Pau Gasol on the Clippers

So today, while driving home after work, I was listening to ESPN Radio when the folks there replayed a snippet of an interview with Pau Gasol during training. In the interview, they asked Pau why he thought Clippers were so good this season. His response was short and to the point: Clippers are good because of the schedule. No other reason. I thought to myself, "you arrogant pr***!" It is amazing that these fools cannot give the Clippers their due.

It is not hard to praise other teams when they have improved. We do it here all the time. For example, we recognize that the Timberwolves have improved and we have said it openly. The Laker arrogance knows no boundaries.

Poor Gasol

Let’s be nice, we all know how bad it is to be on a team that’s out of the top 8 in the conference.

That isnt all he said though

He did mention how the Lakers have had the hardest schedule (and the most games) and we have had among the fewest game.

However, he also talked about how we now have quality veterans with experience and that this is a serious game for them.

Sure, he wasnt exactly complimentary, but he didnt rip on the team either.

I don't know if there is any official way to decide.

But our schedule has been tough too. Quality over quantity, and we have played more quality teams/we have played with more injury. Bulls at their best (Lakers did not play the best Bulls team), San Antonio with a healthy Manu, Blazers TWICE, and a Miami team with all three of their stars playing. Injury has also come at the most unfortunate time, because we played a gelled Utah team without Mo and CP3 and the Wolves without Caron and CP3. Overall, I think our schedule has been just as tough, and if you consider injury, it has been tougher (but I won’t count that as a factor). The Lakers have had a busy schedule, but their reliance on 3 players cost them heavily and made it much more difficult; they played the Bulls (who were out of sync), the Nuggets twice (Nuggets weren’t playing like they are now), Portland, Miami, and Magic. So I think our schedules have evened out to be pretty fair/even, it just so happens that the Lakers aren’t able to beat the elite teams.

lately their's has been harder

back-to-back at Miami and at Orlando and then home against a surprisingly tough Pacers team. But fear not, our schedule is about to get really really tough.

We had the highest strength of schedule for a while… I’m not sure if we still do. Ours should still be higher than the Lakers… they’ve played against a lot of easy teams

Gasol also gets his words mixes a little bit when speaking

He really was not that condescending in the interview.

While they have played more games than us......

our strength of schedule is more difficult than theirs. Pau is on the down
and what else can he say. He also said that Bynum and him were better
than Howard so take that with a grain of salt.

by ENCUEROMAN on Jan 24, 2012 7:03 PM PST reply actions

I don't disagree either

I’m not going to be quick to judge Bynum and Gasol > Howard or the other way around; it’s just that 14 feet is a steep price for 7.

Then obviously...
14 feet is a steep price for 7

…we should immediately offer Brian Cook and Solomon Jones for Howard.

how about cook and bledsoe

6"9 and 6 ft. so 12"9 inches. still taller than 7 feet

out of context - Pau said him and Bynum could be better than D12 in the post (offensively)

I think he was trying to say that, Pau and Bynum have softer touches and good post moved around the rim.

typical clipper/laker hate

last year:

“ZOMG LAKERS GOT AN EASY START TO THE SEASON WHILE CLIPS GET BS SCHEDULE”

this year:
“LAKERS ARE A BUNCH OF BITCHES”

Sometimes, the homerism is too much.

The Lakers have had a horrible schedule. Clippers have had one of the easiest schedules.

Let’s call a spade a spade.

I hope none of you bitch when the schedule gets really condensed.

Quality over quantity.

I don’t think you are seeing the difference in a BUSY schedule and a DIFFICULT schedule. The Sixers have 1 less game than the Lakers at 17, but by no means have they had a tough schedule. Yes, they have had almost the same amount, but they have played lower teams so that made their schedule easier. The Lakers played lesser teams, but they weren’t able to capitalize and blow them out to the point where they could rest their starters.

by SurfinQ00 on Jan 24, 2012 9:43 PM PST up reply actions

Later on the Lakers will play a lot of good teams with almost no back-to-backs

And we will play a lot of bad teams with a ton of back-to-backs. It evens out.

I don’t think as many people were saying “LAKERS ARE A BUNCH OF BITCHES” as you think.

Why do you ALWAYS have to take the negative point of view?

The Clippers have had one of the lightest schedules, but certainly not one of the easiest. Mostly we’ve played top Western Conference teams, plus the 2 best teams from the East. Our road record is 1-3, but that’s largely because we’ve played 1 bad team (GSW) and 3 teams that are VERY hard to beat on their home courts (SA, POR, UTAH). And even the lightest part entirely true anymore, considering they had a b2b2b and 5 games in 7 days last week. And oh yeah, they went 3-2 in that stretch w/o their best player. Yet I didn’t hear a single person “bitching” about it.

you don't get my point

almost everyone was bitching about the schedule for the Clippers last year compared to the Lakers

Now everyone thinks its dumb that a Laker can point out the schedule difference.

Let’s call a spade a spade. last year the schedule f’d the Clips and favored the Lakers. This year it’s the other way around.

I’m not being negative just pointing out how fickle everyone is.

In all honesty I believe in Bill Parcells “you are what your record says you are”

Clips sucked last season, so the schedule had nothing to do with it. Lakers clearlyaren’t as good this season, and their schedule has nothing to do with it.

Well said. I posted more about this on the game preview, and I don’t think the Lakers’ record has anything to do with their schedule, and everything to do with how good they are.

I never said you were attacking people

I said you take the negative point of view about the Clippers pretty much always. I don’t care if you attack people and/or stupidity. I do it all the time. Have at it. But I’m going to do the same, and that means going after you for your ceaseless, relentless negativity.

As for missing your point, you said, “Clippers have had one of the easiest schedules.” I was pointing out that this isn’t really true. Their strength of schedule has been the 3rd hardest in the league.

every game is not a gimmie

but when they have played the least amount of games in the league… then yea easy

here is my point:

clippers have played the least amount of games this season.

2/3rds of their games have been at home

clippers have had the least amount of back to backs

I’m not being negative, I’m telling the truth. Truth is Clippers have had the easiest schedule in terms of games played, back to backs, and ratio of home games to away games.

We have more back to back also, so its all crap and crying sour grapes.

Well, like DJ said to the OC Register
But no matter how hard they tried, the Clippers acknowledged they’ve heard the talk coming from Barnes and Derek Fisher, who dismissed the notion of a rivalry by pointing to the banners at Staples Center at Lakers All-Access, three nights after the Clippers’ 102-94 win.

"No disrespect to those guys at all, but I really don’t care," DeAndre Jordan said. "…If people talk about us like that, obviously, we’re doing something right."

Lakers have played more games, but:

1) Clippers better record
2) Clippers 1-0 head to head
3) Clippers stronger SOS
4) And all that with 8 starter games missed due to injury (Paul 5, Billups 2, Butler 1) and the Lakers have zero (unless you count whoever their starting SF is)

Pau ignores multiple quite a few things.

Well, the Lakers will have a higher SOS after tomorrow’s game! haha.

No, it doesn't count

He was suspended due to his style of play. In essence, he chose that path.

Not as an excuse

But it certainly counts as a reason why they don’t have a great record.

Somewhat agree

But their team has not performed well because the players (Bynum) have not committed to a style of play that can keep them in the game. He’s likely to do it again (the Barea foul was not his first offense) and further hurt his team.

It's just that time of the month for Gasoft.

Stop worrying about what the Clippers are doing and start worrying about how you’re going to manage to get ball long enough from Kobe to put up a shot.

Anyone have another argument about why the Clippers schedule is tougher/just as tough.

Got into an argument with my friends and they refuse to budge at all. They claim that
Denver x2, Orlando, Miami, Bulls, Blazers, Pacers, Utah x2 vs our Blazers x2, Miami, Bulls, Utah, San Antonio. My argument was that it was quality vs quantity; The Lakers played several of these teams early on when they weren’t gelled and the Heat without 100% LeBron or Wade. The Clippers have faced tough teams at their fullest like Miami, the bulls, Utah, and Spurs. (All were extremely gelled/ on the mark when they played). The up side of this argument was when I said the Clippers also played the well overlooked Wolves, he said records don’t lie, and I had him admit the Lakers weren’t a play off team ;) !

by SurfinQ00 on Jan 25, 2012 4:24 PM PST reply actions

Our schedule has been beneficial to us so far.

It was a few weeks before we played a b2b game let alone a b2b2b. We’ve been able to rest/recover from injuries, get in some quality practices to improve the cohesion of a newly structured team and have had the benefit of playing at home/sleeping in our own beds.

The downside was that we had tougher opponents than the majority of the league throughout the first 3 weeks of the season. The Lakers had one of the easiest schedules based on quality of opponents. When they went on their 5 game winning streak they played Golden State (2-5), Memphis (3-5), Phoenix (4-5), overtime in Utah (6-4) and Cleveland (5-6). Utah was a quality team, but the other teams were struggling. Memphis is now one of the hottest teams in the league, but weren’t at the time. The Lakers have played 12 of their 18 games at Staples, which is something that other teams cannot say. Playing against teams like Minnesota and Toronto has weakened our strength of schedule (SOS) rating.

To sum it up, we had better conditions, but a tougher challenge due to quality of opponents and for being a roster with high turnover (8 new players, 3 new starters).
