t that many top level NBA talents in the Euroleagues.
I think there will be cases where a vanity owner just throws huge money at true superstar, but that’ll be really rare. Owning a basketball team in Europe doesn’t have the same panache as owing a soccer team- and there aren’t many besides the top stars like LeBron, etc., or a good player with local connections, Tony Parker, etc., that would get a team interesting in throwing out huge contracts.
But there’s a chicken and egg argument. If NBA caliber players fill up rosters, the level of play increases, popularity increases, revenues go up- allowing more teams to pay more to get NBA caliber players.
Another consideration:
Most leagues have a limit on how many foreign guys can be on the roster.
yeah I get that
Went back and re-read the article.
Saw the words “unprecedented” and “long-term” but not permanent.
Given that D-Will has more star power than past-prime ’Nique WIlkins and VDN, I would argue that so far this is unprecedented.
