Should we go after Eremy Lin?

He is only on a 1 wk contract and maybe we can snatch him from the Knicks

He is playing pretty well and would be a good filler for Billups or as back up PG.

He is pretty good slasher and can be a good passer

He made Steve Novak look like Larry Bird yesterday. Novak went off for 19 points in 15 mins.

Imagine what he could do for Brian Cookie Crumbs my fellow Cliplets

I'm pretty sure there's no way in heck that he'd come here

He’s a starter. He’s getting major publicity cause of the NY media. He’ll definitely get a decent contract if he stays there and plays like this. What would the Clippers offer him? A short term spot on the bench?

by UC.Clipper on Feb 7, 2012 9:16 PM PST up reply actions

exactly

we should have drafted him over willie warren, and i know i wasn’t the only one clamoring for him. but it’s too late now. no pg in the world would rather come off the bench behind cp3 in a clips jersey than start for the knicks at msg.

They are starting him... I'm pretty sure he's going to get more than a 10 day contract.

NYK does some weird stuff.

although I’m thoroughly enjoying this season I kind of miss the fact that this used to be our little home, a secret club if you will for the downtrodden. Now with the influx on new members and bandwagon fans we’re starting to get the same stupid oh what if we get him for a bag of chips hypotheticals that make me cringe…one of the top reasons we hate faker fans! I doubt he will continue his current level of play

I was talking about him with my coworker today. We both agree that he caught people off guard because he was asian and he couldn’t possibly be that good (not trying to be racist here). I think his ceiling is more like Luke Ridnour than the hype has led us to believe in the last two days.

No, it's the Clip Show!

He's Asian-American

By stating “(not trying to be racist here)” you end up sounding like one. Considering Yao’s sucess in the league as well as the Clips own Wang Zhi Zhi, an odd statement for you to make. He’s Asian American, he went to HS in Palo Alto, so he’s played against CA’s best his whole life. You might be right, he could be Luke Ridnour. Luke has lasted in the NBA since 2003, so even if that’s the case, that would be pretty impressive for Jeremy Lin to last that long. End of Bench PGs like Mike Taylor and Willie Warren are flashes in the pan that come and go. Ridnour is a big step above those guys.

Lin lucked out to find himself in NYK, a team lacking in PG depth. This is a team desperately waiting for Baron to save them…so you know they have zero PG depth. It’s also a D’Antoni team, where passing and shooting the long ball are very important to the team. Luckily, Lin excels in all these. We’ll see after 10 games how Lin is.

Several years ago, another “no-name” Flip Murray took the league by storm with the Sonics and went crazy scoring wise for around 10 games at the start of the the season. It was similar to Lin-Mania. Murray lasted several yrs….but was no All-Star.

by oasisman on Feb 8, 2012 12:49 AM PST up reply actions

you misunderstood me on the racist issue but I agree with your other points

Here’s an everyday analogy for the point I was trying to make:
An Asian guy shows up to play pick-up basketball at a local gym w/ good competition.

Asian Guy: Hey, who has next?
Big Guy (let’s just say he’s a 6’4" black guy for argument’s sake): Yo, I got next.
Asian Guy: You have 5?
Big Guy: Ummm, yeah. I am picking up the losers (more black guys for argument’s sake).
Asian Guy: Ok, that’s cool. I got last then.

The Asian guy finally plays with his 5 against the Big Guy’s 5.

Big Guy (to his teammates): Yo, let the Asian guy shoot because he’s probably not as good as the other (more big black) guys on the court.

Then, the Asian guy promptly schools the Big Guy and his team and wins a few pick-up games. Now, think about it. You don’t think the Big Guy will toughen up his defense on the Asian Guy in the next game?

Obviously, this particular situation is less common in California pick-up games and even in high school competition because there are plenty of Asians in California. I have to imagine that this situation is far worse in the collegiate level and in the NBA where Asian players are clearly the minority. You can also insert White Guy for Asian Guy in this analogy and I think the analogy works to some degree. (Remember movie “White Men Can’t Jump”?)

Look, I like and root for Jeremy Lin. I hope he makes it in the NBA. But he has had 2 good games seemingly out of nowhere. I can’t help but to think that the fact that he is Asian may have helped him surprise his opposition. I was just trying to be realistic when I said his ceiling is more like Luke Ridnour (I still believe that is the case), which is still really good because I would want Luke Ridnour on this Clippers team. Again, being realistic here, I doubt that he will sustain the level of play he has had in his last 2 games – you are talking about CP3/DWill territory in terms of stats.

By the way, I really was not trying to be racist in the previous post. It wouldn’t make sense anyways because:
1) I am Asian American myself.
2) As I stated in other posts, I used to play IM basketball with Jeremy Lin’s brother when I was in college.
3) My longtime college roommate is friends with the Lin brothers – they went to the same high school in Palo Alto. That’s how I met Jeremey’s older brother, who was also a star high school basketball player by the way.

Yo, my buddy played with Lin's bro too.

And my old coach Dave actually coached him back in the Nor Cal Asian leagues, for which he is now one of the officials of, and was quoted a few times by ESPN back when Lin first joined the league. (Go to Dave’s Dougout on Solano in Albany!)

I think he's making too much of nothing.

Lin is playing for Knicks after being undrafted and having shown no real signs of being an NBA quality player. Wouldn’t you be surprised if Brian Cook started putting up 20 and 10 out of no where? Does being Asian have something to do with expectations? Maybe, but only because Asians are a tiny minority of the league (and as stated before, Lin was undrafted and unproven) and I would argue that white NBA players are treated similarly. Look at star college players like Jimmer Fredette, Adam Morrison and JJ Reddick who are dwarfed in the NBA by athleticism and strength.

by andrewexd on Feb 9, 2012 1:50 PM PST up reply actions

i have to say that article is complete horseshit.

i went to jeremy lin’s first game minutes last year. the guy sucked. there were low expectations for him because uh… he might have been one of the worst guards in the nba while with goldenstate.

He’s turned it around now, but I really don’t agree with that article. This time last year warrior fans were talking about how the guaranteed contract he got to sell tickets, was hurting the warriors because the warriors didnt have anyone to cut becuase they had lin and charlie bell on guaranteed deals and both of them were god awful when curry went down with this ankle issues.

Lin was so bad, that they turned to reggie williams playing point guard. I watched a TON of warrior games and lin looked completely overmatched in the nba last year. his first minutes were actually against our very own eric bledsoe. probably 3rd game of the year and at that point you were thinking “how the hell is that guy even in the league” compared to bledsoe. he could barely get the ball past half court while the entire asian population of oracle arena cheered him just because he was asian and the warriors management signed him just to sell tickets ( it was asian american heritage night too, and people KNEW he wouldnt get down to the d-league untli after that because that was half of why they signed him)

Now I don’t know what it is now, and its nice to see he’s having some success and at least prooving he belongs in the nba. but call a spade a spade. people had low expectations of him because uh in his last nba stint he sucked a fat one. its not like he’d never played in the league before.

And I have a different point about these asian leagues so let me put this out there. I’m a chinese american. In the bay area they have a league called “dream league” which is mostly asian (i think its the one Erik O is talking about).

I’ve never played in it, because I don’t like the idea of these racial leagues. While I lived up there though I played at the oakland magic johnson 24. there are a lot of black people in oakland. I was a semi regular in oakland and this was an extremely tough place to play pickup sometimes physically, but whatever. So sometimes you’d get groups of these asian league guys come in and get their asses kicked or they thought they were hot shit and just started chucking and missing against much better athletes. Now the reason black guys in oakland don’t pick your ass is because you never play on their teams and they dont know you. you make up leagues for your own race and then the few times you come out you get your ass handed to you since you think you are kobe. Its the same in socal with all the japanese american leagues. if you win you stay thats all. if you dont even try to play there and play in your own league well you are a stranger. you wont get picked no one knows you.

by hans007 on Feb 9, 2012 2:11 PM PST up reply actions   1 recs

definately agree about the Asian leagues

never liked the concept of a racially exclusive league. it’s like the early 1900s all over again. forming your own league is like admitting you’re not good enough to play with everyone else… which is not a message Asian ballers should be putting out.

my friend who’s a warriors fan echoed the sentiment of lin sucking it up last season. he’s thoroughly convinced that lin’s last three games were a fluke.

by jon y on Feb 10, 2012 12:22 AM PST up reply actions

Seems you're railing more against Lin's legitimacy, and in the process throwing the article out with the bath water.

There’s a lot of truth in that article, notwithstanding the author’s optimism about Lin.

Based on your first-hand observations of Lin’s play, it seems he was an under-achiever with the Warriors (i.e. his first stop in the NBA). I figure if Bo Kimble, who was a true hometown hero of sorts as well (based on attending Loyola Marymount, though he didn’t grow up in L.A.), and what’s more demonstrated his potential as a player and a leader as a pro during the NCAA tourney, couldn’t benefit from home cooking in his first stop in the pros — why would we expect Lin to resemble even a glimmer of Kimble, given the level of competition to which Lin was exposed in college?

I doubt Lin will last 10 years in the NBA, and finish his pro career averaging anywhere near 20 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists per game; but for now he’s earned a shot at being a starting point guard — and it ain’t in an Asian league.

The article is BS

China wins tons of Gold Medals every Olympics…the whole “Asian guys are unathletic” stereotypes don’t hold water. You can perhaps apply that to Asian Americans, but Michelle Kwan broke that long ago. Since this is Bball, American Whites, Euros, Asians will always face a few stereotypes in the US. That’s the just way it goes. It comes with the territory.

Yao Ming and Wang Zhi Zhi already showed Asians can be viable in the NBA. Lin’s a guard and Asian-American, so that’s the next step.

If there are Low Expectations, you have to take advantage of them. Asian-Americans have HIGHER expectations than everyone else. The author is nonsense.

I'd say the perceptions are changing now re: mainstream American sports, but the perceptions are still prevalent.

As you said, Lin being a potentially viable NBA guard is the next step (in that evolution).

option 2- pass to Blake for the power move

option 3- pass to Novak for the wide open 3

option 4- take it himself

option 5- pass to Caron
