Here's the thing

The Hornets have two advantages in signing Gordon. (1) they can offer him 5 years and (2) they can offer him bigger raises. If NOH offers 4 years and less than max money, why wouldn’t he wait? He can get that from them OR get more from a better team next summer. The risk is that he’ll get injured, but of course he’s already injured. So if the fear is that an injury will depress his value, well he can certainly be of the mindset at present that his value is depressed right now, and he’ll do better after he gets to play and be the number one option for a team for three months. Is there a risk that he’ll get hurt worse or play badly? Sure. But if you’re a professional basketball player, you’ve probably got the confidence to say you expect to increase your value, not decrease it.

Of course he didn’t take this deal.

Agreed

And for the same reason, NOH was wise to not offer him more. If they offerred him more, it would be a worse deal then they could have made under the RFA process.

I think the injury is being overlooked.

The fact is, he is missing a pretty good chunk of the season from what seemed to be a minor bump to his knee. If his durability comes to question (which from his history won’t be a surprise) his value is lowered by a large amount. I agree with his decision to look for a little more, especially when the first offer is always a little bit lower than the team is willing to offer, but I side with the Hornets decision. When a young player is already showing signs of injury early on in his career, you can only imagine how he will be in 3-5 years.

I just think Eric wants to do whatever it takes for him to get back home.

I think he would have always prefered Indy

It took him awhile to settle in here, and now in a new city, with a bad team, and struggling contrct extension negotiations… I doubt he staysa Hornet
