BC raids the NBA stats vault: about ORebs and second hand points

Note 1: All statistics are from the wonderfull NBA.com website

Note 2: All the statistics I use are per 100 possessions.

Note 3: The stats from NBA.com are rounded to one decimal place, which annoys me to no end.

This fanpost is inspired by Raffo wondering about the Clips rebounding woes in one of the threads, although I won't answer his question . Whilst perusing the rebounding stats form the official NBA site I noticed something weird. Despite giving up the 4th most offensive rebounds per 100 possessions and only being the 23th ranked in crashing the offensive glass the Clippers only give up 0.5 more second hand points than they score themselves.

In the end second hand points are the relevant stat. An offensive rebound gives you an extra possession. If you proceed by throwing it out of bounds all is for naught. If you hit that deadeye shooter standing in the corner which buries it for a 3 pointer whilst getting fouled you maximize that extra chance.

I copied some stats to a spreadsheet and went to work. The essence of this is found in following table

Per 100 possessions on average a team gives up/ secures 11.3 offensive caroms which lead to 13.6 points . If you calculate the OffRtg of this you get 120 which means that a) that on average for every Oreb a NBA team scores 1.20 points b) which is much higher than the standard OffRtg.

This probably isn't that surprising: in some instances the offensive rebounder will throw down a vicious putback, in other instances the defense will have become unsettled with some players already leaking out or stranded somewhere . Enough to offset Kevin Love batting the ball several times around the rim on the final possession in one of those LAC-MIN thrillers earlier this season.

On to our Clips: Although they secure 0.7 Oreb less than average they score an exactly average amount of 13.6 second hand points. They give up 1.2 Oreb more than average for 0.5 more second hand points. This translates in an 128.3 OffRtg of second hand points and a Deffrtg of 112.8. Both ratings are vastly superior to the league's average of 120.

So there you have it: we might not have the quantity when it comes to offensive rebounds but we sure have the quality which helps to keep the damage done by our poor rebounding under control.
