Ive been a dedicated Clipper fan for 12 years now which is half my life, and have been a reader of Clips Nation for 3 years now but this is my first post let me know what you guys think.
Lets all be honest with ourselves for a moment. As constructed right now here are the grades for the Clippers at every position:
PF = A
SF = B-
SG = D
PG = A+
Now we all know that this does not look like a championship contender so here is what I would like to happen with the Clippers this offseason. First thing is first, we need to get a backup big. That in itself would make us extrememly good. What would we need from that backup big? 70%+ Free throw shooting if they cant shoot better than that they should not even be considered. Solid interior defense, not great just solid, solid rebounding, and the ability to play in the high post and knock down the 15-18 footer. Guess what to me this sounds an awful lot like Chris Kaman. Thats right Chris Kaman would be the perfect fit for our current Clipper team and he might be available this offseason, at the full mid-level for Kaman I would not be disappointed in my Clips. We'd have Kaman, Griffin and Jordan sharing minutes up front, thats pretty damn solid and Kaman would not be a liability late in games. Many of the citizens of Clips Nation critisize Kaman for his ability to close out games guess what with this team all he would have to do his help create room for Griffin down low and set screens for Paul. Just think about it Kaman sets a screen on the high post for Paul while Blake is setting up down low defense has to account for the possibility of a Kaman 15 footer a Paul drive, a Griffin dunk a Kaman cut, or a Paul shot. Thats without even taking into account two other players. What would it take to get Kaman back, probably the full mid-level but that would be worth it to see one of the better offensive trios in the NBA. That single move would make us look as follows:
PF = A
SF = B-
SG = D
Clearly our wing position is the one that would need the most help. And the one area where we are very weak is defense. So who out there could possibly help us a this? In my opinion this would be Gerald Wallace, if we amnesty Gomes and trade Williams for a future first rounder think we would have enough cap space to sign him and re-sign Billups, Wallace would be an insane pairing with Bledsoe in our backcourt and would be instant energy of our bench, while being able to fluster other wings with his aggresive defensive style. He can play both the 2, the 3 and since our coach likes playing small ball possibly the 4.
Again remember I am not like those typical Laker fans who say well we should just trade Artest for D. Williams and well be fine. These are realistic scenarios that could possibly set us up for present and future sucess.
Our centers would be Jordan and Kaman with a 3 big just in case, some stiff like Solomon Jones or anybody available for ultra cheap including Evans.
PF: Griffin with some Kaman, maybe Evans and if hes available I think Craig Smith would be a welcome addition.
SF: Butler with Wallace basically playing the same amount of minutes since Butler is moste effective in limited minutes.
SG Billups, again many people say he is to small but there arent many 2 guards who will burn him other than No. 24 who we could put Wallace on him. If foye is available for cheap we could sign him in a back up role we could also pick up a stiff for a 3rd stringer here such as Vince Carter if he is willing to take the minimum which would be great for us.
PG: Paul and Bledsoe: Again in ideal world if we get injuies we could move Billups here as well, but that would be my dream team.
Kaman, Jordan, Griffin, Evans, Smith, Butler, Wallace, Billups, Foye, Carter, Paul, Bledsoe id keep Thompkins as well but I dont see him getting any real minutes I think Young is gone since we dont have capspace for him. But we would also hopefully have acquired a good first round pick in that exchange for Williams, and therefore contend this year and next year possibly have a top 10 pick, which would probably be used on a shooting guard. The following year itd be time to upgrade the 3 with Butlers contract coming of the books. Let me know what you think. By the way Im not fully against the idea of Odom, but would rather not although hed be a nice backup 3,4. As far as Ray Allen hed be great but repetitive with Billups and ill take Billups over Allen becuase hed be cheaper, and he really grew to love it here.
