Hey everybody. Been here for a while, first post. Bla bla bla. I respect this community and I don't plan on making much noise. Just wanted to get your thoughts on this, if possible.
I was reading this article earlier today, which is about the Nets struggles and the fact that they can't do anything about it because of all of the contract trouble they're in. I'm just copying this mid-paragraph, but, to me, this is where it got interesting (possibly) from a Clippers perspective.
"Moving Garnett-who has a no-trade clause-in exchange for an expiring pact could be a possibility. But he would have to approve any deal, which he's unlikely to do if Pierce isn't coming with him.
Say the Nets do this; say they find a taker with expiring deals that match up to Pierce's concluding contract and Garnett..."
This is assuming the Clippers would have anywhere near the same interest in those players as they did before the season began... But the article points out several times that the Nets would benefit from expiring contracts to get some financial reprieve. The article also is not in favor of the Nets trying to contend this year. So these thoughts of mine take that into consideration.
I know the Clippers are barred from making any trade with the Celtics for the remainder of the season, but what about with the Nets who have those players the Clippers were interested in before? And at the beginning of the year it would have been a crazy idea to consider either of those players going for less than something big, but (just from what I've read lately) the Nets might swing their view towards the long-term if their season continues as it's currently headed, which might draw their interest towards less useful, but much less expensive, players for the short-term.
Not sure the Clippers would have any need for Pierce, but certainly Garnett would make a difference. The article says that he wouldn't consider waiving his no-trade clause without Pierce. But would he if he was going to Doc's team? IF it's true that the Nets are looking for cheap, expiring contracts, what's the possibility of Hollins and Jamison for Garnett? What else would have to be included for there to be real interest?
This is, of course, a long shot and probably totally unrealistic. I'm sure there are factors I haven't at all considered. But I felt like coming out of the shadows for a few minutes to share that with you. Take it as you will.
