How Good is Deandre Jordans defense?
He is averaging a league leading 3.4 monster blocks per game
1 steal a game!
Statistically, those are Defensive Player of the Year type #s
I think they are up there with the old days of Marcus Camby, Ben Wallace and the likes
On the other hand, I watched him play and he seems to take a lot of gambles on blks and steals. Doesn't really box out well and is slow on the pick on roll
Thoughts fellas?

He doesn’t appear to be too fast afoot.. All the problems you mentioned could be in one degree or another due to the aforementioned. I think he has admitted he takes to many gambles on defense. I know he has said that he needs to do a better job playing defense on the floor rather than playing so much above the rim.
I'd take a center who gambles over one who doesn't.
Does he gamble a bit much? Yeah, he could tone it down some. But most of the sorry excuse for centers in today’s NBA don’t defend the paint enough. DJ changes games, like against the Heat. He erased several sure buckets down the stretch. He said somewhere that he is trying to figure out when to block and when to box out, and I think he will. This is only his second season getting real minutes. I’ve liked what he’s done this year, overall.
Ben and Marcus also dominated the glass in their prime
DJ needs to work on his rebounding if he wants to be seriously considered as the DPOY.
No, it's the Clip Show!
He needs to work on his boxing out.
But I think he will lose a ball or two every game. Why? He just has bad hands.
My exact thoughts as soon as I read the fan post.
He has all the ability in the world, but is obviously lacking the nose for it. Maybe spending time with Kevin Love in the offseason will help???

agreed but rebounding shouldn't be a defensive category.
i can’t wait to see dj play against dwight howard. it will be funny watching Deandre swat super mans shots

Why not? It's a stop.
If you pull down 7-8 defensive rebounds per game, that is 7-8 opposing offensive possessions that you successfully stopped. Getting a defensive rebound is more important than blocking a shot that the opposing team recovers, contesting a shot that they make or deflecting a pass that gives them the possession out of bounds.

he's on his way
but not quite there yet
let’s revisit this in a year or so
Ralph, "Last year so often with Blake Griffin you would see these things coming, with Paul, he's so crafty, all of a sudden boom there it is."
He deserves consideration
He’s altering and blocking shots in the paint. His individual defense has been good at times (ask Aldridge). His rebounding is down from being out of position however and that is causing some easy baskets from his man off those offensive boards. But yes he deserves consideration but he’s well behind Dwight Howard for the award.

I predict
that if DJ continues to lead the NBA in blocks convincingly as he is, there is no choice but to make him 1st team, if not DPOY. Even then, many voters have already decidedto vote for dwight, and there isnt alot that would change that. So he might get snubbed to the 2nd team.
If it was just blocked shots
then Theo Ratliff would have a few DPOY awards. Defensive rebounding is a huge part of defense, you limit the number of 2nd chance baskets and it really improves your defense.
Fact is right now are the Clippers overall are a below average defensive team so DJ doesn’t deserve it.

Dwight is blowing away DJ in dreb
but DJ is blowing away Dwight in blocks.
Dwight- 11drebpg, DJ- 5drebpg
Can Dwight sustain his 15rpg average? Can DJ sustain his 3+bpg average?
Ultimately, Dwight will probably get it no matter what, but it is easy to make a case for DJ.
+1
Blocks does not equal DPOY. DJ has got to improve his rebounding and not biting on pump fakes so much.
