Kevin Love Agrees To Four-Year, $60M Extension
This is the genius of David Kahn and Glenn Taylor. Refuse to offer your franchise player and Top 5 Power Forward a five year deal. Watch as he agrees to take a four year deal ONLY with an opt-out after Year Three.
Can anyone say LeBron James or Chris Bosh?
And what would people say if DTS did this to Blake (which he definitely won't).
Inexplicable move.

Either way...
This signing will eliminate any talk about Love going to the Lakers, of course, these rumors usually starts from John Ireland and all the rest of Laker “fans”.
Technically, the Lakers will have the cap room when he opts out.
Kobe, Pau, Artest and Blake all expire in the summer of 2014. Bynum will likely be on his 3rd contract and could be the only salary on the books.

That opt-out will make Lakers fans drool over themselves in due time...
We need Bill Walton back: "Where would the LA Clippers franchise be without Sean Rooks? Bo Outlaw might be the best pick up of the off season.

I swear if the Magic or Nets are so dumb they deserve to suck for a while.
Kobe, D12, and DWill
Make the Lakers an instant title contender…that better not happen!!!
I'm starting to think that...
Otis Smith will be dumb enough to not trade Dwight and “make one last run at the title” in a last-ditch effort to convince him to stay.
Clippers // Chargers // Rays // Boise State
"The Lakers do win games. But things can change." - Blake Griffin
I don't think that's dumb at all
Their owner is also very old and wants to win a championship.
I agree that it's not necessarily stupid
Come on, look, they’re 12-5. It’s one thing to trade him if their a sub .500 team or even a .500 team but with that record, hell yeah I’d hold onto him. Otis Smith is going to have a very hard decision to make come March 15. But, for the time being, no way you trade Howard.

There are no truly great offers out there atm.
The Lakers haven’t offered both Bynum and Gasol. The Clippers aren’t offering up a package including Blake. The Nets package is underwhelming. Dallas has nothing to offer. Orlando may as well try to keep him, try to win and hopefully call his bluff.

??? What does it have to do with the new CBA?
You don’t think Love’s worth the money? Who on that team is worth more? The Wolves aren’t anywhere near the cap or the luxury tax. They need to put people in the seats. There not going to find a better player than Love to do exactly that.
well no , because if he tries to leave the way the cba has it setup the other teams cannot offer as much money on a re-up. you still get the 1 extra year, the extra 3% yearly salary increases AND it is much more difficult to do a sign and trade in the new CBA.
so the current team still has more leverage. I mean i would have just signedh im for 5 years, but in the end its not a completely indefensible move.
he’ll get the most money with the t-wolves when he uses his 3 year out anyway (he’ll bein the league 7 years, which means he can get 30% of the cap then) since he cant get 30% now, since he hasnt been an all star 2 times yet.
It's better to have him than not have him at all, but...
you have a franchise player that wants to be with you long-term even though you’re in Minnesota. They should have given him 5 years. Now he can walk after 3. Minnesota can offer him an extra year and higher raises, but can they assure him of playing for titles? Can they guarantee that they are going to make the necessary roster moves to build a winner? They can, but they now have less time to do so. Plus, he would have the opportunity to make more money from endorsements while playing in a bigger market during his prime.

I'll give you the point about the sign-and-trade...
The rest of it, the years and the money is more or less the same as it used to be for a top tier player. The thing that makes no sense is that they’re saving the five year deal for someone else. Even in the unlikely event that one of their players develops into something as good or better than love (thought I don’t see anyone on that team that will be better than Love), then let them have the four year deal. The other guy got their first, so what?

Where does it say that Kahn refused to offer the 5 year deal?
It looks to me like KLove wanted the option to opt out after 3 and he got the 4 year deal that he wanted.

must be because K Love is not a PG

No, I can't sleep and it's worse than ever!!
I bumped this to the front page because I’m obsessed with the parallels between Love/TWolves and Griffin/Clippers. For months I’ve been squawking about how KLove might not re-sign with the TWolves… and how Griffin might have the same attitude about the Clips… unless they did something to show they were a real NBA team… namely bring in better players, make good front office decisions, and getting a real NBA coach. For the Clips one of those things seems to have happened. For the Wolves one of those things seems to have happened.
Yesterday, we assumed that David Kahn had only offered Kevin Love a four year max deal… which seemed to me like an egregious error. But now it appears that Love was the one that wanted the shorter deal… and has built a trapdoor in the contract to get himself out if he doesn’t like where the TWolves are taking him after only three seasons.
Our Fearless Leader argued heatedly with me that an NBA player is more or less locked into the team that drafted him for seven years… because, simply enough, no one could pay him as much money as that original team. But that theory just went up in smoke who just signed for only six… or maybe only five.
The reason this might be important to Clipper fans is fairly obvious isn’t it?
So what do you do if your Donald Sterling and Neil Olshey? You’ve got fifteen months with Chris Paul and a year before you extend Blake Griffin. Maybe you wanna take a good hard look at the man on the sidelines in the nice suits and the shiny hair. Because you’re betting your franchise on that guy.
I repeat:

Also.
Durant, Rose, Westbrook, and Love (if they had let him) are bucking the trend. These guys WANT to stay with their teams long term. Maybe the PR backlash LeBron, Melo, and Dwight are taking is waking them up.

I didn't see that. Sorry.
You’re right. Amazing. Kahn amazes. Though in fairness, perhaps this time it’s Glen Taylor.
There is
Love said Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor and president of basketball operations David Kahn did not want to offer the five-year deal to the All-Star power forward.
“Did I want the five years? Of course,” Love said on a conference call from Dallas, where the Timberwolves were scheduled to play the Mavericks on Wednesday night. “It was something I felt strongly about, but at the end of the day, a four-year deal is still great.”

Couldn't make that link work...
I think it’s this.
But it doesn’t really change my argument that Love took fewer years and less money. To GfP’s point, Minny’s short offer is baffling, but Love also left money on the table, which many around here said would NEVER happen.
No , he didn't
They never offer the 5th year, he took 4 and the chance to go out after 3.
Um...
Griffin might have the same attitude about the Clips… unless they did something to show they were a real NBA team… namely bring in better players, make good front office decisions, and getting a real NBA coach. For the Clips one of those things seems to have happened.
Um… pretty sure two of those things have happened. Better players have been brought in, and Neil Olshey’s record thus far as GM has been very good, all things considered.
We just need to replace VDN if someone better is interested and available. We don’t know that for sure yet.

"The Lakers do win games. But things can change." - Blake Griffin
Poorly worded on my part. Their were two items not three in that list...
Bring in better players and make good front office decisions is item one, coach is item two. It doesn’t change anything, the Clippers still, in my opinion, need a better coach.
they were also going to trade Fisher for D Rose
No, it's the Clip Show!
As teams can only offer ONE player a five year deal...
It’s right to assume Kahn is saving this option for Ricky Rubio. It’s utterly bizarre considering Rubio has played for about fifteen minutes, but this is the player Kahn has literally staked his entire career on.
It makes no logical sense, but it’s understandable. Kahn has invested so much in Rubio, he’s willing to alienate Kevin Love.
You have to respect Kahn’s commitment to his vision, no matter how myopic. Right?
Right?!

proves my theory that it's because Love is not a PG
No, it's the Clip Show!
This is also an added benefit for us.
When it comes time to extend Blake, do you think he won’t notice how Love, the guy he’s always judged next to and a similar franchise player, was treated by his own team?
The Clippers will look downright generous/committed/less douchey.
Kahn – the gift that keeps on giving.

I think Chicago is more likely
"It's better to be an optimist who is sometimes wrong than a pessimist who is always right"unknown
OT but not really:
Next year who do we offer the 5 year extension to, Griffin or CP3? Will the other feel slighted that they aren’t getting the 5 year deal and can only sign a 4 year contract?
It's going to Griffin
I’m almost sure of it. But Olshey will assuredly try to lock up CP as best he can. Griffin’s the face.
"Fact One: Races are won or lost in key moments. Fact Two: Success in the sport is, above all else, about enduring suffering." - Chris MacCormack
Yeah it will go to Griffin
Griffin is the younger player and will only be 27 coming off a 5 year deal. You don’t offer CP3 the 5 year deal because he already will be entering his 30’s on a four year deal. So what likely happens is Griffin will get the Rose 5 year maximum deal and CP3 will get the 4 year max. Man imagine if we would have had to try and fit EJ into that equation as well, that would have been a nightmare.
"It's better to be an optimist who is sometimes wrong than a pessimist who is always right"unknown
to get the "Rose" extension
doesn’t he have to a) be an all-star starter for 2 years OR b) win MVP OR c) be first or second all nba team?
He can get the 5 year max extension, but Rose got even more because he won MVP.
Both of them
The only one 5 year deal it’s only for extensions on the rookie deal, you can sign both of them to 5 year deals if i recall correctly.
This.
One player can be designated for a 5 year extension. That’s easily Blake and we will want to do it asap (this summer). Paul has opted into the final year of his contract and will be a free-agent in the summer of 2013. We can offer him a 5 year deal in free-agency, which will secure him the summer of 2018 when he’ll just have turned 33. However, there’s a likelihood that it won’t be 5 years or that there will be an ETO/PO.

Thanks L4e...
I don’t know how often it will happen that a team might have two players coming off their rookie contracts that will deserve or qualify for five year deals. Oklahoma City is one, but since Durant’s deal was made under the old CBA, they could give Westbrook the five year deal now. Oddly enough, and I don’t really understand it, Durant apparently qualified for the 30 percent full raise extension allowed in the new CBA. So both Durant and Westbrook qualify for 30 percent max contracts.
OKC is an interesting team to watch (in regard to the cap) the next few years. They’re gonna have to make decisions about Harden, Ibaka, and Maynor.
Clips will have their own problems but it won’t be two rookie max contracts. They took care of that by getting rid of Eric Gordon, who probably also wanted a max deal.
But the Wolves have NO cap problems and really, none of the horizon. Just when it looked like they figured it out, they reveal that they’re still a rudderless mess.
The 30% raises come from what is being called the Derrick Rose rule.
You have to meet 1 of the following criteria:
2x voted in as an All-Star Starter
2x named to an All-NBA Team
Win an MVP Award
Durant has been voted in as a starter twice (last year & this year), and has been a 2-time All-NBA First Team player so he totally qualifies.
According to Adrian Wojnarowski, Westbrook’s deal is at 25%. Although, he should be named to an All-NBA team again this year. I’m guessing that will bump him up to 30%, but not totally sure.
