Let's face it, the guy is out of shape.
Many of us pointed this out during media day, but the talk was rejected with excuses like "oh, that's just a bad camera angle" ..."oh he looks fine to me, he just gained some mass to hang with the bigger guys"...."that's muscle, he looks ripped!"
As evident in the preseason games, NO, that is not a bad camera angle, NO, that is not muscle mass, that's just lazy baby fat.
He played lethargic, lazy basketball. Sure he made some nice old man plays, but he's definitely not 6th man of the year shape.
Now there's another excuse provided once everyone realized he was a bit out of shape, "oh he typically plays his way into game shape in camp and preseason."
I understand the denial, our franchise "contender" hopes hinge on his performance quite a bit...but...
Don't lie to yourself, that's not what you were hoping, you were hoping he came in tip-top physical condition like he said he would.
He should have played in the Olympics. The year where he played well and stood out as 6th man of the year, was the year he played for Team USA and came in shape.
The number one concern/question mark about him, was his motivation level coming into this season. He did nothing to address them.
Let's make this clear though:
I really hope he gets back into shape and ready to play.
I'm not writing him off, this is not my point.
My point is, I'm extremely disappointed in what has happened so far.
#1 concern was motivation and shape.
- Said he was taking time off from Team USA to get into shape, instead he went to eat candy.
- Came into camp fat
- Playing lazily in scrimmages and preseason so far
He has not kept his word, he has rarely ever kept his word with regards to dedication for his job.
I'm disappointed, but I shouldn't be, it should be expected. This is how it has always been. Not sure why I hoped for more.
