Western Conference Potential Trade Partners

Yesterday we looked at the non-playoff teams out East. Today we will head back to the Western Conference teams that look like they are out of the running already.

Currently the Denver Nuggets and Houston Rockets are tied for the 7th and 8th playoffs spots. Hovering around .500 are the Portland Trailblazers, Utah Jazz and Minnesota Timberwolves. We have to assume these teams will looking to add a piece or two to improve their playoff odds but things can change before the deadline (a Mo Williams and other pieces for Gerald Wallace could make sense for instance).

I'll list their salary for this season so we can see if the Clips have the contracts to match up in a trade scenario. In the comments you can discuss the pros and cons of each available player, what offer to make and other factors. I took out some players that aren't available due to free agency rules or players with great contracts that simply won't be moved for what the Clips can offer.

Keep in mind the Clippers only tangible trade pieces will still be Randy Foye, Ryan Gomes, Eric Bledsoe, Brian Cook, Trey Thompkins andTravis Leslie. Alternatively they have a 3.8 million trade exception they can use. We will work with the assumption that Chris Paul, Blake Griffin, DeAndre Jordan, Caron Butler, Kenyon Martin, Reggie Evans and Mo Williams are not being traded. Chauncey Billups isn't eligible for trade either as an amnestied player.

Portland Trailblazers

Potential Wingmen - Gerald Wallace (10.6 million), Wesley Mathews (6.1 million), Jamal Crawford (5 million)

Utah Jazz

Potential Wingmen - Raja Bell (3.24 million), CJ Miles (3.7 million)

Minnesota Timberwolves

Potential Wingmen - Martell Webster (5.2 million), Wayne Ellington (1.2 million)

Golden State Warriors

Potential Wingmen - Dorell Wright (3.8 million), Brandon Rush (2.9 million)

Phoenix Suns

Potential Wingmen - Jared Dudley (4.25 million), Josh Childress (6 million), Grant Hill (6.5 million)

Sacramento Kings

Potential Wingmen - Marcus Thornton (7.1 million), Francisco Garcia (6.1 million)

New Orleans Hornets

Potential Wingmen - Trevor Ariza (6.8 million), Marco Belinelli (3.4 million)

Not western conference

But I just read that t-Mac is upset with his playing time in Atlanta. I believe he’s on a minimum deal.

We could offer our TPE and he could back up the 2 and 3.

by tons of fun on Feb 19, 2012 10:20 AM PST via mobile reply actions

Probably

Haven’t seen TMac play recently, i know he can still shoot but not sure about his lateral movement on D. I just don’t see ATL making that deal.

by cassellmania on Feb 19, 2012 1:26 PM PST up reply actions

TMAC starting?

If that’s our solution, then an early 1st round exit is sure to come.

I don’t mind him as an 8-9 guy.

The player I can see solidifying a championship potential team...

CJ Miles. He can provide what we need at the 2 and 3. Her has the mental makeup and experience to produce.

If Utah is out of playoff mix by the deadline. . .

They’d entertain offers for CJ. . .isnt he a free agent this summer?

or lets trade for courtney lee or jared dudley

by clips03bg on Feb 19, 2012 1:21 PM PST via Android app reply actions

The toughest thing about this

is that no team will want Gomes’ 2-year deal. We are looking at getting a player for essentially nothing (expiring Foye, TPEs) + some sweetener (Bledsoe, 2nd rounders).

If we trade Foye, we have to get back a starting-caliber sg/sf. Which then means that Gomes remains the backup sf and Mo the backup g.

So try to find a starting-caliber sg/sf, and we can include Foye. If we are looking at a backup wingman, then Foye has to stay.

What starting-caliber wings are available for Foye + Sweetener?

What backup-caliber wings are available for TPE + Sweetener?

Those are the two deals that the Clippers can make.

by LJ Hann on Feb 19, 2012 1:26 PM PST reply actions

Hard to tell who's going to be available by the trade deadline

But there will be lots of options for sure. There’s still a chance that Olshey signs one of the workout participants from friday to 10-day, and I read he might after the allstar break. If that player ended up playing well, it would make Foye more expendable. Who knows, but I can tell you this- no way we go into the playoffs with Gomes as the only backup SG/SF.

by cassellmania on Feb 19, 2012 1:32 PM PST up reply actions

You are assuming that Foye is a starting-caliber wing

When he’s really a backup-caliber wing. So I think you can send out Foye + Sweetener for a better backup-caliber wing. Even if it’s a lateral skill level, if we get a guy who can defend/rebound, that’s better than a guy like Foye who takes possessions away from the efficient scorers.

All I'm saying

is that people need to realize that right now, Foye is our starter. If you trade Foye for TMac, then you pretty much have to start TMac. You don’t want to start Tmac

by LJ Hann on Feb 19, 2012 2:09 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah

It might be dumb to waste trade assets for a minor upgrade to Foye. We need a real starter, plain and simple.

I met my girlfriend through 800LoanMart but had to return her with interest.

by PV Mike on Feb 19, 2012 1:34 PM PST reply actions

That's a fairly safe prediction

Foye will only go out if NO gets a starting sg/sf in return.

Nobody wants Gomes on a minimum deal, so why would they take him on 8mil/2yr.

by LJ Hann on Feb 19, 2012 1:39 PM PST up reply actions

Gomes is going to stay this year

it makes no sense to trade him, because would have to add some sweetener or take on some crappy contract. After this season I’m guessing the team will amnesty him because he is the only deal that we can amnesty that makes sense.

I’m quite sure he’ll be picked up by an NBA team at a minimum deal. His confidence is shot but some team will see his before Clippers stats and will take a gamble. And as long as you play him at the 4 he’ll be productive as an end of the rotation player. What you see is the Peter principle: Gomes has been semi-productive before the Clips and the Clippers hoped he’d take that extra step.

no reason to use the amnest after thui season

Only 2 years in his deal would be an expiring, unless the cap space is needed in the offseason.

by XXDC2XX on Feb 20, 2012 9:10 AM PST up reply actions

he is the only one left to where it makes sense to use it

foye and cook will be gone at the end of the season. Bledsoe and Griffin are the only other players left that qualify but I don’t see that happening. I think the extra 4M would put us under the max cap and would put lux tax at a safe distance.

Dorell Wright

Is a perfect fit with one of our trade exceptions. Trade future 1st round and trade exception for Dorell Wright? I think that should be enough to get GSW to bite.

by Rob Lo on Feb 19, 2012 2:48 PM PST reply actions

Here it is

Clippers are owed:
TWolves 1st 2012(retraded),
Memphis 2nd 2015,
Hornets 2nd 2015;

And owe:
Clippers 1st 2012 to Boston;
TWolves 1st 2012 to Hornets,
Clippes 2nd 2013 to Detroit,
Clippers 2nd 2014 to San Antonio,
Clippers 2nd 2015 to Houston/Denver (pending on where it is),
Clippers 2nd 2016 to Hornets,

The 2nd rounders to Detroit, San Antonio, Denver, New Orleands are top 55 protected.
The 2nd rounder to Houston is 51-55.

Because you can’t trde consecutive 1sts, the Clips would have to trade the 2014 first. But, the fine print complicates things

2012 first round draft pick to Boston
The Los Angeles Clippers’ own 2012 first round draft pick to Boston via Oklahoma City (top 10 protected in the 2012 draft, top 10 protected in 2013, top 10 protected in 2014, top 10 protected in 2015 and unprotected in the 2016 Draft). In addition, if the Los Angeles Clippers are required to send their 2012 first round pick pursuant to the above and are also entitled to receive Minnesota’s own 2012 first round draft, then Boston via Oklahoma City shall receive the lesser of the Los Angeles Clippers’ own 2012 first round pick and Minnesota’s own 2012 first round pick. [L.A. Clippers -Oklahoma City, 6/24/2010 and then Boston – Oklahoma City, 2/24/2011]
2012 first round draft pick to New Orleans
The Los Angeles Clippers trade the more favorable of the Los Angeles Clippers’ own 2012 1st round pick and Minnesota’s own 2012 1st round pick to New Orleans. [Los Angeles Clippers – New Orleans, 12/14/2011]

Potentially, the 2014 pick could be abailable. But, because of the protections on the Boston pick (could last until 2016), the soonest that the Clippers can trade a pick is 2018 (they have already “traded” the 2016 pick, even though it will never actually be Boston’s).

how about Corey Brewer @ $3M from Denver

athletic, big wing player, superb defender, wont take shots away from others

and no one has said Marcus Thornton yet...

I heard CP3 loves this guy. He played with him in NOLA. We all know about him because heck, he puts up 25 a game against us or something… Why not him? Foye+Leslie for Thornton straight up. Good defender, streaky scorer, team guy. Is that not what we’re looking for here? And with Leslie and Foye’s contracts, we can throw in cash considerations and its a salary swap… Someone tel me where Im wrong here…

Jeremy Stearn- Keith Closs for Prez!

Thornton is better than Foye

but it would be nice to get someone that is at least bigger with talent being equal or greater

i didnt check the stats but i believe they are about the same size…so in theory it would just be Leslie and Foye for a slightly better and younger version of Foye

Would Phoenix be interested in Bledsoe as Nash’s successor? Would love to see Dudley and Caron as the starting wings.
