Working the NBA Trade Machine

Bill Simmons posted a three team trade on FB including the Lakers, Rockets and Sixers that wasn't too great. But it got me to thinking. If the Lakers are so bent on trading Pau Gasol.....and the Rockets covet him so much...who's to say that the Clips can't be the third team in and make a trade to fill the gaping hole at the 2? I post this knowing several things:

1. I'm sure the Lakers and Clippers would rather trade with Iraq than with each other.

2. Looking this trade over, I think it fills needs for every team. But it may give the Lakers a slight advantage. Let me explain my rationale after I give you the particulars.

3. The Clips would be getting a guy that probably hates them and while a Dbag, he's one of those "love him if he's on our team" types.

The Lakers get: Luis Scola and Mo Williams

The Rockets get: Pau Gasol and Ryan Gomes (I put Gomes strictly for the numbers to add up, they could take Foye or even Cook and it would work)

The Clippers get Kevin Martin and Matt Barnes

The Clippers lineup would look like this

PG - Paul, Foye, Bledsoe

SG - Kevin Martin, Foye, Leslie

SF - Butler, Barnes, Thompkins

PF - Griffin, Kenyon Martin, Evans

C - Jordan, Evans, Cook

The starting five would be lights out. The problem may be offense in the second unit, but Bledsoe, Foye, Barnes, Evans and Kenyon, that would be an attacking lock down unit.

The Rockets have already traded about Martin and Scola for Gasol. The Lakers would get a PG and a replacement for Gasol. I think it could be a great deal all the way around.

I don’t get all this Pau to Rockets talk, i thought that was only in the summer when Houston wanted to pair Gasol with Nene. Now that thats off the table, i don’t get why they would do this.

Also, I’m just not comfortable AT ALL with a trade that enhances the Lakers. With Mo and Scola they become legit title contenders again and much as Martin is a good 2 guard, losing our 6th man makes this, to me, a little more than a lateral move for the Clips. I guess i’m also just not sold on Martin with his awful defense and frequent injury.

by cassellmania on Feb 20, 2012 12:49 AM PST reply actions

If you hate the Lakers

then you should LOVE this trade. The drop off from Gasol to Scola is tremendous and Mo has really cooled off lately. A starting lineup of Kobe, Mo, Bynum, Scola and um Artest shouldn’t scare anyone.

I beg to differ

They may not win a title, but Mo could revitalize his career with wide open looks in the starting lineup. And again- I’m not very high on Kevin Martin. If they included Budinger in the trade i would like it better.

Kevin Martin = EJ with less defense

But EJ was never a great team defender, only a good individual one. Martin obviously isn’t going to be a stopper, but with Barnes you have that guy when you need him. I actually like this trade a lot. But Simmons’ dreams almost never materialize…

Thats my problem with Martin

To me EJ was a champion caliber 2 guard because he played on both sides of the court. Martin can score but he’s very injury prone (and not that young by the way) and i feel like on this team we don’t need another 20ppg guy in the starting lineup. Someone who can score 12-15ppg and play D is a better fit, like Jared Dudley. But that’s just my opinion.

by cassellmania on Feb 20, 2012 12:31 PM PST up reply actions

Martin's pretty efficient

only shoots 14 times per game. Which is only 1-2 shots more than Foye does per 36 minutes.

And we are talking about trading Mo Williams (definitely not a defensive stopper to begin with much less a guard who can guard 2s).

Help us Altered Beast you're our only hope.

Let's all remember

Between E.Gordon and K.Martin, only one player actually gets on the court :)

by UC.Clipper on Feb 20, 2012 2:18 PM PST up reply actions

What's happening in CN with the Gordon attacks

Maybe attacks is the wrong term but that seems like an unecessary shot at EJ and lately there seem to be a lot of those about EJ’s injuries.

He got heat from local fans a couple weeks ago tweeting

about how excting a Syracuse game was on TV that was happening the same night the Hornets were playing.

I met my girlfriend through 800LoanMart but had to return her with interest.

Love the orange!! Also EJ is good too

by LJ Hann on Feb 20, 2012 3:23 PM PST up reply actions

Uh, have you seen martin's injury history?

Half his time in the NBA has been spent on the bench nursing season ending injuries.

by cassellmania on Feb 20, 2012 4:36 PM PST up reply actions

He's not that injury prone

he had a 2-3 year stretch where he missed some games but they weren’t serious injuries. He has Kaman-like injuries like bad ankle sprains or groin injuries that keep him out for 15 games at a time.

Help us Altered Beast you're our only hope.

by ClipperChuck on Feb 20, 2012 5:46 PM PST up reply actions

I get that Martin is a good scorer

I’d just rather have a guy who plays D as well

by cassellmania on Feb 20, 2012 2:45 PM PST up reply actions

plus he would fit perfectly in our offense

his off the ball game is amazing, and along Chris and Blake he would have a ton of open looks.

by paris clips man on Feb 21, 2012 8:09 AM PST up reply actions

Simmons didn't make this trade, I did.

Simmons trade was Lakers get Rondo + Elton Brand, Celtics get Evan Turner, Nikola Vukevic and Nocioni’s expiring, Sixers get Pau Gasol, Brandon Bass and Derek Fisher.

Which I thought was ridiculous.

He's actually pretty good

especially for the price. He’d be a nice bench player. This would be a great trade for the Clips (though it would have to be Foye and not Gomes in the deal).

Because Foye is a negative in the starting lineup

And Martin is 20ppg in the starting lineup. You could move him to the bench and start Barnes as a defensive guy, finishing the game with Martin (like we do with Foye / Mo). This is an upward move because if Martin = Mo, Barnes > Foye/Gomes/Cook.

Why don't we just ask Houston for...

Terrence Willams and be done with it all. The guy was a lotto pick two years ago and did very well his first year. Then the next year played a handful of games here and there, was traded from Jersey to Houston, were he suddenly got theq same thing, a handful of games. I dont get
all of that. He is young , super athletic and very talented. He can play the two and three can score and play defense.

Was the guy in the dog house with but teams, because thats the only thing I can see and her could be had for cheap.

Terrence Williams is a very talented offensive player

but there is something definately wrong there as he’s sat on the bench in both places he’s played when he really could help the team. And, no-one is really coming in for him. Not a good sign.

And with the 12th pick in the 2005 NBA draft, the LA Clippers pick Yaroslav "Dogs Dinner" Korolev

maybe CP3 will solve his problems?

if that happens and with Billups and Martin making sure there isnt any problems off the court…T-Will could be a good bench guy for us

and Reggie can always scare him straight

I believe he could replicate the same level of production as JR Smith would have, with the same athleticism.

If it included budinger or lee from the rockets instead of Barnes. Not a bad deal all the way around, but still I’d hope we wouldn’t have to give up Mo to get a true SG

Really don't want Barnes

If only we could get any other cap filler instead but this is a great deal for us and it also makes the Lakers weaker, Mo is not a great fit with them and Martin is really good.

then Gomes off the Clippers…i was a little okay…

then Barnes to the Clippers………………………………………………………………………………BAD TRADE

I've already talk about a three teams deal that would send Mo to the fakers and get us Martin

but man, if we could do that plus getting rid of Gomes and get some depth at the wing, I’d call Olshey a genius!

The Celtics need to blow it up.

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=826temb

We get Pierce. Presumably, Tuff Juice would come off the bench. Either way, LIGHTYEARS better than Gomes getting significant minutes.

Boston gets Mo (who’s still pretty young and can continue his sixth man role, then later on, act as a veteran presence on a younger Celtics squad), Gomes (local product, familiar with Doc’s system), and Cook (expiring contract). Not necessarily an ideal haul, but the Celtics should tank now anyway. It’s clear that the current roster is past its prime and spinning its wheels aimlessly.

surely they could get a better package from a team like Minny, who needs wing scoring.

anyways, Caron would start at the 2

I don’t get all these people so quick to trade Mo, he’s a great 6th man- something you need to go deep in the playoffs. I do like the idea of sliding Caron to the 2 and getting another SF to start. Would love to somehow pry Dudley form the Suns, maybe by the deadline they’d take Bled+another player for Dudley, with Bled getting more minutes as Nash’s backup and successor. Dudley and Butler would be a killer wing duo.

by cassellmania on Feb 20, 2012 4:43 PM PST up reply actions

Stephen Jackson and Shaun Livingston for Randy Foye and Ryan Gomes

http://espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=899g8gq

The Bucks would throw in Livingston as a filler to take on Stephen Jackson’s contract. So basically the Clippers would be getting to the two best players in the trade…

New starting five:

Jordan/Griffin/Butler/Jackson/CP3

Sixth man: Shaun Livingston, who can slide to the 1, 2, 3, positions…
