LOS ANGELES, CA - MAY 05: Injured guard Chauncey Billups #1 of the Los Angeles Clippers helps out with some coaching from the bench during the game with the Memphis Grizzlies in Game Three of the Western Conference Quarterfinals in the 2012 NBA Playoffs on May 5, 2011 at Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. The Clippers won 87-86 to take a two games to one lead in the series. Yesterday the LA Clippers announced the re-signing of guard Chauncey Billups. They've agreed to a one year deal reportedly worth 4.2 million including performance incentives. Here's the link from the Clippers.
To my mind this is an essential move and one with little danger. If Billups comes back from his Achilles' tear slowly and doesn't actually see court time until 2013, he should still have time to mesh with the team before the playoffs. If he doesn't really come back at all, a distinct possibility at his age, he's still a glowering, tough presence on the bench. With Vinny Del Negro coaching the team the Clippers can use as much gravitas as they can muster.
Since his contract is incentive-based, the Clips have little exposed risk.
