LA Times: Clippers set sights on signing J.R. Smith
The Los Angeles Times is reporting tonight that the Los Angeles Clippers are setting their sights on JR Smith.
Smith can return to the NBA after his team in China finishes its season. The Clippers hope he can bring scoring punch as backup small forward, says a person with knowledge of the situation.
I know that Citizen SurfinQ000 posted a fan shot pointing to an article indicating that JR Smith would sign with Los Angeles Lakers. But it seems that the Times appears to contradict such report from BlogNBAsketball.
How do the Clippers plan to attract JR Smith?
But the Clippers like their chances because Smith played withChris Paul in New Orleans and with Chauncey Billups and Martin in Denver.

Could be possible
that when everything begins to mold and settle, Smith would take the starting SG slot and that would move Billups and Williams to small combo guards?
Doesn’t matter anyway, if Smith comes, the bench looks alot beter..
Mo, Smith, Martin, Evans, Gomes.
Plus even if Gomes looks’ like a weak link, there should be enough scoring as is. Gomes and Evans can be primarily used to play defense

If we get him
I don’t see how we aren’t championship contenders, or even favorites. I mean, clippers would have Paul, Billups, Butler, Griffin, Jordan, Williams, Bledsoe, Foye, Smith, Gomes, Evans, and Martin- who in the NBA has a better 1-12? All of these players have been starters in this league, with the exception being Bledsoe, who is young and talented and will likely be a starter during his career.
That said, I don’t like JR Smith’s character.
With the amount of veteran leadership on this team...
I think they can keep JR on the straight and narrow. Winning will help too.

I don't know
there is a difference between a crazy on the court guy, like Marting or Evans, and a crazy off the court guy, like Smith… I think he got into a drunk driving acident and killed a friend once. Dude has 20-something points on his licence.
Well
I think that is a risk we should take. I know he isn’t the best character guy, but I think he would come here knowing full well that he isn’t the star and if he acts up, well we can just send him home and wait out his smaller contract or even try to throw him into a trade.
He also dropped 60 points in 3 quarters in the CBA playoffs.
I’ll take the risk, especially since Jr smith has some size (6’6).

I am a little worried about the Clippers signing all these guys...
Suddenly the Clippers is THAT team that everybody wants to be on… getting extra firepower on the bench is nice but I’m worried JR won’t mesh with the rest of the club and become a cancer… he’ll also be taking away shots from Mo and I don’t know if Mo will be okay with that… there’ll be pros and cons but I wouldn’t be too sad about it if we lose out on him
+1
I think we have enough toughness now with the addition of Kenyon Martin. JR Smith is not worth the risk. I think we need a defensive specialist on the wing now more than anything else. We need a defensive stopper, not a ball stopper.

we need more scoring period
With JR ar SF at 6’7 who is not a terrible defender at all we can then look to get a SG with little more bulk at the two who can hit open shots if not we just run out Williams, Foye and Smith. Even with Martin we need one more scoring threat off the bench because Foye is inconsistent and Gomes is a non factor

LOL
JR is a SG, has been his whole career. ESPN has him at 6’6", and I’m pretty sure he is only 6’5".
Still would make him the tallest of the guards if I'm not mistaken
Would make him guard a SF by default I would imagine in a 3-guard lineup.
When you're playing on a team with Carmello you aren't going to be playing SF
He’s tall enough to play SF… he’s about the same height as MWP. Metta is bulkier, but he’s bulkier than other SFs like Tayshaun Prince. Also if he’s not starting he would be playing against the second unit so not that big a problem.
I think that JR could play SF
but he is a SG. Same with Foye. MWP is 2 or 3 inches taller than JR and 40 pounds heavier. While Prince weighs as much as JR, he is a good 4 inches taller (and much longer).
JR can play SF, but he isn’t a true forward.
Aren't the Lakers going to sign him ??
Stealing him from them would be nice.
Nuggets 2.0? How about Wilson Chandler
Not sure about this. Chemistry is a fragile thing. JR Smith has a reputation for bone-headed decisions on the court, plus he’s not exactly a “good character guy”.
They really should be taking a look at the other ex-Nuggets SF in China, Wilson Chandler; but he may be too pricey for the Clip’s tastes. He appears to be more mature than JR Smith and is similar is skill set. Like some other Clips fans, Chemistry might be altered. As the Lakers found out in 2004, you can’t randomly assemble a bunch of talent and not consider Chemistry.
It’s also Amazing Andrei Kirilenko is still unsigned. Travis Leslie would be on his way out if they do sign someone else.

I think we need to clear up some space before we think he is coming here.
If he is willing to sign a contact in china with no opt out part of his contract, then I’m sure money means a lot. Yes, Kenyon did the same, but we actually offered Kenyon a pretty nice contract with the MLE.

A comment posted on the Times but this person makes some sense...
Be careful Clippers. You have nice chemistry in the locker room so far, but you’re bringing in a thug in Kenyon Martin and a true mental case thug in JR Smith. There’s a reason these losers were playing in China. I can see both of these idiots messing up Coron Butler, who’s already prone to making legal mistakes anyway. Be careful.

How much can they really offer him? The LA Time article cites a mini-mid.
The current cap figure sits at around $57M, which leaves them only the veteran minimum to sign Smith to put them right up at the salary cap.
It makes me wonder if they would consider the possibility of going into luxury tax territory to get Smith’s services and keep him away from other contenders like Chicago, who’s looking into a more durable replacement for Rip Hamilton.
Does waiving Solomon Jones and his non-guaranteed contract do anything for us?

I meant to reply to your post.
I don’t think Jones’ non-guaranteed contract impacts their cap number at all.
I got my figures from hoopshype, but even their info is incomplete. They don’t even have Caron’s salary listed.
The Clippers are already over the cap...
They will be around 65.4M with the signing of Martin. The luxury tax will probably be around 70M.
They do have a couple of trade exceptions but that won’t help them with Smith. It’s either the minimum or nothing for him.
I don't think Jones' non-guaranteed contract impacts their cap number at all.
I got my figures from hoopshype, but even their info is incomplete. They don’t even have Caron’s salary listed.
If we get JR Smith, we have the firepower needed to win the West. It’s that simple.
Paul – Billups – Butler – Griffin – Jordan with Mo – Foye – Smith – Martin – Evans. I like that in the playoffs.
Cook has a guaranteed contract.
VDN would just give him DNPs.
Most likely, we will waive Leslie and/or Jones.
Leslie is still a rookie
the clips have 15 right now. They will release Jones as soon as KMart can play to free up a spot. Leslie is safe.
We don't need a guard
what would be the point of signing Ahearn? He wouldn’t be activated unless there was an injury. I think the Clippers have shown that Courtney Fortson is their go-to guard in the DLeague anyways.
JR is a scoring machine
but this is not a simple decision as its not just us signing JR.
it also means we need to get rid of someone on our current squad
and unfortunately we may lose Solomon Jones who can develop into a Mozgov big body that we need
i don’t think we can afford to lose Brian Cookie Crumbs as he is a lot more valuable than people on Clipsnation thinks
i have heard a lot of positive things about his leadership in the locker room and it is documented by a another poster that had management quoting Cookie Crumbs amazing 3 pt shooting and how he could not mix in practice. In due time, we will be reaping the rewards of Cookie Crumbs
Clip Clip Hooray!
yeah it would suck to lose a player that has 7 field goals
and shooting 17%
Notice Solomon Jones didn't play last night? Even in garbage time.
He’s gone. He’s 28, he’s been in the NBA a while, and he hasn’t turned into anything relevant.
Everything changes on Feb 10 when contracts become guaranteed. I expect the Clips will cut Jones on Monday or whenever Martin’s signed, then cut Leslie or Thompkins before the tenth, and perhaps re-sign them (or him) to a ten day contract and see if they can bring in a wing later on… be it Smith or someone else.
If the Clippers LOVE Jones (and I don’t think they do), they could do the same with him, string him back on ten-days.
Cook has little value, except his contract is guaranteed, so he’s a sunk cost, not worth cutting.
plus if this regressing to the mean thing is real
we are in for some serious Cookie Crumbs for the rest of the season

Honestly, I would hope to keep Leslie and Thompkins.....
Leslie gets no playing time and Thompkins has a lot potential. Leslie is a solid defender and he can finish plays. Thompkins is a great rebounder, and I believe his shooting is going to become solid soon enough.
There's no way Clippers cut the rookies.
Gomes, Cook and Jones would be out before it comes to that.
don't be so sure
Lots of second round picks don’t make it in the league. If they are not convinced of them they will let them go.

Well is all begins when a user selects either fan post or fan shot. If fan post is selected then it is a fan post. On the other hand if the user selects fan shot then you probably have guess it by now it would be a fan shot.
I believe he was inquiring as to why
LovingLosAngeles chose to make it a fanpost and not a fanshot, because it seems like it should be a fanshot. There is a difference between the two.
Fanshot is meant for information and articles (which this falls under)
a fanpost is meant for opinion, discussion, or abstract posts.
"It's better to be an optimist who is sometimes wrong than a pessimist who is always right"unknown
Right. It should have been a fanshot.
Not a big deal. I’m a rules guy. Putting stuff in the wrong place offends my sense of order. My office is a mess but I put fanshots in the correct place.
Guys, JR is not a child
He knows that he will need to improve his attitude. And this is the best opportunity of this life, championship-wise, he really barely had a choice for a ring before. He would be completely idiotic to mess up this time. Sign him! I can’t stand Gomes!!
Make sure not to drive with him

He spent six years in the NBA and has shown no willingness to change.
What makes you think he will be different on the Clips?
Same was said about Zbo, and he got passed around to a lot of teams before hitting his stride in Memphis
Chris Anderson was suspended (or was he in jail?) for a year for drug charges… when he came back he was solid for Denver. Rasheed Wallace in Detroit., MWP in SAC/HOU; people are capable of change in the right environment. You got to remember that most these guys are in the mid-20s (around my own age). A lot of maturing still happens at that age. LeBron James, for example, has matured tremendously from last year. I think playing in China and that experience could have been J.R. and possibly humbled him? Who knows. If it’s a 1 yr deal I think it’s a risk that would be worth it to take.
Yes, exactly
Who would you rather have on the bench for a contender?
Ryan Gomes or J.R. Smith?
Seriously, if you took Gomes, then you do not watch NBA basketball.
Chemistry issue
I don’t know how much of an issue it will be if you consider that we have three players on this team that have played with Smith. Two of them being the most important in terms of leadership. Paul and Billups. If those two feel like we can absorb Smith then we should do it.
I have a feeling we won't be getting Smith.
It seems that other teams will really be pursuing him for his scoring ability; apparently the Knicks are going to be extremely aggressive with him, and yes, we can offer him a contending spot in the playoffs and a good amount of time off the bench, but we don’t have one thing, money. For us to consider him signing here for a veteran’s minimum is a little bit out there once you take a step back; he took a job to play in China and he didn’t sign any opt out kind of clause, and I’m sure that gave him a little extra money. I would like to get him, but I think it is kind of wishful thinking at this point.
The Knicks make me laugh...
They’ve got the biggest ball-stopper on the planet, so what they think they need is the second-biggest ball-stopper on the planet. Meanwhile they’re patiently waiting for Baron Davis to lead them to the promised land. As an organization, they’re delusional.

Jk. Yeah, he is a bad character and such, but if he did sign, it would be for veteran’s minimum and only 1 year. If he proves to be stable with us and we can get a ring, I would be ecstatic.
That makes me less than ecstatic
A guy with character issues getting paid the minimum (and less than his value)? That sounds like a recipe for more character issues.
one way to look at it
he could be one of those “you are only paying me this much so I will only give this amount of effort in return”. Or he could know that being a key member of a contender can get him back into the good graces of the rest of the league and help secure him another sizeable long term deal.
Pretty easy JR, play hard for 2-3 months, stay out of trouble, win some playoff games and you’ll make $25 million dollars.

But if JR has the wisdom to make that connection and implement it into his life, why has he not done that yet? I’m not convinced he has demonstrated the ability to learn those lessons.
Well he only has to fake it for 2-3 months
maybe his agent can get him to understand. He probably needs the money so maybe he won’t mess up.

I have told this story
it amazes me how many people don’t even care. I could understand someone saying that we should get him anyway, but most people on here don’t realize how terrible he is.
I know this story.
And I am in favor of getting him. True, he is a terrible person and I am in no way advocating his actions off the court. At the end of the day, this is a business and the way you play on the court is heavily weighted. I think there are players throughout this league who hold baggage, nowhere near this of course, but you still have to take into consideration that he can put this Clipper team on top.
He had e talent to start in Denver
But was too much of a knucklehead.
"[Fans are] not technically a lot of times savvy. They don't understand and they don't weigh issues the way that [I] weigh them."
Mike Dunleavy, Sr.
I agree with you
but I am so torn. I mean, can you see how good we would be?
On the other hand, I have said all along that he is a terrible person. Not a hothead on the court, but a criminal off it.
by that I mean
He is a hothead on the court, but that isn’t what scares me off. His run-ins with the law are what suprises me.
You shouldn't be torn, LJ...
You might not want him for moral reasons, like Bolts, but you probably don’t want him for basketball reasons either. He’s a notorious lazy defender, and he’s never seen a shot he didn’t like. That’s not what the Clips need! They need a defensive wing who can score a bit, not Carmelo Junior.
We need someone who can score of the bench and someone that can backup Butler.
A defensive wing would be nice, but as long as Billups, Williams, and Butler are around they would be coming off the bench and the lack of scoring from the bench is already a liability. Adding another defensive player would put more pressure on Mo Williams to shoot.
Do you believe we cross some sort of line if we sign him?
I don’t. We need to win if we want to keep Paul and Griffin. If we sign him for one year, and we are successful, then I think Paul would sign an extension. From there, if JR hurts the team more than he should, let him walk and look for another player, one of better character. With how significant Billups and Martin will be to this team, we will have to start looking for new players sooner or later, but if we can keep the good ones we have, our job will be much easier.
Um it was JR going through a red light at a high rate of speed that killed him

Paul isn't going anywhere
We are already legit contenders. Paul is locked in for another season, and definitely won’t sign an extension next offseason because the new CBA rules mean he’d be leaving money on the table. Signing this criminal for half of this season won’t have any impact on whether or not CP3 resigns with us 2 offseasons from now.
Proudly enduring the pain since the days of Bill Walton's foot.

It can.
Let’s say we sign him and we get to the championships, I think that will really add to Paul’s view of this team. Now if we don’t sign him and we are burnt in the 2nd round, then that hurts our chances of keeping Paul. Frankly, I don’t see us as “legit contenders” until I see K-Mart play. Our bigs are both unexperienced in terms of playoff games, so I expect their numbers to dip a little bit (foul trouble will most likely get them seated early) and we need their help. A strong bench is vital in the playoffs, and I just don’t think our team has that as of now. I think we need 1 more person (a REAL SG or wing defender) to push us into real contention.
I think we're good enough to compete without him
And there will probably be other guys available later in the season when non-contenders start offering buyouts to veterans. I’d much rather see this knucklehead screw up some other team’s locker room and wait to see if we can pick up a solid vet who wants to chase a ring later in the season.
Proudly enduring the pain since the days of Bill Walton's foot.

I don't think any free agents will appear later on
The choice is probably Smith or no Smith. And ultimately I have to say no Smith. But it’s close. And I don’t think I would be mad if he was signed, just worried. Hopefull he goes to the Lakers and messes it up with Kobe. Or he can go to NYK and not make the playoffs.
Why not?
It happens every year. We just haven’t noticed because these guys choose among a handful of contenders, and we’ve never been one of them.

OK
Did some research, here are some FA wingmen avail right now:
Chris Douglas Roberts
Jamario Moon
Sonny Weems
Al Thornton
Those seem to be the best 4.
I wish we had Bogans.
I know he signed with the Nets a little while ago for like $600,000!! That seemed solid to me! Also, I would want Moon or Thornton (the pass Clippers) out of those guys. But honestly, I think we can gain so much more by trading Bledsoe and or Foye. But I suppose Bledsoe is a safety net in case Williams and Billups both walk.
I think Bledsoe is safe
for your reasons. I don’t think Foye is worth much except as a expiring, and I don’t really want to take back a worse contract. I think CDR is the best SF up there.
Morrow.
Take this with a grain of salt, but there was someone on here that said the Nets were looking to move Morrow for expiring contracts. If this is true, Foye fits perfectly for them.
The contracts match
Morrow is making 4mil this year, 4 mil next year. Foye is making 4.25 this year. I mean, if the Nets are willing, why not?
Seems a little too good to be true.
Morrow would be nice. Hopefully he's healthy.
Incredible long range shooter. Not sure about his defense.
Don't care who's available now
That wasn’t at all my point. My point (as I thought I stated clearly above) is that every year, near the deadline for when players have to be on a roster to be eligible for the playoffs, noncontending teams arrange buyouts with veterans that they have no future plans for. This saves the noncontending teams some cash and allows the players to hook up with playoff teams on minimum deals. I’d rather gamble that someone will become available via that route later than sign up this convict now.
Proudly enduring the pain since the days of Bill Walton's foot.

I really hope we don't get him. We are already taking on Martin..that's enough.

I know that I for one have never killed my best friend while driving drunk
Going 67 in a 35 zone. I just… How do you do that?
And how do you have so little remorse as to get 2 speeding tickets between killing your friend and your trial?
He hasn’t “made mistakes”. He is a disgusting human who does not deserve to make millions of dollars.
His friend wasn't wearing a seat belt
Going 67 in a 35? I’ve done it when I was younger. It’s not hard at all to do. Was it a smart thing to do? No. But I was young and stupid. You are calling him a disgusting human when you have never even met the guy. That’s a lot of hate and you don’t know that he doesn’t have remorse over his actions.
(Also like to add his friend wasn’t wearing a seat belt so it’s not like it was all J.R.’s fault… his friend is easily as culpable for his own death)
The real question is why did he still have his drivers licence after amassing 25 points on his record? People get their licence suspend 1-2 years for a single DUI (which is what like 2 points?). If had the equivalent of 12.5 DUI worth of points on his record why the hell does he have a motor vehicle licence??
Well...
you don’t know that he doesn’t have remorse over his actions
I’d say the fact that he got 2 more speeding tickets between the accident and his trial is a pretty clear indication that he didn’t have a shred of remorse. As I always say to my 12-year-old, “Saying you’re sorry doesn’t mean you’re really sorry. Showing me with your actions is how I know you’re really sorry.”
Proudly enduring the pain since the days of Bill Walton's foot.

no
But if your going to speak on people’s faults…be accurate…no body’s perfect…
Um, look at the whole story.
He killed his friend going nearly twice the speed limit and then getting 2 tickets before he even goes to trial? And you point out that he wasn’t drunk? Sorry, but you should look at the moral of the story, he is a bad guy and to say that he has made mistakes is an understatement.
if u think
I don’t “get it” then I don’t know what to tell u…JR may a a lil bi-polar or somethin Idk. But I do know he can help us and Chauncey and Chris will maximize his usage and keep him on the right path even Blake and DJ too…u wouldn’t take JR, then u r poor @ making businesses decisions…the Lakers would take him without second thought even though he’s a calculated risk…Show me one championship team without a headcase or a knuckle head…Sterling get it done…

Seriously. People survive crashes at that speed all the time. Especially people that wear seat belts.
If he was wearing a seat belt he would have probably walked away from the crash. Especially given that his friend died from a head trauma.
that makes it even worse
he was consciously going 67 in a 35 zone? While paying attention? No excuses? Come on now.

Somethin stuck in yo ass, and u seem a lil dare I say the “R” word…we don’t have to agree but everyone is not like u. We all did come from you perfect upbringing. One of the worst feelings in life is probably to be responsible for the death of a loved one and u know its your fault…he has to live with that…so what? U wanna see him in jail? Since when has jail solved anybody’s problems??? U ain’t perfect man…

Having a perfect upbringing doesn't mean having morals
Trust me, I know people who have had every opportunity they could have ever wanted, and blew it. And there are people who have nothing, and are still amazing people.
Sometimes having it worse makes you more appreciative of what you do have.
You are crucifying the guy without even really knowing him. You've already decided that he is no good and incapable of change.
If going 67 in a 35 makes you a morally dead person, then… I don’t know what to say that… You don’t really even know the complete story, just tidbits from the media. This happened in 2009 it’s been 3 years and he’s served 30 days in jail for his crime.
You're right, going 67 in a 35 doesn't doesn't make you a morally dead person
But what does is killing your friend while doing it, and then doing the same exact thing that killed your friend repeatedly in the months right after.

yes, my 'perfect upbringing'
because you know me.
Sometimes there is nothing you can do, and someone dies. But how easy is it to avoid going double the speed limit? pretty easy. And you talk as though he is so depressed about being responsible… he got two more speeding tickets in between the incident and his trial.
so what's your point...
If we get him and win it all and he shows maturity don’t praise him later, I understand where your coming from but a lot of these players end up turning it around later in life like Z BO. Who’s to say he wont? U r way too perfect and judgemental…
Outside of maybe G.Areanas
I’m guessing if JR isn’t one to generate skepticism for reform, then who?
At this point, let's wait and see what CP3 and Chauncey have to say about JR. They
know the guy well.

i agree
And I think he can put us over the top…
Now I am sure that if CP3 and Chauncey say, "no go" on JR, the Front Office will
not make a move.

I see him going to the Knicks
can offer more money and a starting gig. JR Smith isn’t a ring chasing vet yet.

JR and Cameltoe wont work with STAT shooting everything...
We are his best bet…
I'm not seeing it
If we didn’t have mo, I would get it but now… ?

I haven't seen him play much,
Does JR need the ball in his hands a lot? Is he capable of being a catch and shoot person?
He is a ball dominator
ball stopper, whatever you call it. He needs to pound the rock into the floor to be effective.
Mo and JR Smith together in the second unit
the three other players can just wait at our half to set defence.

While that would add offense
Inevitably the team mixes first and second units together; if JR played exclusively with only “second tier” players on the team, his playing time would dive a lot; even R.Foye sometimes plays with the first unit if I’m not mistaken.
Much to do about nothing
I don’t seem him taking a min contract to play with us. I see him signing with the Knicks. They can offer more money and, miraculous resurrection of Baron Davis aside, becomes their best guard.

Is it just me
Or would Randy Foye not just stand around if all of a sudden he lost all of his playing time, especially to someone who would most likely be a jerk in the lockerroom?
Actually I think both guys would play almost 0 minutes
at least assuming everyone else is healthy.

Yes
Foye and Gomes would only play if there were injuries, early foul trouble or the game was a blowout.

No problem signing him
If he was a key building block for the Clips then I’d be more concerned but considering he’s going to be making the minimum, trying to get his next contract and CP3 and Billups would be giving their blessings then its a fairly low-risk high-reward transaction. If he does something stupid again they can just cut him and go back to saying they only want “character” guys again. Clearly he knows he’s playing for millions of dollar this spring so he should be on his best behavior.

Only because he hasn't done it to our team
Who would you rather see dating your sister/daughter?
I don't know Miller is liable to shove her through a wall
because she “had it coming” after shoving him a little earlier in the day.
