What to do at SG

With Billups injuring his Achilles, he'll be out for a while. If its torn, he's probably out for the year. Good thing we have a lot of guards, although they're mostly PG's. While I wasnt hoping for JR Smith, I am now. Our depth just took a shot. Who starts now? Foye? Mo? EBled? Whats happened to Bledsoe by the way? I personally think we have to start Mo next to CP3. Get the top team out there in the starting lineup. If Bledsoe proves he's heatlhy, I think Foye and Bledsoe will again be a solid duo on the second team. I think we're clearly relying more on Foye to become a more solid scorer

Foye should start for now

Meanwhile, FO needs to look for an SG or SF (Butler sliding down to off guard) with those trade exceptions.

For now, Foye starts. We need Mo as bench spark.

But there is no doubt Olshey should push hard for JR. I know many on here are appalled by JR’s off court issues etc, but the fact is, he is a really good player on the court. At only 26 he’s a 6-6 athlete who can shoot, pass (yes, its true) and a former team mate of CP, Billups and Kenyon. If those guys give the OK, im all for it. The vets will keep him in check and he’s the kind of guy that can explode for 30 on any given night. What are our other options? Trade Bled/picks for who? If guys like OJ Mayo become available (which i doubt) that should be considered too, but no way we stand pat if Billups is out for the season. This team is a title contender, and we need to keep it that way.

by pass...

whay do you mean? what is ‘pass’?

by LJ Hann on Feb 6, 2012 10:24 PM PST up reply actions

Haha

JR likes to shoot, but i’ve seen him dish some nice assists to Nene for dunks, and Billups for 3s when he was in Denver. I think he’s matured as a player on the court since his early days, and i would hope playing with vets he respects could bring out the best in him.

by cassellmania on Feb 6, 2012 10:48 PM PST up reply actions

With Foye as a starter

…we don’t lose as much in the interim, when out comes to losing Billups on the court.

Its sad to say this, but Billups looked ticking time bomb on borrowed time. We were playing him far to many minutes on a condensed season with no off season in preparation for it.

Billups was killer at the free their line which happens to be Foyes strongest attribute. He can chuck like Chauncey behind the arch.
Uuui
Bottom line: if we were getting by so well with Chauncey, we will just the same with Foye estarting. Chauncey was actually are weakest link in very good starting lineup. Some of his greatness can still be utilized on the bench.

The power is coming from Chris Paul.

Billups should have been our backup pg. But pride would not let him. Her could have been preserved at about 18 mins a game. But he helped get us off to a great start.

not sold

Despite playing with CP3 or Chauncy for most of his career, those guys haven’t really kept him ‘in check’ to date. If you’ve seen signs that he’s matured as a person, I’d like to see the video. You’ve seen his sister’s act in China, right? You really want that for this organization?

by keown100 on Feb 7, 2012 12:50 AM PST up reply actions

You are blaming JR for his sister's actions? C'mon. . .

It’s not JR’s fault that his sister got into fights in the stands while he was playing in a game. He is a big time gamer on the court, and if he signed it would be for a one year deal.

Here’s a list of guys who could/should be available.

Landry Fields
JJ Reddick
OJ Mayo
Anthony Morrow

All of these would be good players.

I guess JR Smith is probably the best out of that bunch.

I don’t think the other trades would work with Clippers. I still think signing a backup big body for DJ is more of a priority. The back court is fine with CP3, Foye, Mo, and Bledsoe. Teams with big bodies (Lakers, Jazz, any team with D12) give us too much problem in the paint.

No, it's the Clip Show!

by ClipperChuck on Feb 7, 2012 1:15 PM PST up reply actions

I mean big bodies that just take up space

Evans and K-Mart are good defenders but they are way undersized against skilled centers in this league. I feel like in a 7-game playoff series, you need big bodies to neutralize other team’s big & skilled centers like Bynum, both Gasol brothers, D12, and even Milicic (yes, Darko gave us problems with Kevin Love).

No, it's the Clip Show!

by dan73962 on Feb 7, 2012 2:03 PM PST up reply actions

Well it depends

Evans and Martin can certainly play the 4 and can play the 5 against non-offensive minded centers. The only match up problems are Bynum and Howard. One is (at least for the moment) in the other conference and unlikely to make it to the Finals and the other is on the Lakers who the Clippers have been able to match up with in their meetings so far. Not to mention the Lakers would have to make it to the WCSF or WCF to meet the Clippers unless it was a first round matchup.

Help us Altered Beast you're our only hope.

by ClipperChuck on Feb 7, 2012 2:37 PM PST up reply actions

The Clippers pulled off the W without Billups, and that's good

Not taking anything away from Billups, but as important as he is for the Clippers and all it’s not like losing Paul or Blake or DJ, that’s the core of the team and those are the 3 players we need healthy all season long. Billups can be replaced by Mo just like that. There’s no immediate need to go and find someone via trade or whatever, no need. We can win with this team. If anything I’d like to see Caron get SG minutes with BG and K-Mart switching between SF and PF. That could be a matchup nightmare for any team.

If Mo replaces Chauncey, who replaces Mo?

Billups liked to shoot, but has hit quite a few big shots for us. He has also been money from the foul line. He’s a veteran voice that keeps everyone grounded. Mo still needs to be come off of the bench, or we’re not going to have a bench.

K-Mart and BG may be able to play the SF forward positions in certain match-ups (i.e. against Ron Artest), but you don’t really want to see either of them there under normal circumstances.

Bledsoe replaces Foye. Only way to do it unless there is another acquisition.

by LJ Hann on Feb 7, 2012 9:42 PM PST up reply actions

Someone said with the emergence of Marshon Brooks Anthony Morrow would be available. I think he’s a good get, although he’s not much of a defender. And he recently had the breakout 42 points, so I don’t know, whether the Nets changed their stance on him.
If we could get OJ Mayo, that would be beyond awesome, but there’s probably no way Memphis would trade him for Bledsoe, Foye and a trade exception.
We could try to get Raja Bell, but I don’t know whether I’m comfortable with giving Bledsoe for him.
Not certain how realistic it woud be to get Landry Fields, but he would be good too.

by germanclipper on Feb 7, 2012 12:30 AM PST reply actions

Morrow would be interesting... he's a good 3pt shooter.

I don’t know if NJ would want any of our bench players in return. They already have a roster full of bench players.
I say no to Raja Bell. He’s too old and very limited offensively.
I don’t think NY is shopping Landry Fields.
I don’t like OJ’s attitude personally but that doesn’t mean he can’t help the Clips. But I also think Memphis overvalues OJ and he won’t be traded for a bunch of backup players.

butler is our best 2 or 3

just thinking we need a better option than gomes as our 3 if we face a big lineup. We’ve been undersized at the 2 for a while so just thinking maybe caron could slide to the 2 and we could get bigger. He played the 2 in dallas so not that much of a stretch.

wine um, dine um, 69 um

by flightofthegriffin on Feb 8, 2012 11:38 AM PST up reply actions

Lets keep our pieces

We move Foye into starting SG, where he can do a good job (see last year with EJ out) and then we have Mo, Bledsoe as guards off the bench and Kenyon and Reggie as bigs off the bench.

We can use the other players (Gomes, Leslie, Cook, etc) when we are getting beaten badly or if we are winning easily and want to give our starters a rest.

Chemistry is important.

We’ve slowly been building this on the fly this season. It was going to have a change when Kenyon arrived as things moved around a bit. It’ll take another hit now if Chauncey is done. I don’t think we want to disrupt it anymore by adding JR Smith, hardly a character guy. Is Smith much better than Foye – I’m not so sure, maybe a bit but that is a risk I don’t want us to take.

Lets see what evolves from this situation. Teams have lost bigger pieces than this and come back stronger – looking at Atlanta with Horford down and Portland over the last few years. We won’t be playing a bigger rotation than 9 in the playoffs anyway.

We also have to keep an eye on the future. We shop Bledsoe quickly and then, if Chauncey is done and Mo decides not to come back, what are you left with to cover CP3? Where is the future?

Bingo! Oh me oh my!

by ClippersUK on Feb 7, 2012 2:19 AM PST reply actions

Forgot about Courtney Lee. I would like that. Chris Douglas Roberts would be nice too.
But I’m not sure, how available he is right now, since he’s with Virtus Bologna.

Or we do as ClippersUK says and don’t do anything. Things could get worse than Foye and that way we might finally get a better look at Leslie. From the small sample it’s kinda hard to see what he has in store. Look at Jeremy Lin, undrafted, little minutes, hard to find new contract, almost out of the league… and now, look what he did recently.
You never know.

The bench looks even paler with Foye in the starting line-up, but we’ll see.

by germanclipper on Feb 7, 2012 2:40 AM PST reply actions

For the time Smith is in China

I wouldn’t mind signing someone form the D-League on a non-guaranteed contract, to provide instant depth. Gomes in undeachieving this year, so why not take a look at a guy like Andre Emmett? He can play both the 2 and the 3, he’s a solid scorer, who showed a lot of improvement in his all-around game this season.

by kingofrnb on Feb 7, 2012 3:27 AM PST reply actions

His only problem

is that he has very little NBA experience at 29, he didn’t have the opportunity to show that he is capable of playing this way on the next level yet. But, imo he could be a perfect fit for us.

We really need to do something.

Cosnidering we have a gaping hole now behind Foye, sitting and seeing how it plays out is a bad option. Vinny should be on the phone looking at who we can pry away from teams. Whether it is Morrrow or Shannon Brown. 10 day contracts and what we have on the roster are strictly a temporary option.

Different opinions.

Nothing wrong with that. I see Foye as a ball stopper who doesn’t pass the ball enough usually resulting in a very very bad looking shot. He tries to fake his opponents out, and it doesn’t happen, so he pulls up and tries a Kobe. Not to mention he hasn’t been consistant shooting the ball, imo.

"Things change when something is taken away from you" -BG32

by JackduhSun on Feb 7, 2012 12:51 PM PST up reply actions

Sure, I can see why Randy Foye would split opinions

He can be a ball stopper a little bit and can take some quite low percentage shots but I think his role will be much different as a starter than when he comes off the bench.

Off the bench he’s expected to force things, to keep the scoreboard ticking over, making his own shot (not really a strength of his I’d say).

However, as a starter, he’s going to be probably the last option the other team are looking at so he should get some more open looks. The opposition will be looking at CP3, watching Blake and DJ to try and cover any alley-oops and also keeping an eye on Caron on the perimeter. I just feel Randy will step up and do a good job. He did last year – played better as cover for EJ I thought then when he came off the bench.

Like you said, different opinions.

Bingo! Oh me oh my!

by ClippersUK on Feb 7, 2012 1:18 PM PST up reply actions

Except Foye...

has played as a starter for his career elsewhere and put up similar stats whether starting or off the bench.

http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/f/foyera01.html

He’s probably going to score about 13 points, 4 assists, 2.5 rebounds on 40% shooting as a starter because that’s what Randy Foye does.

When Foye was a starter, it was always on terrible teams. Chris Paul has shared the backcourt with Mo Pete, Rasual Butler, and Marco Bellinelli and still managed to win.

That said, we need JR Smith. His crazy scares me tho.

I don't personally like the team chemistry change

if we bring Smith in also. We have very little practice time from now on and we are adding two potentially violitile players to the roster without our most experienced leader. That is a risk too far, in my opinion.

I would say this year, apart from the Thunder, it’s looking like there are no standout teams in the West. I think we can go to the WCF with our current roster.

Bingo! Oh me oh my!

by ClippersUK on Feb 7, 2012 1:47 PM PST up reply actions

We need another SG/SF for playoffs.

All our guards are undersized (ok, Foye is 6-4), Who knows what we are gonna get with Bledsoe this year as he is still a project, and we still have the offensively challenged Gomes backing up Caron. No way Olshey goes into the postseason with this group of guards minus Chauncey.

Sam Amico tweeted today that Clips will make a move fast if Chauncey is out for the year, and unless Olshey thinks JR is coming here for the vet min, I expect Bled/picks/etc to be moved.

by cassellmania on Feb 7, 2012 2:11 PM PST up reply actions

Don't get me wrong, I can see why they might make a change

I just do not want Smith on our roster. I’d rather we moved Bledsoe and a pick for another available SG. Trouble is, you are moving Bledsoe when his value is low and because it appears we are desparate to get a SG, I’m not sure we’d get great value back.

I’d rather we tried to go after Budinger from the Rockets. They are in a perpetual state of building and their GM likes to stockpile young talent and picks for a big future trade.

Having Budinger would allow us to play a mix of Butler/Budinger/Foye at the wings.

Bingo! Oh me oh my!

by ClippersUK on Feb 7, 2012 2:27 PM PST up reply actions

Gotcha

Budinger would be nice, as would Courtney Lee.

JR Smith has his off court issues, but i feel like he could be a huge x-factor for this team in the playoffs as a guy that can explode for 40 pts. As a one year rental, there’s no risk in long term chemistry issues, and vets like CP, Butler, Kenyon, Billups (if he’s still with team) will keep him in line.

by cassellmania on Feb 7, 2012 2:33 PM PST up reply actions

I think Foye is ok when you don't ask him to do too much

that’s why it makes sense to start Foye and bring Mo off of bench.
If all Foye was asked to do was to defend and shoot open shots that CP3 feeds him, then he will be ok.

I would love this as much as the next guy, but i just recently read an interview with him, where he basically said he had some complications and at this point in time he can’t even think about playing basketball, because just walking is an issue.

Hate to read that, because he seems like a really nice guy and a tremendous basketball player.

In other “players with serious health issues, who might be able to still play well” news: recently read an article about Dajuan Wagner attempting another comeback.
Thats another madly talented dude who had a seriously tough pro career.
I know, this is ridiculously far fetched and he’s 29, but a scout said, talentwise he still has it, he still shoots well and his body hasn’t taken the beatings an Nba player does.

by germanclipper on Feb 7, 2012 7:04 AM PST up reply actions

Wagner

he was more of an off guard than a true shooting guard, and I think we need a bigger guy, who can play the 3 as well. But its always good to see players with tough careers attempt a comeback.

by kingofrnb on Feb 7, 2012 7:37 AM PST up reply actions

an off guard is a shooting guard

like the point guard, who is ‘on’ the ball…

by LJ Hann on Feb 7, 2012 9:46 PM PST up reply actions

True, Chris Paul is small enough, which is also why Mo or Bledsoe might be a bad idea next to him, in addition to both being point guards. Wagner is too small as well.

Another factor in our chances at JR Smith

JR and his agent will be looking for the best opportunity to showcase JR for his next big contract. If he comes back in March and the Knicks are out of the playoff hunt and we are still a top seed in the west, he very well might decide to take less money for the chance to shine in a deep playoff run.
