710 ESPN (Lakers station) discussing trading Blake for Dwight

The halfway decent Max & Macellus and the absurd Lakers apologists Mason & Ireland were discussing Dwight Howard rumors (as is their wont), and in particular, this newest rumor of Howard being "intrigued" by the Clippers.

Someone suggested that the Clippers trade Blake Griffin to the Magic for Howard, and slide DJ to PF.

It's typical of what passes for Lakers talk radio, but I thought I would put it out their to the Nation so that you can all weigh in.

Me first:

HELL NO!!!!!

I wouldn't trade Blake for Howard. Griffin is a dynamic talent who will only get better. Howard, while a defensive monster, has a limited offensive game, and may be close to reaching his peak.

I don’t think we will improve any more with Dwight. I don’t think there is any net gain from having Dwight over Griffin. Dwight may be a way better defensive presence, but you lose Blake’s offensive skills and passing. Plus blake fits more, of course the team is being tailored around him now.

DJ as PF?

They’d have to throw in Ryan Anderson, but even then it’s a lateral move. Dwight may be great, but his career numbers are 18-12. Blake already eclipsed that in his ROOKIE season.

He’s four years older on top of it, thanks, but no thanks. Have fun in Dallas.

almost convinced me it would be a good trade. I just don’t know, Dwight IS the best center in the game no questions asked, and almost never misses any games, and is also one of the most likeable personalities in the league. I would love him on the clips with or without Blake. That being said, something is just so much more special about nurturing your own talent, and I think a clips team built around Blake would mean more to me, and much more fun to follow than one built around Paul and Howard.

I have to say I wouldn’t do it at this point, but it does make some interesting conversation. Let’s say you COULD do it straight up, I think you’d have to trade DJ for hopefully a serviceable starting 4. Dwight + Anderson for Blake +DJ would be interesting, or like Dwight for Blake + filler (Mo, or Foye/Gomes). What could DJ land you? Boozer? Scola? Josh Smith?

I just have to say, I don’t think there’s a reason why the clips need Dwight to be contenders, so I don’t see why they’d make a gamble move like this, unless it can be done without Blake and CP.

I'm also still not convinced

Dwight has that competitive fire that is obvious when you watch CP and Blake play. I think CP’s and Blake’s personalities actually might complement each other better. Yes both CP and Dwight play with a smile on their face, so that might look like a good match, but I think their attitude behind the smile is very different.

a timely survey

Since we’re on this, I think the NBA GM survey which was released today has an interesting perspective. To the question "If you were starting a franchise and could sign any player, who would it be?" the answers were:
Kevin Durant (10 votes), LeBron James (10), Derrick Rose (4), Dwight Howard (2), Dwyane Wade (1), Blake Griffin (0).

So at least two NBA GMs would presumably trade Dwight Howard for anyone else in the entire league straight up. On the other hand, zero would trade Griffin for anyone straight up.

We don’t know where Olshey falls on that question, and everyone is entitled to their opinion. But we know at least two guys who are paid to make these kids of decisions would choose Howard – not just over Blake, but over ANYONE.

There’s some pure comedy gold in that GM survey. Tagline should be, “Your team is run by a bunch of idiots.” I got to imagine that interns were filling out some of those surveys.

On the topic of Blake for D12…if for pure basketball reasons, you make that trade in a heartbeat. Well, except Mobley’s (too soon?) HEARTBEAT. If LBJ is #1 in this league, Dwight is #1B, not #2.
